Its kinda of scary reading a lot of the posts on here. It seems as if, so many nurses are not satisfied with their careers. So many people are so tired, aggrevated or stressed. This is so discouraging because, nursing has been a dream that I have felt for so long now. Im currently in my second semester and so far loving it, but is that all going to change once I graduate? Does everyone hate it, is any one happy??? PLEASE SHARE SOME POSITIVE STORIES IF THERE ARE ANY?????
I believe we use this board to "vent" to each other because we understand the ins and outs and the unique circumstances involved in nursing. Its not meant to chase off new blood, we need you. I love my career:p Although there are days when I ask myself "why", I couldn't have chosen a better fit for myself. The wonderful thing about nursing is that I actually make a difference in someone's life. Whether its in the ER in the middle of a trauma, or at the bedside holding a hand, or sitting in the dining room at a LTC facility listening to an elderly lady talk about her childhood. Its the big things, as well as the little ones that make a difference in people's lives, and I play a small role in that everyday.
Plus, if you get "burnt out" in one area, you move on for awhile to a new one. When ER gets "old" and I'm feeling jaded, I move to Peds, or Nursery, or even a little time spent at LTC can be rejuvenating.
Please, don't take all the venting to heart, read between the lines. Nursing is a wonderfully rewarding career.
My job is where my heart is. I can honestly say that there is nothing else in the world I would rather do than to nurse. I have tried other jobs but there has been nothing that has been as rewarding, for me, as nursing. The thank you's and good job's are few and far between sometimes but you feel as if your are floating when they do come. Some days the best feeling are when no one even knows the kind of job you have done, not even the patient themselves. Those days when you have a patient that doesn't even know your in the room but you take the time to do mouth care rather than leaving this menial task to the nurses aide (if she has time to do it). Or when you search 3 different floors for that bedtime snack that your pt really wants and has no idea what you had to go through to get it. But the best things are when you know the things you have done, using your knowledge and your skills, on that 8 or 12 hour shift has helped someone to live another day, now that is the best feeling. We all certainly suffer from burn out at one time or another. You can't work in this field full time and not face it at some point. The key is keep nursing from your heart. Continue learning and advancing your skills and it will never get old. I hope you continue your nursing education and go on to truely enjoy your career.

I've been an RN for 19 years. Enjoy it. Love the flexibility and educational opportunities. Love making a difference in peoples lives. Don't get disheartened by the grumbling. Nurses need to vent and learn from each other. This board allows for that, so it is very healthy. Like any job, there is THE REALITY of the field, the obstacles we face on a daily basis. It is good to talk about it and get it out of our system so we don't carry it in the next day. I love being a nurse. I wouldn't have been in the field for so long if I did not.

Since this is a second degree, and second career, I would like to say I am happy. Can't sugar coat it, nursing sure does have its moments and stress! Mostly at my job, from bad management.
But, then again, every time I think of my past 6 years as a broker in a market with some very bearish, voluble periods with customers where literally accusing me of making them homeless, stealing their assets, or ruining their Christmas, I can honestly say, Nursing ain't bad! Oh, and add to that being :encouraged: to cross sell products to poor schmucks who didn't know any better?
hummm.

I look forward to going to work every day. I work in a small hospital, in the Cath Lab, with a good group of peers and Cardiologists who are supportive, knowledgeable, compassionate, visionary and practical as well.
In whatever path one chooses to take, may each find his/her niche.
