Arrival in US -- what to expect, what to do

Published

Now that many of you that were affected by the retrogression have now received green cards and will be arriving in the US soon, I think that we should now have a thread focusing on that. As well as for all of the others from different countries.

Where to go to purchase initial items that will be needed. What to expect the first weeks of being a new resident in the US, etc. Many of us have are special places to find things.

What about if I would run out of gas on the street, and there is no gas station there. The distance in the US are very long. Who should I call ?

There are so many gas stations all over, that this is hardly ever an issue. Always try to not get less than 1/4 tank of gas in your car. I ran out of gas once when I was in nursing school, and swore that it would never, ever happen again.

I will be moving over the next week or two closer to LA. I will be in and out, so it may take me a few days to respond to your messages. But I promise to answer them..............

Still have quite a bit of packing to do, etc.

[Good luck to your new place! I know how it is.

[Thnks for info !

Thanks for the kind thoughts................How are things going for you right now?

[Thanks for the question. I am looking for a furnitured room for myself, here in Sacramento. Problem to get a good one until 450 $.Since I do not know where is a good area to live in, I have to check a lot of places. Some places are really not very nice so I have to return back with no results. Pretty hard for a new starter. But it has to be better! The better time will come !

Lots of hugs for all the girls from this forum(((()))))!

Today I have to go to the DMV (Driving licence..) to get some info.I think I have to pass a test in order to transfer TX Driver licence..... :specs:

Hi Friends: I hope each one of you are doing fine in this long and difficult immigration process. I hope to be in US in about 2 months, and I need a hint on NJ cost of living. See, I'm planning ot travel and stay alone until I can begin working. The facility will provide me with housing since arrival, but I will have to face my expenses until I effectively begin working. So, I'm a little concerned about how much money should I need. I mean, I'd like to know, if someone has an idea, how much these expenses would be excluding housing. Thank you very much.

Depending on which part of New Jersey that you will be in, the costs can vary. But you can base things on the per diem rate that we get for travel, and that is about $40 per day. It will probably be less for you, but depending on if you need to use transportation, etc.

That will allow you to see things in the area as well.:)

Wireless cable modem is my preference.............averages about $40 to $50 per month, again will depend on where you live.

Social Security Number is all that you need for opening the account. When you start work, find out which bank that your facility uses, you can usually get a discount from that bank.

Hi Suzanne: Since I've learned that it'll take about 3 weeks, or so, to have a SSN, and now learned that I need the SSN to open a bank acconunt. So, I don't know xactly what I'd do with the money I have to bring, I mean where should I keep it? Isn't there the prossibility to open a bank acccount without the SSN, just with my pasport and residence visa on it? That will be a real problem to solve.

Hi Suzanne. Thank you for the information. I don't know where I'll be living yet. And I hope the utilities to be covered, but don't know. The facility is in Somerset. I hope to spend less than that, if I cook most of the meals. But I'll calculate the needed money based on your information. Again, thanks a lot!

Dear Suzanne,

My friend has just passed the NCLEX exam under New Mexican BON which is arranged by the agent. Now the agent wants her to decide which state to go to. Could you kindly advise where is the nice or ideal place to start with? We have little idea about the living and working environment in USA. She is currently working in Singapore, posted at the operation room, but she wish to work in oncology.

Thank you.
