I just want to see how many of us there are out there this semester. Here we go:
How many of us 30 somethings are out there?
How many of us are making a career change?
Well you guessed it, I'm a 30 something (37 according to my birth certificate but I think it is lying ) and making a complete career change. I currently work in an office and am tired of it. This is the third time I've considered going in to nursing and the furthist I've gone toward getting a degree. Wish I had done it many years ago.
:icon_roll I was going to say I'm 31 but I have posted my true age above-oh well. Anyway, I'm completing my prereqs for the lpn-rn program. I've been an lpn for 16 years and it's time to move forward. I will be done with the prereqs in August(i hope!!!!!!) and then I will wait for my name to be called. Waiting lists are lame:o. I figure I'll be maybe 42 when I graduate the rn program. Then it's Miller time:cheers:.
I always love threads like this. It makes me feel so "normal"! I am 32 working on my pre-reqs and hope to apply to the nursing program after the fall of 2008!!! Yay. Our program has an average of an 18 month wait, so I won't get in until 2009 or 2010. I will be 37 almost 38 when I graduate with my Associates degree!!!! It sounds so normal now, but I feel odd when talking to the 18-21 yr olds in my class. So glad there are a lot of others like me out there.

edit - Forgot to add that I am a SAHM to 4 kids with an older (by almost 20 yrs) husband. So I am planning for the future and in case he goes before me, I need to have a way to support myself and my family. I love the compassion of nurses and feel that I am a very caring and giving person, so Nursing fits me perfect.
I'm 36 with two young children. I'm just finishing up Micro this semester and hoping for the best to get into the Fall 08' RN program. I just took the TEAS test for the second time and scored in the 95% for national rank, I scored a 79% the first time around. Two semesters of sciences really helped boost my score!I have a 3.81 GPA. I've really been working my rearend off to get into this program. Our letters go out in March. I wish all of you the best of luck in pursing your dreams of a nursing career. I have an interview today for an upscale restaurant here in the Lehigh Valley as a server. My husband and I decided we need to suppliment our income. I've been a SAHM for 6 years. My little guy was injured at birth and suffered a paralyzed arm:-( I'm hoping to get into L & D to make a difference in the quality of care for laboring mothers. :redpinkhe
Been there, done that. 4 + years ago decided to go into nursing and started taking prereqs at night. Last August quit my full time job that I had held for almost 21 years and in September started nursing school. I am so glad that I made that change. I love it and am looking forward to finally being a nurse. The plan is to graduate by Dec. 2009. Oh and by the way, I turned 40 in November. Sigh. Good luck and don't let your age impede you in any way. It is only a number after all. (Yea, I do wish it was a smaller number, but I am amazed at how many of my classmates are around my age) Best regards, Jean
I am 32 years old and having a"what are you gonna do with your life moment?" I was married 14 years and stayed at home and ran a home daycrae so I could be with my children. I am going through a divorce, and my kids are all in school so it's time to focus on me!I will be starting Nursing School in Fall!! Never thought I would get there, but it's happening so Im going with it! I wish you all the best. Everything happens for REASON!!!!
Hi,
I am 33 and just started working on my pre reqs. I have a 2 yr old and a 5 yr old so its tough. I am having to take a dev algebra class that is kicking my butt so I am worried about passing it. I even considered dropping my classes and just going for the LVN. I am hoping to just make it though the math. I so hate math and dont even need a math class for RN, its just those darn tsi requirements. Uggghhh
Anyhow, I wonder sometimes if I am doing the right thing. It takes a lot of time away from my family and sometimes feel quilty about it. I have been a stay at home mom for 5yrs.
Anyhow, I know its going to be tough but I try to think about the future and smile when I think about becoming a RN. I would love to work in L&D or postpartum unit.
Glad to know there are others like me out there doing the same thing.

Hi everyone,
I'm 34 with a bachelors of fine arts. "worked" in theater for about ten years. never was paid for it but managed, founded and ran 3 different companies in Los Angeles and New York. Been working days as an executive assistant for more than 10 years. SO ready to be making the change to nursing. Although all the work in other fields I think will serve me as a nurse, i can't wait to make actually get into a program and get started. At first I thought that being a bit older would be a disadvantage but I have a friend who is 19 and spent the past year trying to get into 2nd degree nursing programs (she's a bit of a brainiac and got an early bachelors by 18) still she was unable to get into a program. Off the record she was told by several people that she was simply too young and thus not considered a good risk for their programs. So maybe we wiser older students are considered to be more of a safe bet since we've had the chance to try out a career or two and discover what we really want. here's hopin' !
Hello,
I am a 33 year old single mother of an 11 year old son. I am also in my 3rd of 5 semesters of a BSN program. I worked for a telecommunications company for 14 years before I took the plunge into nursing school. I completed my Associates of Science in nursing (pre-reqs) while working for my previous company and had them pay for it. So, I started nursing school with no student loans. It took me 4 years of going to school partime and throughout the summers to get my AS. So, far, it's been great and I'm glad I took the risk!
I also work as a Nurse Intern II on a Med/Tele floor and the experience has been great and has helped me so much in clinicals and with my time management skills.
I will be 35 when I graduate in May of 2009. I plan on going into the OR because I crave structure and routine (chalk it up to my corporate background) and I strive best in a structured background (although you will see something different everyday). As much as I love patient interaction, floor nursing is not for me. I like the thought of working with one patient at a time and working as a team to take care of the patient and I can get that in the OR.
Good luck to everybody!

I'm 38 and working on prereq's, will start NS when I'm 39 or 40. I'm a SAHM at the moment but I've spent my life working at various low-level customer service and clerk type jobs and am TIRED of it! I told my husband when I had to go back to work it had to be at something I wanted to do cause I think I'd hang myself if I had to go back to the call center I worked at before I had my twins in '06. Loved the people, *hated* the work!
My degree is in music education but I never made a career of that. I just finished my nurse aide training today and I take the state test 2/15. And I already have a job interview lined up next week for a PCA job at a local hospital, hopefully there will be several more after that! Is it weird that I am actually looking forward to wiping butts and all that??
Karen, soon to be professional butt-wiper :)
