Are nurse's all that and a bag of chips?

Published

I have been a RN for 11 years now, have seen much as many of you have. One thing that continues to irk me are nurses that think because they are a nurse are somehow a cross between Florence Nightingale and Jesus--and act like it. You know, "super nurse syndrome"

I was at my local gym and saw the a T shirt that said:

I sacrificed my life, so I could save your life. I am a nurse.

Really? You sacrificed your life to be a nurse? WOW, I never realized that going to nursing school and getting a job involved life sacrifice.( like so many 100.000's people that go to college to get jobs).

GET OVER IT ALREADY, your a nurse, your not mother Theresa, you don't walk on water and you DID NOT sacrifice your life to become a nurse.

Nursing school and how hard it is, another thing that people want to whine/brag about I get tired of hearing about. Really? I'll bet becoming a chemical engineer is very hard, I'll be learning computer coding is very hard, in fact I'll bet most any college degree--they just don't hand them out for showing up. You have to work for them and earn them---just like nursing school.

What I am saying is being a nurse does not somehow set you apart from the rest of the world, or make you a better person---just because your a nurse.

Doing your job, being courteous to patients AND coworkers AND people in general is what we and everyone else on the planet should be doing----we are all members of the human family.

it's been scientifically proven that caregivers lose years off their life so that might explain why pple feel drained of life I do especially when caring for the elderly and if you detach and keep urself at a healthy distance u get judged as uncaring the. politics in nursing is rediculous

I had a hard time getting through the post because of grammar - your is not that same as you're. I don't understand how people get through college without knowing that. Regarding the content of the post though - Yeah I didn't sacrifice my life to be a nurse, just worked hard, studied hard and joined a great profession.

I totally agree that the tee shirt you saw was absurd. However, the one thing that, in my humble opinion, separates nursing from other professions is that we are responsible for saving lives and keeping people alive. I work nights in a teaching hospital so I know firsthand how often we prevent harm from coming to patients' at the hands of an inexperienced intern or resident. Another important factor is that, again in my humble opinion, no other profession has to deal with the level of disrespect and expectation to accept the verbal, sometimes physical, abuse that we take.

im really glad this topic has been posted.iv been an stna for more than no care to say. I decided two years ago to become a PTA and no way in HELL would ever become a nurse or have anything to do with that industry and the ego and self righteous know it all attitudes I saw so much of is why. ok yeah u gotta know a lot to be a nurse bit the majority of what they do on the floor is give patients their addictive narcotics and pain pills and chart like HELL. the whole field is all about saving ur ass and making other people look incompetent so you can look better. honestly iv lost my respect for nurses except for the 4 or 5 I know who are great people with or without the nurse title

You aren't a nurse. You have no frame of reference. Therefore, you can't really be expected to be taken seriously when you tell us how terrible we are.

I'm a nurse. My daughter is an accountant. When my shift is over, I'm free as a bird. When my daughter leaves work, she brings paperwork home. When I have days off, I get to do what I please. When my daughter has a day off, many times she's far from home on a business trip. Now tell me again whose life is sacrificed? ;)

I have a shirt that says "Be nice to me I'm a Nurse, I keep Doctors from killing you"

You're, not your...you made this grammatical error several times. What irks me is people not proofreading before they post a rant...and I say this seriously but not serious.

You are making me laugh describing what the "majority of what they do" to us. Sounds like a piece of cake job. Where do I apply? I also have to say the majority of aides I've worked with that seem to hate nurses the most or have 'no respect' for nurses are the ones constantly making nurses jobs harder because they aren't doimg theirs. And the ones not doing their jobs are more likely to have their nurses constantly on them but seem surprised and angry that a nurse would tell them to their job. It's definitely a no win situation for all involved when this is the case. Especially the patients. Hopefully you are not one of these people. Perhaps it is just where you worked? I know lots of wonderful nurses and aides myself.

Thank you for addressing this. I'm still in nursing school but every semester we have these self-centered, self-sacrificial, "look-at-me" shirts promoted to raise funds for the pinning. Each semester puts out a few variations so every six months we have plenty to pick from. I haven't purchased a single one because every one of them has the same message - "I'm better than you, I'm sacrificing everything for you" and truthfully it's revolting. The key to doing selfless acts is being humble, when you start throwing those "selfless acts" into people's faces you simply become an attention seeker and there is nothing honorable or selfless about that (now, it's ok to talk about nursing school or work experiences but this takes to a whole new level). I always felt a bit judgmental (and a bit guilty for not not siding with the majority) when I refused to buy a shirt and yet hundreds of people are voting for those designs and buying two or three of those shirts at a time. Now I see I'm not totally crazy.

Well, you sure showed us- that you don't know what the hell you're talking about.

Yes the job is demanding. It is also interesting, exciting, stimulating and fulfilling. I am content with my 35+ year career choice. I have invested a lot of my emotional self into my profession, running the gamut from shocked sobbing at my first death to semi-burn out, and back and forth and back and forth....the only thing I have sacrificed is family time, a modicum of sanity (20 years on the night shift) and my poor knees and feet, now in their 6th decade of supporting the rest of this slowly failing frame, lol!😁😊
