ASU Post Bacc - 2021

U.S.A. Arizona

Published

Hi Everyone!

I've created this chain for anyone applying to the ASU Post Bacc BSN program for the 2021 cycle.

A little about me: I've completed all the prereqs and just took the TEAS last month (scoring a 93.3% so if you have any questions/are about to take the TEAS soon please let me know!) I'm 28, originally from CA but now living in AZ, and even though nursing will be a 2nd career it's been a dream job of mine since I was 18. Looking forward to meeting you all!

I am an older student and was out of school for several years before applying for this program. To study for the TEAS I just paid for the practice TEAS exams and anything I didn't understand or remember - I watched videos for on Youtube. There are tons of TEAS Youtube videos! The practice exams are what really helped me. I threw away the books (gave to Goodwill) - they didn't help me personally. You can also check Goodwill for nursing books and TEAS books and get them for like $2-5. So I ended up getting a 91% on my TEAS thanks to those practice exams

Cost for program $35,000 plus books and supplies which add up. Expect at least another $2000. You will have to buy a supply bag for lab and book packages through ASU because you need the online portion that goes with it - you will have assignements from those that you'll need to complete so don't plan on saving money by buying paper books unless you just want them in addition to the online books. You will also have to purchase access to programs such as ATI which can run a couple hundred dollars each semester. These are requirements for the classes. You will come close to $38-40,000 by the time you're done depending on other things you'll need to pay for like parking passes and fancy ID badge holders! haha

As far as schedule goes, don't count on having one. Our schedule has changed many times this year, and each semester we did not know our schedule for sure until the first day of class. Until the semester actually starts, you probably will not know, it can and does change at any time. Until the first week of class is down, don't count on a schedule. We did not know our schedules until the first day of class or even a couple days after (for labs/clinicals). We had one class so far that was an evening class (5-830pm on T/Th). Most classes are between 7-5. So you will have your regular lectures plus lab, plus simulations, plus clinicals. Those can be any day of the week depending on what group you are placed in (which is random every semester). Hopefully you will get to do your clinicals in a hospital next year. Right now we are doing our clinical "replacement activities" online. So I had Classes Tuesday and Thursday this Summer and lab/simulations or clinicals on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. You may be in these for only a few hours or the whole day (7-5). Again, you won't know until the semester actually starts.

Working - unless your working at night or your schedule is REALLY flexible - I wouldn't recommend it unless you really have to, especially if you have children. It is a very stressful program- I don't say that to discourage anyone but so you don't have any surprises - you can do it but make sure you have the time and time for yourself during this program. Time management is crucial. Grading is strict, it is not your typical grading system. To get an A you need a 93%, B is 85%, C is a 77% and you must have a minimum 77% to pass on all exams and final grade. Unless you are super-human (which we do have some of those in our cohort!) be very cautious about working while in school. It really depends on how much free time you have, responsibilities nd how much support you have. You could always try working and see how it goes and then quit if it doesn't work out.

Do you have any suggestions in studying for the TEAS and which section to focus more? Im taking it but only have 4 weeks to review because my study guide just got here. It took too long so now im really worried I won't have enough time

Well I utilized the secret of the TEAS book by Mometrix, while additionally using the pocket Prep and TEAS mastery programs on my phone. I also bought the two tests from ATI to get familiar with the format. I also watched the Youtube channel by Carolyn McAllister which I have linked below. The test was odd being honest because some questions were insanely easy, and I maybe spent too much time overthinking them but on the science it asked some pretty in-depth questions. So, my best piece of advice is to just get familiarized with the questions and the format. What works for someone else may not work for you. My advice would also to be is get those tests and take one at the beginning, so you have an idea of what to work on and then work from there. Then week of the test maybe five days out take the second exam.

Thank you so much! I started watching her videos and she's so helpful!

I'm really worried about it since I'm trying to balance a full-time job, Summer class, and also preparing for the TEAS and other requirements. I really hope I get everything done

Btw, to everybody, there is a zoom meeting available for the Advancement Workshop https://nursingandhealth.asu.edu/student-life/current-students/clinical-nursing-advancement-application

Did y'all apply yet? I sent in my application and was able to petition a class for a grade replacement bringing my advancement score to a 1.82.

Yup! Applied on the first. Now, we wait! Are you going to see if you get in first before starting all the titers, fingerprinting, etc? They don’t give us a whole lot of time to do it once acceptance is given.

Do everything now. Do not wait. That fingerprinting card takes forever and our cycle had to have it included with the application, along with titers, and everything else. Get it done because you are going to need them for any school you apply to. Acceptances go out between last week of October & mid-November. We were accepted on Oct 21st & this was included in the email:

Your advancement is contingent upon the completion of all remaining health and safety requirements, screening items (drug test, background check, health clearance), completing your final courses with a “C” or better, and maintaining the required GPA.

You will also need to complete the following items:

Due Friday, October 25th: Intent to Enroll

Due Wednesday November 13th: Health and Safety Requirements are a critical requirement of participating in clinicals. Late submission of the health and safety requirements after the established deadline may result in the forfeiture of your seat in the Nursing program. Instructions regarding submission of Health and Safety Requirements, and additional screening items, will be sent out on October 28, 2019 via email.

Friday, November 15, 2019: Attend mandatory Prelicensure Welcome Meeting. The welcome is a student-focused event that will provide an overview of the program, clinical dress code, uniform and equipment requirements, and necessary textbooks. Space is limited for this event and priority seating will be given to students advancing in Spring 2020. Because this event is mandatory, no RSVP is required.

Hi everyone, I also just submitted my application to the accelerated program (as well as the traditional just in case). I didn't do as well as I had hoped on the TEAS but my select GPA was pretty high so I am just hoping for the best. I have other schools/options but ASU is my number one choice, especially since my original degree is from ASU already. Hopefully it's like the one year, where everyone that applied was offered a spot.

I wouldn't worry, I'm sure you'll get in! I would start studying now for your classes! :0)

Thank you, I am already stressed about the decisions, and they won't even be here for another month to month and a half ?. But I'm currently in my last prerequisite which is HCR 240 and I am treating it as if I am already in the nursing program, in order to get myself into that groove. I took Microbiology over the Summer and got an A so I am hoping to continue that streak haha.

Every time I think about getting in, I practically burst into tears because I want it so bad, even though I don't have the highest TEAS score or a 4.0, I am praying and I'm not even religious ?

That class is really easy, you'll do great! I started to do the fingerprinting, titers, BLS, etc now so that I have something to keep me busy during the stressful period of waiting for the results of the application process.

If you want to start learning early just buy Mosby's 2020 Drug Reference Guide and start learning about some of the most common prescribed medications or reading a fundamentals in nursing or MedSurg book. Or better yet, look up nursing on Youtube and there are several series to get you started. Might as well start now if you're bored, it will definitely help.

I've started that process as well. The titers and vaccinations will be pretty easy for me as I have almost all of the vaccines. I just have to get Hep B and the titers done. And of course the annual flu shot.

And I just have to wait for my fingerprint card to be sent to me. Then I'll be done with that and it's a waiting game. Just focusing on my class for now ?
