associate degree from America to canada

Published

Hi all, I am in a bit of a situation. I am currently a Canadian international student who's attending college at college of southern Nevada. I need to complete my bachelors program in order to work in Canada as an RN. I just found out yesterday that I can't go to the school that has a bridge program with CSN because it's all online and and as an international student I'm not allowed to complete an online program. does anyone know if I'm able to complete my associates degree here in the states and upgrade back in cananda for my bachelors ? Or will I have to go through another 4 years of school? Switching states is not an option for me :( anything helps .. Thank you

You would have to try and find a diploma RN to BSN bridge program in Canada and ask them if they would accept you.

Yeah I've been doing some research on that today. It just sucks I've done 2 years of pre reqs and will have to do another two years of nursing for an associates degree which is equivalent to the two year program in cananda. I'll figure it out, thanks for the quick reply!

Best question is will an ADN even be accepted as an RN in Canada? If they were earned before 2009, yes. Current ones are evaluated individually

Yeah, I think they are only seen as an LPN then I'll have to find a school to upgrade to my bachelors degree. 6 years of school for a bachelors degree lol should have just stayed in cananda. Oh well, making the best of it :)

you could consider something like the UBC program which you is 5 consecutive semesters & only takes applications from students who have 2 yrs minimum of post sec.

BCIT is 6 semesters/3yrs. Direct entry programs seem rarer here so it's not unusual for people to finish an associates or even a full bachelor's while waiting to get into the BScN programs.

If your goal is to work as a RN in Canada, go to school in Canada, taking an associates degree in the US and hoping that you will work as a RN in Canada isn't logical career planning.

Yeah I will have my associates degree here in the states .. I've done 2 years of pre reqs and have about 2 years of nursing classes to do here to obtain associates ! My school really did not inform me of a lot of things and didn't do a good job of helping me. I've paid a lot of money as an international student and for international students to pay as much as they do, the international office should know their job better! Lol thanks for your help I'll look into it all :)

Well I moved here two years ago with my boyfriend and I had never even heard of an RN associates degree because I'm quite young and that was taken out of ontarios system in 2005, so when I applied to the RN program, an RN bachelors degree was all I knew. I moved to the states because he got a job here and I needed an adventure lol so thought I'd tag along and get a degree while I was here. I'm not planning on getting an associates degree and hoping they will accept it as an RN in cananda, I'm just trying to figure out some options here since I've already completed all my pre reqs here in the states. The whole reason I ran into this problem is because my school told me when I came here that they do the associates degree and have a bridge program with another school to do my bachelors degree so that was my plan. A couple days ago I was informed that they were incorrect and didn't realize this other school doesn't accept international students. You would think the international office would know this stuff lol. so just trying to figure out my next step since my international office is of no help obviously :)

Are you aware that several US BSN educated Canadians have had their education assessed by NNAs and deemed not comparable to a Canadian BSN?
