Associates in RN w/ Husband, 2 kids and working....is it possible?

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

I currently have 2 kids (2 year old daughter & 6 week old daughter). I would like to go to nursing school and obtain my associates degree. The waiting list here at my college is 2 years just to get into the clinicals. I plan to work part time (24 hours), take 1-2 courses per quarter and be able to take care of a 2 year old and 6 week old. I cannot get into this program until Fall 2010 so I do have some time to think this over. There are 5 online courses that I can take, so this will help me be able to stay at home and work on my own time. By the time my clinicals roll around, my oldest will be almost 5 and my youngest will be 2 1/2 years old. I thought if I were to go back now and take any classes offered online, then I won't have to be away from my kids. Our clinicals here are not offered in the summertime, so this will also give me summers off or I will be taking 1 class (like A&P or Microbiology). This way I'm only away from the kids 2 days per week. I love my kids. They are my life! But I'm tired of working job after job with no advancement opportunities and no place to go! All I have is a high school diploma.

My passion is to work labor & delivery and only work part time.

it's absolutely possible! i'm married with four kids and i work part time. i started taking pre-reqs 3 years ago when my kids were 2,4,6, and 7. i was just accepted into the rn program starting this august :) my family has always been my biggest motivation and i've done really well. it takes a lot of dedication and hard work, but it's most definitely worth it. good luck!!

I'm going to be in the same boat! I have a son who is almost 4 and am getting ready to give birth to another baby in July. I'm not ready to start classes in the Fall (although I might try to squeeze in 1 online class, if I can), and I also work part-time. My husband works full-time. I'm a little nervous about going back to school, especially with all the family obligations, but I know I can do it! And so can you!

I have 2 daughters ages 14 and 11 and I plan on becoming a nurse to..it can be done...All you gotta do is have the will for it..

Yes, it is possible. Family support will be key. I returned to school last Spring taking prerequisites and can't believe how time flies. I have officially applied to Nursing School and playing the waiting game now. My advice is to not procrastinate, if nursing is your passion, then go for it and don't look back. Online classes have been awesome for me, but you must put in your own time and effort. My husband is off Fridays and those were my "homeschool" days...lol....they have daddy time and i get my school work done. Plus throughout the week when my smallest naps it is great time for schoolwork. Remember your kids will benefit from this as well. Also, coming from a previous degree where all I was worried about was that passing "C", in nursing it is more about taking your time, understanding the subject and attaining that highest possible grade, because it is very competitive. Good Luck!!!!

Yep, it can be done. I have two kids about the same age as yours will be when you start NS. I started pre-reqs last year on top of my full time 40+ hour a week job. My husband is also a Volunteer Firefighter and very active at his station. It was a bit of a struggle at first to manage our time but after a few months we got into a great routine that worked for everyone.

Take one class to start just to get your feet wet and see how you will need to adjust. After that, add more classes as you can. I took 10 credit hours last semester on top of everything else and while it was pretty hectic at times, we all made it out alive.

If you have the drive and determination, anything is possible.

I am in the same boat with the rest of you :) I have a son that will be 7 next month and a daughter who will be 3 in Dec and I will be 36 in Sept! I am down to my last pre-nursing required class for one nursing school and have 1 more pre-req for a different nursing school that I am taking in the fall. I plan on applying to both this fall. Hopefully I will get a slot in the spring 2011 semester. It has been a journey and family support is key! I work full time and have already completed 2 full years of school taking night courses! I am so ready to get into a nursing clinical program! Good luck to you and everyone else floating in the same boat!

Very possible. If a single, working mom can do it you can too; especially having a husband. He will need to pick up extra chores so prepare him. Good luck
