What hours do you work and what dept/unit do you work in? I have an understanding that most units are run on 12 hr shifts, 7-7pm or 7-7am...I am sure that is not the case for every department. However, I was wondering what is a normal shift for any given unit?

After seeing the thread about the Baylor plan, I was wondering about the variety of shifts that are out there.

I'm actually still a student but I'm interested in what everyone else will say on this topic. What I found out so far about 40/hr shifts is to be full time nurses work 3-12/hr one week and then the second week they do 3-12hr with one 8/hr shift(evening my guess?). That way in 2 weeks they can have 80/hrs for full time benefits. I thought that was clever but still sucks that you gotta work 4 days a week the 2nd week.

At banner facilities, and most facilities, full time is 36 hours a week for nurses.

If you work in surgery or PATS/PACU or an ER, there is alot of flexibility in shift hours compared to if you work a traditional floor. Also, this 12 hour shift thing is mainly an AZ and/or SW USA idea. Many parts of the USA offer 4, 8, 12, and 16 hours shifts in all areas of nursing.

Thanks for everyone's answers.

I work dayshift 0645 to 1915. I'm part time and work 3 shifts a pay period. One week I work one day, and the next week I work 2. My schedule works great for having three kids at home.

I want your shift when I graduate. I want to work part time. But I am sure that it is better for me to work full time first and then transition to part time. I have three kids under 9 yo at home also.

Thanks again for everyone's input. It seems like most of you work the 12 hour shifts.
