After just shy of one year in LTC, my biggest problem is reconciling my desire to help and be compassionate with someone who persists in doing everything they can to undermine their health and quality of life. Anyone else have that disconnect between wanting to help and realizing you just can't???

Oh, yeah..........right now I'm dealing with a relatively young (age 55) resident with a looooooooooong history of chronic pain and psych issues who continually complains that he's not getting adequate pain relief, but every time we change his meds or make a doctor's appointment and transportation arrangements for him, he refuses the new medication and cancels the appointment, then gripes about how "nobody ever helps me". :uhoh3: I've spent countless hours listening to him, facilitating communication between him and the staff---none of whom understand this fellow whose issues are so complex---and trying to coordinate his medical and psychiatric care between the twelve or so providers he lists as "my doctor". I am a very patient woman and I love unraveling mysteries, but this poor guy is SO broken---and he does everything he can to get in his own way---that I'm coming to the conclusion that nobody this side of Heaven can fix what ails him. :banghead:

i can't say i'm sensitive, in that i cry at the drop of a dime.

but i am sensitive to others moods, needs, feelings.

and while i can come across as somewhat abrasive, i'm a very decent person.

one of those iron fist/velvet glove.:)

Wow. Perfect. I could have written that myself.

I definitely "feel" people and it is my strongest "talent", I guess you can say, with my patients (and the people around me, in general).

I am freaky sensitive in that way, but not sensitive in the sense that I hide in bathrooms and cry. ;)

Leslie: are you an INFJ, too?

I can be very very straight forward when I need to be, but am otherwise quiet. It can be off-putting.

I can seem quite cold, shy, reserved, whatever until you get to know me... then watch out!!! :clown:

It's just the way I am!
