How marketable is the ADN?

Published

I'm starting the fast track program at southwest skill center in Feb. Anyone been there or heard anything good/bad about the program?

They said it's the same nursing pathway that all the MCC's follow and it's under Gateway CC. So this program is so far only the first year (LPN) and then if they don't implement the 2nd year I will have to transfer to one of the other MCC's. That is fine with me I just want to get this done with. Anyone here transferred between MCC and was it easy to transfer the nursing classes?

How marketable is the ADN vs the BSN here in PHoenix? I would love to go right into the hospital setting as a new grad. Been reading up on CC a lot.

Thanks.

I've taken BIO156 and Micro through Rio. I'm just finishing up A&P I there, and will be registering for the A&P II that starts in November.

I've taken a quite a few online courses at Rio and one at Glendale (Health care organizations). From my perspective, Rio is much more organized. My complaint at Glendale is you can't print out online lessons without losing text to the print margins. That's pretty annoying, but even more so is being given responsibility for 3 or so chapters and 25 web sites and not knowing what the lesson objectives are! :uhoh21:

Hi, Rebecca ... I'm in west valley, also, and taking a few Rio online classes (as I think you are). Have you taken any of the chemistry classes online? I'm not liking the bio classes as much as I thought I would, primary reason is you don't get answers to online quizzes; I missed 2 on a quiz a few weeks ago and am going nuts trying to figure out which ones of the 20 were incorrect! Are you going to try for the accelerated program when you've met your prereq's?
The chem class I'm taking is at EMCC. I'm taking bio 156 and my psych class online at rio salado. I should have just taken the chem class online. I thought with the math that I'd need more help but I seem to be understanding it well enough through the text. Lectures never hurt though! And my teacher is pretty cool.

So for those of you who've taken A&P online, how was it? Was it really hard?

The program I'm going into is the EMCC/SWSC LPN program. It is the first two blocks of the ADN program and I start in Feb. I have to then finish out my prereqs afterwards and transfer them to finish out the ADN program, so I'm not sure which school I will go to after I'm done with my LPN. The three I'll try for will probably be Rio, Gateway and Glendale.

I compared the costs last night like Andrea brought up. The CNA that I'm going to take is not more expensive than the red cross one, but the two blocks are more expensive than the first two blocks doing the traditional MCC program. The program seems to be pretty popular, so I guess it's the price we pay for being able to get our LPN's doing this "fast track" program. We all have different ways of achieving our goals, but with hard work the end result will be the same for all of us!

So there seem to be quite a few of us nursing students on the Az board. Has there ever been a roll call or introduction?

I wish I knew which schools would give the best shot. But it can change each semester. I think the max you can pick is 5 or 6 and I will be choosing 5 or 6 choices. The more flexible you are the better chance of getting in. But I am told that most schools don't have more than a one semester wait. Rio will be my 1st choice, followed by Gateways acclerated, then glendale cc and phoenix college. I will apply in the Spring for the fall.

I have done bio 156, chem 130 and a bunch of other classes online. I am currently doing bio 201 and 205 online. I love online classes. Lots more work than in person but from talking with others doing in person classes (we were doing our healthcare provider cpr class) online are more in depth. So that is good. Still they aren't harder, imo. Plus, as a stay-at-home mom I wouldn't be able to take classes in person yet so I would still be waiting to start pre-reqs.

I live in nw Phoenix right now, used to live central/northern area and am waiting for my house in Surprise to be ready. It is supposed to be ready Oct. 22.

Rebecca -- I like the idea of a roll call; I'll start a new thread called "Roll Call" so we can formally introduce ourselves (I'm sure some of you who've been on here awhile have seen other newbies try this before, right?). Look forward to "meeting" you all.

Hi ayndim - I really appreciate your posts -- question ... are you taking BIO201 & 205 at the same time? I thought one was prereq for the other ... am I wrong?

So another question, do all the schools have programs that start every semester? I was a little confused looking at the MCC application I have. It looked like some schools over have start dates once a year? Or maybe I was misunderstood...

I love the online classes too. As long as I can have quiet study time every night, I can get through it pretty easily. And my kids are laid back enough that I get a lot of studying done during the day. I am a sahm too. I have two little boys, one is 4, one is 10 months old. So what are you going to do with your children once you start nursing school? My 4 year old will be in preschool/daycare full time and my 10 month old (starting in Feb) is going to be watched by a friend of mine.

Congrats! Funny thing, we did the same thing 2 years ago (new build home) and moved in on Oct 22nd also! Our closing was about a week before that. It was very exciting. You must be thrilled! We are in the southwest Phoenix area right outside of Avondale. We moved here when my husband was still working downtown though, now he has a commute all the way across town to I-17 & loop 101. So after I'm finished with my LPN program we are moving North again. Used to live in N. Glendale/Arrowhead area. We've been in Phoenix a little over 2 years now and LOVE it.

Great! I'm actually really excited to find on this forum a bunch of you guys who are going through the same thing as me, in the same place. What a great source of info!

No, BIO156 is a prereq for both. I took them at the same time (actually, I started 205 in June, and 201 in July, so they were kind of staggered).

Kerry - have you taken the Rio chem classes? If so, are they acceptable, or would you have rather taken them in-class? I'm having trouble figuring out if one can do chemistry online, with only minimal actual lab time ... your perspective is appreciated!

Also ... do you have your CNA yet? If so, how did you get it (via Rio or some other educational institution)?

I know you didn't ask me, but I'll weigh in about the Chm class. I think if you are decent at math, and have a fairly easy time with memorizing, then you should be fine with an online class. i am taking Chm at EMCC right now but I now realize I could have taken it online. It's not easy, but it's not hard. I'm good at math, and memorizing the actual periodic table was simple enough with repetition. I actually think I'm going to get an A in this class. And speaking of chm, I have to go study now...

Sorry for hijacking the thread, but for anyone else that might be interested, Rio's hybrid online classes are the way to go as you have a few easier experiments done at home and the more difficult experiments are done at a Rio location, around town, of your choice. The Rio location experiments happen 3 times during the semester. Also, the instructors are very helpful, probably too helpful. :chuckle
