Interesting read from AZ state board of nursing

I was on the State Board of Nursing (AZ) site browsing last night. I ran into

a very interesting read at:

I was unable to copy and paste it, (I guess because it is a .pdf file.) The doc

is about the difficulty of new grads in finding positions. Worth a read if you

are looking for a job or a nursing student.

Curious why the individual who thinks nursing is such a horrible job invested so much time and money in completing the program instead of just moving on.

De-pressing! BUT, one has to hope that the economy will be turning around in the next 2-3 yrs and things will improve. It can't stay this way forever. We just need to perservere and make as many connections within the healthcare industry as we can!

It's crazy to think of how different things are now, as compared to just a few short years ago. Four years ago, I had just been on my unit a few months, and we had tons of new grads ..... was even kind of scary the new grad to experienced nurse ratio.

A couple of years ago MMC was offering a 20K sign on bonus, for a one year commitment.

Things changed fast, so hopefully they'll change back quickly enough.

I have seen a few places bringing back small sign on bonuses. This leaves me hopeful that things will/are getting better.

From a RN that graduated a few years ago and didn't work to stay at home with my family...I'm really kicking myself now! Yeah, how things have changed. I read that article. And the one about even if you take a refresher course you'll never find a job. Yeah, depressing is right. I guess it's all about hoping it'll turn around in a couple of years like the PP said. What else can we do?

I live in Virginia but am moving to AZ for a number of reasons one being a job in the field I want to work in. Anyway, from a management perspective, I would like to offer some wisdom.1. The cost of orienting a new RN is about 75,000. This is a strain on many facilities especially those that are struggling right now.

2.There is a huge gap between education and practice. There needs to be a revamping of the nursing education system so students can transition better.

3. The board pass rates are dropping overall in the nation.

4. Many nurses are not prepared and unable to practice safe care with limited resources and staffing.

5. Litigation is increasing in many areas.

I have seen many lose their jobs after their 90 days because they cant function in their new job. I, personally, try to work with them as long as it is feasible.
