In the DFW area of Texas, LVN's were utilized on medsurg but less so in specialties. The rules vary hospital to hospital. Some hospitals in the area were regulating LPN practice heavily, requiring the RN to do a lot of their work ie asessments, IV's, etc. My friend who is an LVN there felt almost 'run off' by the RN's at one place she worked; where the RN's were spread too thin. Some places are better than others rulewise, and staff adequately so the RN's don't feel overburdened.

LVN's are standard shift supervisors in LTC and assisted living centers in DFW.

You are a lifesaver. Thank you very much. Is the A&P final really taken from questions from the tests and pre-tests? I am under the impression that the questions are only taken from the multiple choice questions. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

How many hours of study did you have a night when you were in school proper?

How soon after the course starts do you start clinicals in the hospital?

Cheers,

Jeff

Yes, the instructor does use the Pretests & Tests, but there were lots of questions not on the originals. That's why so many flunked first time because they relied on the printouts from their tests. Do the A&P study guide questions & they'll help too.

Usually do 3-4 hours study, when I only do 2 hrs, my scores drop.

I think we started clinicals in September.

Did you see the article by Rich Brooks in the Saturday Sarasota Herald Tribune? He's a columnist with Lou Gehrig's disease, came to our class & had a great Q&A session with him. Quoted quite a few of my classmates in the article. Good plug for SCTI PN program.

Good luck!

Although I am just starting my program in August, members of my family who are working in hospitals (RN's included) tell me that the large hospitals in our area have a hiring freeze on LPN's... from what I understand this is something that they do once about every 7-10 years, they will 'weed out' their LPN's and not hire them for a while... very depressing. I hope that by the time I graduate I will get a job in something other than LTC.... :crying2:

What LPN program are you in, or were you in?

I'm starting at SCTI August 8th. I'm doing the online courses right now to get them out of the way.

I that school Located in New Jersey and if so are you located thier as well???

No, I am attending VTC in Vermont starting in late August. I would be interested in knowing if Southern Vermont hospitals are doing the same thing-- I can only speak for Northern Vermont (FAHC, etc).

Well LPNs are usually employed most in the long term care facilities vs. hospitals. I really don't see the difference in an LPN and RN other than education. Maybe hospitals just prefer the more advanced in training and education....

No, used to be an all RN facility. They recently started hiring LPNs.
