I am a new member, and have, until now, thought that nursing was my calling...
I am trying to make a career change, and have always wanted to do this, but could never afford to until now.
However, after reading all the scary "There are no nursing jobs anywhere! Run for the hills!" posts, I am seriously second thinking it. I want to, but not if I literally can't get hired anywhere?
So are these folks exaggerating at all, or are there really no available nursing jobs to be found anywhere?

in my posts, i haven't been exaggerating. i have now applied to roughly 78 jobs - in state and out of state, med/surg, icu/er, private outpt office/sc and ltc, urban and suburban. i think i have a fairly decent resume, but maybe there is something i am missing....??
i am very realistic and know that there is no way i am getting my dream job right out of ns (although i never expected that). i am just freaking out for fear of going bankrupt and frustration of not being able to start my career.
i think things might get better around feb 2010, though. it seems some places that previously cancelled their new grad program, might open back up then. maybe all hope isn't lost.....
There will always be nursing jobs. Haven't you seen the health care boom news, everybody are getting older, mostly get sick, and even well clients need care. You are assured of a nursing career no matter what. Nevertheless, whether you are in for nursing in itself or " job stability " please, whatever the purpose maybe, do not be taken by the line---that you will be any less if you choose the latter.
Most people go into nursing because of economic reasons---so, there's nothing wrong with that.
Nursing has a broad field and specialties, you have so much to choose from and some may pay less than others but you have the widest options there is. Go for it!
Well I am certainly not going in it for economic stability.
I am much more intelligent than that, and have never thought of nursing as a "cakewalk" or "easy" in any way shape, or form.
I am starting over from scratch here, and could go any direction I choose. I choose nursing because I have a passion to help people and want a career where I can do that to the best of my ability. My reasons for wanting to go into nursing are I'm sure slightly different than other people's, but I have good intentions.
I just can't wait to get back into school again. I'm super excited. :typing
There were plenty of nursing jobs in my area (Seattle) last year for new grads. Now they just aren't there. I'm not sure when they will be, but many of us who worked as techs weren't hired on as RNs and can't find work elsewhere. Doesn't matter what people say about last year. Things have changed.
:yeah:EXACTLY!!
I am so glad I am not the only one that is on the hunt for a job. I wanted to concentrate on passing my boards so I did not start applying until now! I am so frustrated and need help as to what to do. I am a new BSN grad, passed boards with 75 questions, a member of Sigma Theta, a GPA of 3.45, received all sorts of awards and academic scholarship, as well I have a BS in another field as well as 8 years experience as a paralegal in NYC. I have applied everywhere in NY to no avail, no interviews, no call, no anything.....I am thinking that the second career move is a bad idea. I am about to fall back on my old career because my loans will be due in Nov 2009. The only thing that changed is that I applied at Mount Sinai and my application status online (which you can check) went from "Application Received" to "Unknown" and I sent my resume to an upstate hospital and that application status went from "Application Received" to "Forward to Nurse Manager" but this was done since Aug 12 and I haven't heard anything since. Does anyone know what these status change means?

This is a good stable career but imo one that needs to be done for passion as much as money and stability.
I can't speak for the OP but my thoughts are about those people that thought nursing would be a cake walk into a M-F 9-5 speciality for great money where you don't have to get your hands dirty based on the media reports of a nursing shortage. They are the folks who will be sorely disappointed with nursing no matter what the economy is doing.
