I am still young, 25, but need some stories of encouragment. I have a 2 yo son and am due with my 2nd little one in December. I am registered for fall classes at my local college and will continue to take my pre-req's until I am done. I always kick myself in the butt though for not getting right in after high school graduation and taking my classes seriously; I was definately a slacker and can't afford to be that anymore. I have always wanted to be a nurse and can't imagine myself anywhere else.
So I am curious to know the stories, as I am sure they will be encouraging, at what age did you decide to start taking classes to become an RN? Did you have children? etc.
Thank you.
I've read most of post and its nice that everyone response to their age. Well I went back to school at 41 and I've decided to go into the nursing program where I live. I have always wanted to do nursing especially when I was in my 20's but I never thought I was smart enough. But now since I've been taking online classes it has really help my confidence as well leaving it to the lord to get me through. Now the only thing left is for me to take the TEAS V exam which I'll be doing that in December, so wish me luck. To everyone else I thought it was too late also but now I see it's never to late for your dreams. Good luck to all!!!!
I'm 25 as well and recently graduated with a degree I can do much with right now. I always wanted to be a nurse but felt like I wasn't good enough. Now, I am going back in school this fall. I was a slacker too but this time around things will be better. I believe it is the same for you...:redbeathe
You can do it! I never thought I had time to do it, until I was laid off from my job. I know that this is God's plan for me. I had been slowly taking one class then taking the next semester off, etc for 2.5 years. I was laid off 1 week before classes; I luckily got into Chem and Speech that semester, Micro & Soc the next and took A&P in the summer in 2 6-week crash courses (don't know how I survived that)! I applied and took the TEAS test that fall. They called me to return to my job the fall of 2009 (with a raise and apology) and I was at work when I got the message that I had made it into the nursing program! Woo-hoo! CONGRATULATIONS!!!!
28 I've been tossing around the idea of being a nurse since 24ish. Even before that I've always had an interest in the medical profession. I was just a little nervous that I couldnt suck up all the gross stuff. I ended up doing an EMT program and realizing I'd be fine. It may be gross at first but you'll get immune to it. My first degree was in business and I hated every job I've ever had since I graduated. Basically, they pay you crap and you get to make tons of money for some rich guy. I didnt feel like I was making much of a difference in peoples lifes. Well I was an insurance underwriter for a life settlement company so I was making a difference (ripping off old people and helping rich people get richer) thats not the difference I wanted to make. So I decided to go back for nursing. I made sure I got straight A's in all my prereqs and now I am starting nursing school next monday
I decided on nursing four years ago a few moths before I was 21. I am graduating with my BA in History in May 2011. I am applying to Accelerated BSN programs and hope to start in Fall 2011. I hope to be a neonatal NP one day.
I do not have any children and that has been a big factor with me applying to ABSN programs. I will be able immerse myself fully without worrying about any others.
However, if you are serious about becoming an RN then do it. You will not be the first to attempt nursing school as a mother...nor will you be the last.
It will take extra planning and scheduling but in the end it will be worth it. Pursue your dream...and succeed.
I wish you Godspeed.
I was 25 when I made a firm commitment to follow through with nursing. I had thrown around the idea when I was 21 or 22, but wasn't completely serious about it. I graduated with a degree in Liberal Arts specializing in Communication and worked doing PR/Editing but was unhappy with it. I really disliked the corporate world and felt it didn't suit my personality or my goal to do something that made a difference. After much thought, I decided to take a dive and start prereq classes. I'm applying for Spring 2011 admission and I hope I get in!

I am just finishing a 12 week A&P II class crammed into 6 weeks... That's hard, but next summer I will have the same thing for Microbiology. At least we can take that after nursing courses start! Let's keep in touch and see how it's going thru the year....
