Are any new grads going to med-surg

I'm a new grad and decided to go to a pediatric med-surg unit. Everyone that I've talked to from my school is pretty much going to a specialty unit. I'm being to think that maybe I should have picked a specialty. And how do you decide what area would be a great place to start as a new nurse without any prior medical experience.:chair:

Im in my last semester, and I chose to do my clinical in the ER, I also wanted to specialize and skip the 1 yr med/surg, but also feel im being eaten alive, I also need to put my ego aside and develop thru med/surg as well.

What a difference half a semester can make! I'm doing good in med/surg clinicals, but I miss the kids...I think I'm losing my enthusiasm for med surg. Love the variety and patient care, skills, etc., but I think I may like having patients weighed in ounces (NICU), and not in pounds ;)

i have one semester left and i am considering working in med/surg--but my clinicals thus far have been horrendous. the nurses are too overworked and busy to be burdened with showing us anything and our clinical instructor really hasnt helped at all. do all y'all experienced nurses just expect that new nurse graduates know nothing because thats pretty much how i feel right now. nursing school is nothing but stress and yet i still feel like i know nothing!!!!

I also had horrible clinical experiences for the most part. The staff disappeared and were busy with their own issues. I can't say I blame them either. There was one facility. We were welcomed, even given hugs! The staff was excited for us joining nursing. This happened during my last clinical. I know there are nurses out there that want new nurses to successful and want to give us every chance and mentor us. We just keep our eyes open and find them. also, Ive had to say away from the negative posts on this, it can really bring you down. This is great place for info, and share experiences, but I think people are more likely to share bad experiences looking for support. Like they say, "good news travels fast, bad news travels faster"

the hospital I'm under scholarship with pretty much puts all new grads into med/surg for about (depends on staffing if you get out earlier lol) 6mos after lincensure which could be 3-6 mos after graduation depending on how long it takes for you to scheduele to sit boards. and their ER policy is 1 yr experience unless you have active license as EMT or paramedic

I was one who chose a specialty after graduating in December (NICU) but about half of my class went into med-surg and seem to be very happy with it. For those of you who are waiting to take NCLEX...good luck. I just recently passed mine and know what you are feeling.

I went into Med-Surg as a new grad in June, had nothing to do with grades or ability I think, more about going where I was needed and could find a well-rounded experience

I agree, I just passed the NCLEX and I been offered a position on the telemetry floor. But when I applied for the position I was just looking for where I was needed and what ever was open for First Shift.

i will go into med-surg once i passed the boards..med/surg or tele would be nice...then maybe late i will move into other areas of nursing..

It took me a while to figure out what positions to apply to, but I eventually settled on med surg too. The problem is that I'm interested in a lot of areas, but don't know which one to commit too. I also realized as a new nurse that I have a lot to learn still. I think there will be a lot to learn with a variety of clients, skills, etc. on a medsurg floor. One that I'm applying for (crossing my fingers that this one works out), has med-surg, tele, and oncology--can you imagine going bored on a floor like that? Not me. You could have just about anyone on a floor like that. And IF, I decided to pursue a specialty, I could go anywhere later. Honestly though, I'm not sure I'd want to leave when the variety that I want is all on the same floor ;)

One of the best lessons I've learned in nursing is not to compare myself to others. I used to think I was so dumb b/c I hadn't had 'such n such' experience in clinicals--but tell me, how many people have had every single possible skill/experience in clinical, and repeated enough times to be an expert, while in nursing school? So don't doubt your decision. Just make the best one for YOU, where you'll be happiest.

wow...i've gotten some great advice from y'all!!! i have the same problem with just comparing myself to others. i am getting better! it doesnt help that the school i go to is uber-competitive and everyone acts like if you don't do such and such then you suck. lol anyway, i know what is best for ME and i think med-surg is where i'm headed.

i have a job interview with the va next week...and am asking for the medical oncology floor. wish me luck!!!!:monkeydance:
