On your unit, do you hear rumors increasing about hiring freezes? Are you already on a freeze? Or, are any of them letting up yet?
Obviously we have to wait out the economy to some extent, but just curious...
Thanks for any response!

I have not heard officially that we are on a freeze but I think it's pretty obvious.
On some floors it is obvious, but some other people are posting that they are still seeing new hires come in. Trying to get a sense of which hospitals are still open. For example, WPIC has stopped hiring anyone for inpt. They actually laid off at least 1 RN.

My floor is on a hiring freeze and has been on one since Novemberish. At the same time, we have lost at least 3-4 RN's, which my boss has not been given approval to replace, so things can get tight sometimes. Plus, they discourage overtime.

I am graduating NS in June. I just received a call from one of the nurse recruiters from Presby to schedule an interview on one of the medical units over on the Montifiore side. Two of my friends just got hired on 10 east and south floors at Montifiore. There are still a ton of GN positions (or RN) posted on the UPMC website (most are for Presbyterian Hosp. I have actually applied for 10 different floors including Medical, General Surgical, ICU, cardiac ICU, trauma, PACU, DEM and I can't remember what other ones. I was worried about getting a job but I think I'll be O.K.
Presby/Montifiore are holding strong but the smaller hospitals aren't hiring much it seems.

and how about the lovely "raise freeze" email!
I'm interviewing for the 11th floor at Montifiore on Tuesday. Two of my friends just got hired on the 10th and the 12th floor. They are still offering incentives such as chatham college online at half price with $3500 in tuition reimbursement, (that's a savings of close to $12,000) flexable scheduling and free pitt tuition. If there was a freeze you would think they wouldn't offer that anymore.
The small hospitals in the Latrobe/Greensburg have hired a few GNs but not like they used to. I applied and got my "thanks but no thanks" email
You cannot go to Pitt for free. They pay 100% of $3500, meaning you don't start to pay out of pocket until your tuition bill reaches $3501...it's all semantics
I Just interviewed yesterday. My delusions of major tuition assistance were set straight. $3500 in tuition assistance if you go to Pitt and 1500 in tuition assistance if you go somewhere else. That's it. They're really tricky with how they word that.

At WPAHS you get 3500.00 in tuition assistance anywhere you choose to go for additional education. The key word being "tuition". The system pays only the tuition portion of your classes, none of the fees (which can be substantial). All classes must be approved BEFORE you start the class. Woe to the nurse who takes a course and then applies for reimbursement. They are pretty quick at reimbursing you if your paperwork is correct.
