How marketable is the ADN?

U.S.A. Arizona

Published

I'm starting the fast track program at southwest skill center in Feb. Anyone been there or heard anything good/bad about the program?

They said it's the same nursing pathway that all the MCC's follow and it's under Gateway CC. So this program is so far only the first year (LPN) and then if they don't implement the 2nd year I will have to transfer to one of the other MCC's. That is fine with me I just want to get this done with. Anyone here transferred between MCC and was it easy to transfer the nursing classes?

How marketable is the ADN vs the BSN here in PHoenix? I would love to go right into the hospital setting as a new grad. Been reading up on CC a lot.

Thanks.

Rebecca

ADNs are quite marketable in Arizona, as well as everywhere else.

Have you really looked into the program. Not all of the classes are transferable (1st block isn't) and you will still have to do the ADN prereqs. I assume the actual nursing ones are transferable as they are the same as the CC. But you can work as an LPN while doing the prereqs. But you will have to do the prereqs eventually.

I have done research and an ADN and BSN are both very marketable. AZ is so short of nurses (especially when the snowbirds come down) I don't think they care what degree you have. An RN is an RN here.

If you want to work in direct patient care, you can get a job just as easily with an ADN as you would with a BSN.

Andrea,

Thanks for the link. Where did you hear that the classes were not transferrable? I spoke with someone who is in the program, and she did tell me you have to do the prereqs before you can do the second year. But when I went to the orientation they told me all the classes would transfer with the MCC. Was I misinformed?

I looked at the Rio Salado link that you sent through and that is the exact same class schedule/credit hours that they gave me at the school. It is the same sheet of paper I believe. So why wouldn't it be transferrable? I'm going to call the advisement office tomorrow, but I would appreciate any info you have.

The actual nursing ones are transferable as far as I know. The ones belowaren't. When I said block 1 I meant these not the actual nursing block. Sorry I reread my post and it did come off as not alot were and that wasn't what I meant. But most are transferable. I find it really expensive going this way as compared with the cc.

MSC/PN Prerequisites -5 Weeks

The Maricopa Skill Center offers several MSC-only courses (nontransferable), which cover material (selected information from required college prerequisite courses) necessary for the Practical Nursing level. MSC reserves the right to modify or add to its prerequisites at any time.

Andrea,

Thanks for the reply!

You mentioned expense. I noticed it was expensive but my rational for this is that I got in and it seems like nursing programs have waits so I'm going for the one that I can get in first. And your right, after the year I can take the NCLEX-PN, finish out my prereqs and finish up the ADN. I'm not sure how much I'd work as a practical nurse. Maybe I could find something that was part time 1-2 days a week, I'm not sure.

So have you done the CC nursing program yet? Which school did/are you going to? Have you heard the rumor about SWSC/EMCC adding on the 2nd year of the program? I've heard this but no one is able to give me an answer of if it will really happen. One girl told me if/when they do, the PN grads will get priority on a slot over others.

Thanks for all your help!

I am doing the prereqs at Rio. I will be finishing up my last prereqs (CNA and microbiology) in the spring so I will apply for the fall. From what I heard the maximum wait right now is one semester. It depends on the college you pick. If you pick one that didn't have alot of applicants you could get in the first semester you try. I have to pay out of pocket or do loans so I needed the cheapest route. It seems like the cost for just the lpn at the skill centers are more expensive thant he whole RN program.

FYI, the red cross has a CNA class for appx 800 (went up as of oct 1) which is still cheaper than the swsc/emcc. And the day one is only 3 weeks and I have heard they have good pass rates.

Good luck.

Do you know which schools these are?

Sorry for all the questions! I just hardly ever run into people who know a lot about these programs.

So what are you going to do during your semester wait after the spring?

Where in Phoenix are you located? I'm in W. Phoenix. Are You applying to Rio Salado for the nursing program? I'm taking one of my bio classes and my psych class there. I love online classes.

Hi, Rebecca ... I'm in west valley, also, and taking a few Rio online classes (as I think you are). Have you taken any of the chemistry classes online? I'm not liking the bio classes as much as I thought I would, primary reason is you don't get answers to online quizzes; I missed 2 on a quiz a few weeks ago and am going nuts trying to figure out which ones of the 20 were incorrect! Are you going to try for the accelerated program when you've met your prereq's?

ADN's have a wide open job market. Good luck.
