Here is a question I have been pondering. Is someone who has their license as a LPN/LVN considered to be a real nurse? How do most Helthcare professionals view LPN/LVN? When I get my LVN license will I be a nurse?
I know it says nurse in the title... licensed vocational nurse..... but are you considered by your colleagues to be a nurse? Does hospital administration consider the LPN/LVN to be a nurse? When you go out in public and someone asks what you are, do you say your're a nurse? Or do you say your an LPN/LVN?

I'm attending school right now where they have a LVN program and I am so excited about it. Everyone in my class is striving to get into the program next year. But I keep hearing my mother say about someone else..... "Oh shes just a PRACTICAL nurse." As if the job the woman was doing wasn't important.

LPN's are real nurses! I am a former LPN (17 years) who decided to return to school for my RN, for some educational stimulation.
My feeling is that seasoned LPN's can run circles around many RN's. It always annoyed me when family members would say after speaking with me about an issue and finding out later that I was an LPN, "Oh, I thought you were an RN?". They thought that they were issuing a compliment.
In my opinion, my LPN based knowledge is what has made me the great :) RN I am today. I would not trade my seventeen years as an LPN for anything! Stay proud all LPN's, you are a Real Nurse.

Some compliment. I'd be thinking in my head (always dreamed about saying it out loud):
"As if you're such an authority/expert on the nursing profession that you could tell whether I was an RN or LPN by watching me take care of your mother.
Let me guess, if I did a really good job, I must be an RN.
i was an lpn for a year as i was completing my rn and yes, lpns are "real
nurses". i worked just as hard and had just as many responsibilities as lpn as i do now as rn. plus , some of the best nurses i have worked with have been lpns. i am grateful for the experience as a lpn . i also hope that this doesn't start off another rn vs lpn thread. we need to work together for the respect that we all deserve.
This topic my husband and I go around and around on. When he is mind he tells me Im NOT a nurse I am practically a nurse.. ( i think its a jealousy issue) and perhaps with others its a jealousy issue especially those who are not anyform of a nurse. I have never heard a RN who was a formerly an LPN say Lpn are not nurses. I have been an LPN for 4yrs. In my job I work for a state faclity in a group home. When I passed a position was created and offered to me in my home. I now oversee 9 ladies with all their medical needs. When it is out of the realm, knowledge, experience of ablitlities I contact the RN who oversees houses in her quadrant and WE tackle the issue together. If I dont know she encourages me to come along to learn, and if not to encourage me more to go back to school. I know my ladies inside and out. I know when one complains of backache its a UTI, When one c/o ringing in her ears 99% of the time she is going to have a seizure real soon. When the auditors come the RN turns to me when questions are asked for information, needed papers, when evaluations are due I contact the Rn (out of the scope of my liscense) When anthing is documented it is written nurse notified and my name is applied. When I am notified I pass it on to my RN. I think you as the LPN have to think of yourself as a Nurse and no longer a CNA, or direct aid whatever your former title is... Hey im from the uk and not too familiar with what LPNs are we have nursing auxillaries who do basic tasks such as washes and toiletting amongst other vital jobs. Is this the same thing? I would say anyone in our line of work is a nurse but the difference is im a qualified nurse. I spent years of training to gain vital knowledge as people lives are in our hands not the auxillary nurses
L.P.N.'S ARE REAL NURSES. I'VE BEEN ONE FOR THE LAST 25 YEARS!!!!!!! I HAVE WORKED WITH ALOT OF R.N.'S THAT SAY OH THEY NEVER SHOWED US THIS IN SCHOOL OR HOW DID YOU LEARN TO DO THAT. I HAVE WORKED AT SMALL HOSPITALS AND THEY DON'T HAVE THE TEAMS THE BIGGER HOSPITALS DO. IF YOU WORK IN THE COUNTRY YOU ARE CLOSE WITH THE R.N.'S AND THE AIDES ARE YOUR BEST FRIENDS . SO TO SAY YOUR JUST AN L.P.N. IS WRONG WE ARE ALOT OF THE BACK BONE IN THE MEDICAL FIELD THE EYES AND EARS OF THE PATIENT TO THE DR. AND IF YOU HAVE A GOOD AIDE THEY ARE THE NURSES EYES AND EARS SO YES L.P.N.'S ARE REAL NURSES. WE WORK THE CODES , DRAW THE BLOOD , EVEN DELIVER BABIES WHEN THEY COME TO SOON. SO THAT SHOULD DO IT. Of Course you are. On my unit at a world famous clinic RN's and LPN's had the same duties (but not the same pay) Occasionally I had a patient ask me when I was going to become a REAL NURSE. I set them straight quickly! We are still a vital part of nursing.:)
LPNs are real nurses, but I always tell people interested in nursing to go ahead and become an RN. If there smart enough to be a LPN they might as well go for RN
