ASU Fall 2010 Hopefuls

U.S.A. Arizona

Published

Ok gang, now it's our turn to start sharing information, tips and score ranges for those applying to the ASU (Arizona State) upper division nursing program for the Fall 2010 semester.

With the new TEAS testing requirement, I'm not sure we can apply to our situation the historical score ranges from the past (when they had to take the NET) so let's all share information and support for those of us applying for advancement.

I took the TEAS today got an 85.3% composite score. Both the program and national percentile scores were 98%. I'm applying with a 4.0 GPA. If this was a NET score submission for the Spring 2010 semester, I'd be right on the bubble. I'm wondering how others are scoring on the TEAS and if anyone's heard of any nuances in the application of those scores to our overall advancement scores. I'm under the impression that the Program Percentile score is pretty important as it is the ranking within our program exclusively - does anyone know if that is correct or not?

I recall that there will be only 60 advanced into the upper division program this Fall so I know the competition is going to be stiff.

If anyone has any information regarding scoring, numbers applying, numbers to be advanced, etc, please share! It's a long way off until they let us know where we stand - It will be nice to have a forum where we can bounce off one another.

I just talked to my advisor today. She said there were 175 applicants this semester and that they would be mailing out the acceptance letters the week of the 14th! ! ;)

Are you sure there are 175 applicants? The acceptance letters will be mailed on 6/14 or 7/14? BTW I would like to share my application status. I have a 4.0 GPA and 90% (actual score not national or program score) on the TEAS V. I know so far 30 people have 87% and 4.0 GPA. I don't mean to scare people but this is what I know so far.

What was your preference Mayo/Downtown?

Me - 4.0 GPA/88 TEAS - Mayo 1st/Downtown 2nd Choice.

The advisor told me 175 applications... so I'm just quoting her. And the applications will be mailed the week of June 14th, so next week! :) There are so much less applicants than previous semesters that they are able to do it sooner.

Mayo is my top choice. Mayo is the place for top people. This is what my advisor told me. Good luck to us!!!

wow that is good for us! we have more chances of getting in:yeah: I can't imagine competing with 300 applicants.

I like Mayo because the program is accelerated and I certainly like the cachet that goes along with the Mayo name, but I will be thrilled just to get in downtown or Mayo. For some, the accelerated program simply won't work and I understand that the summer semesters bring additional fees as well, so it's not for everyone. I think with as competitive as our program is, just getting in means your one of the top people!

Good luck!

I agree with you completely aznursetobe! Everyone who gets in are definately ALL the top people. I can't do the Mayo because I have my son during the summer while school is out this year.

I'm sorry...this might be a stupid question but what is the difference between being accepted at the mayo clinic vs. downtown? is one significantly harder than the other? Does one have better instructors or a higher nclex passing score? If someone can let me know that would be great.

Well the mayo clinic is year round, so no summer breaks, and the tuition is signigicantly higher during the summer. You still would take the same classes as everyone except the clinical rotations will mostly be at the Mayo campus. I don't know any more than that. You should call the advisement office for more information. Here is the webpage from the ASU website: http://nursingandhealth.asu.edu/programs/nursing/undergraduate/bsn/options/mayo.htm

I think the best reason to do the Mayo option is that you might have a better chance at getting a job there after you graduate. But don't quote me on that :) I know Mayo pays their nurses pretty well.

"I know so far 30 people have 87% and 4.0 GPA"

Did you hear that from the advisors?

Wow, holy smokes. Back to the study board for me... I guess it's true that a 4.0 doesn't mean much (for ASU nursing) without a competitive TEAS score. If that info is accurate, I highly doubt I will get in for Fall semester. Can you guys tell me what you did to study for the Teas test?

Thanks a bunch.

Regarding the "I know so far 30 people have 87% and 4.0 GPA"......consider the source. Not terribly reliable in my view.

ATI offers a study guide along with McGraw-Hill. It's probably not a bad idea to get both. ATI also offers an online TEAS exam simulation (for a fee) that really helps getting used to the actual testing process. It's a little like studying for the SAT or ACT test - lots of general knowledge stuff. You get two chances with the TEAS at ASU, but my advice is to prepare like you've only got one shot at it - prepare, prepare, prepare. If you get a good score the first time out, great, no pressure on the second try where you can do even better.

It's not easy but you CAN do it. Keep your focus......

Good luck!

At least you have a 4.0 to start with! After hearing that so many people are applying with this high of a total score I am also getting very nervous. I am applying with a 3.93 and a 88% on my TEAS - meaning that I can only pass those with a 4.0 if they score less than a 85% on their TEAS. Even though there is only a week left (hopefully!) until we find out if we made it, it feels like an eternity. :uhoh3:
