Are there any new grads that are struggling to find a hospital job in the GTA?

Published

It seems to me that many hospitals are opting to hire experienced nurses over new grads. Unfortunately, my consolidation is in a hiring freeze so despite my close professional relationship with the nurse manager, there's no way for me to be hired until their organization receives more funding from the government.

To the new grads that got their acute care jobs, how did you apply for your position? I'm finding it hard to get through HR. My online applications are getting rejected left and right -- very discouraging. :(

My other options are to apply elsewhere in Canada and be miserable for one year living in a rural area. I am not a fan of the prairies.

Try to network with your classmates who have landed jobs in hospitals. That's how I was able to get 2 interviews. I also just kept applying and was recently called in for an interview for Rouge Valley and I was recently hired at St. Mike's despite being a new grad.

Hi Canucks,

I just made an account to reply to your post because it sounds like we're in identical situations.

I was really banking on getting hired on my consolidation floor at one of the big hospitals in downtown TO, but they went on a hiring freeze as I was finishing my placement last March. I only got my first RN job a couple months ago with an agency, like you. I am actively looking for other jobs at the moment on job posting websites like Indeed.ca.

Curious to hear how your shifts have been going... and if we're with the same agency, hah. If you feel up for it message me to share experiences. If not, good luck! Easier said than done but don't get too discouraged, a lot of nurses nowadays are sending out literally hundreds of resumes to get one or two phone calls back.

I completely agree with you. I am a new grad just outside the GTA in Niagara and I have applied to every posting on indeed and I have got nothing not even an interview. I have resorted to messaging all my nursing friends asking for their managers email to email them directly. Next step is I am going to go to the floors personally to speak to managers!

Have you tried applying in the Hamilton area? I am a new grad RPN (graduated December 2015) and have gotten a job in one of the hospitals in Hamilton,in a non-acute setting. Although there were many more experienced nurses at the hospital system's nursing orientation, there were about 18 new grad RNs and RPNs that the hospital system hired.

Just keep applying to every single job posting you see (even if it's for a setting you may not really like), and you will eventually find something

GOOD LUCK!

I have but I haven't heard from the HR yet. I have no idea why they are not responding to my applications. Are they still hiring by any chance? And which hospital it? I'm willing to take outpatient clinics in the hospital too if given the chance...

No one ever replies on Indeed. :( The GTA is oversaturated of nurses unfortunately. Are you willing to relocate outside of Ontario? Good luck on your job search! I hope we both find something good!

It's the Hamilton Health Sciences hospital system (a family of 5 hospitals). And HR can take a while to respond to external applicants. Internal applicant always get priority when applying to postings (but that doesn't mean they won't hire external applicants). My hiring process did not take long because my job is through the New Graduate Guarantee, so my hiring process may be slightly different. Not sure if you still qualify to apply to the HFO new grad website, but don't limit yourself to postings only from HFO, keep in mind that new grads can get hired through positions posted on hospital websites (even if it does say experience required, apply anyways cuz you never know, they might end up considering you). As for if they are still hiring, HR posts new job postings Monday to Friday, and lately there have been nursing position open, so keep applying to every nursing opening posted.

BTW, did you get someone to review your resume? Sometimes it just takes a few adjustments to your resume and cover letters to get noticed by HR.

I concur that applying all over, outside your zone of confidence is probably your best bet. As to anyone else out there, as am I. My biggest problem is my age. 58 graduated last May, got my RN last August. My biggest geographical problem is the nearest metro area is DFW or Dallas-Fort Worth. Given the time or departure and arrival from home is about 1.5 to 2.5 PLUS!!! depending on traffic. Don't know the miles and areas you are talking about in CA, or is that KM?

I can't move as I own my property and sales are slow. I will rent for now when it does. Keep applying and not to sound morbid, but I love the poem, "Don't go gentle into that goodnight" ...of lost resumes into the electronic abyss. Keep plugging and bugging! Wishing us all good luck!

unfourtunately I'm stuck in the Niagara region my husband has a business here. I've heard back from a few managers actually from the emails I sent. So hopefully I get a call for an interview soon :). Good luck on your search as well!

I am also a new grad as well but got HFO position at a long term care. It took me 5 month to find the job! I have been trying to get into acute care, but I only had one interview which I did not make it (it was also HFO). I am willing to relocate just to get that experience, so I applied to Saskatchewan during a job fair I attended few weeks ago. They actually called me today to set up a phone interview. I am going to move if I get the position! GTA really is saturated... Only ones I heard back from indeed positions were clinics..

I graduated from Radiation Therapy at Michener in 2013, till this day, I have not received a single interview all over the country. I have applied to a few nursing schools but with what I am reading I am worried I will find myself in this situation again after graduating from nursing. Is the situation that bad for new grads. I am willing to relocate for jobs. Is it the same for all provinces.
