After this weekend's terrible act of violence against our community in Orlando Fl, it would be nice to open a dialogue for support and discussion. Feeling a little fragile today for the loss of our brothers and sisters and surprised to see no reference to it on this board today.
I'm not gay, but I'm human. This was a crime against humanity. My heart is broken, and my heart goes out to the gay community, and all the families of the dead and injured.
I agree with emergent. It was a horrific orchestrated tragedy. One of my dear friends, who happens to be gay, posted this over on Facebook and I thought it was truly profound ....
"June 24th,1973: 32 members of the LGBT community died during a arson attack on the Upstairs Lounge in New Orleans. One of the biggest problems after the attack was getting embarrassed families to step forward and claim bodies of the deceased.
June 12th, 2016: Mothers ran to a gay bar in hopes of saving their little babies lives while fathers told reporters how proud their sons make them.
Be it small, we have made progress"
I'm bisexual, and this is how I'm feeling, too. It's a little touchy, because I don't want it to turn it into All About Me, and that's how just randomly coming out would feel to me. But I feel like the emerging details that the attacker himself may have been gay emphasize the need for visibility and acceptance.I just want to do something. I'm not sure what. I live in an area with, as far as I can tell, no organized LGBT presence.
Give blood.
Also, the FDA has finally lifted the lifetime ban on gay males donating blood.
All of the victims have been identified, and Yahoo has a small vignette of them. I cried reading through them.
Wow, this man sounds disturbed and conflicted. It seems he was from a traditional upbringing, had homosexual leanings that were repressed. He also had anger issues, and a mood disorder, it sounds like.I really think this is not a terrorist incident. This man was also feeding into rhetoric from Islamic extremism, but the core issue sounds more psychological.
They're also saying now his wife might be arrested because of her actions(or inaction) Apparently she tried to talk him out of, was with him when he bought ammo and when he was staking out other places like Disney World. If that is the case she could have stopped it by going to the police. She has the blood of over 100 people on her hands and I hope she is arrested and tried to the fullest extend of the law.
I'm also appalled at his father and ex wife who both seem to love the spotlight they are in now. I sincerely hope they are not being paid for their interviews. His father is an avowed Taliban supporter and his wife failed to report him for domestic abuse.
But if we're all nurses here, and some are gay, why can't we post here? I see many kinds of things discussed here. Surely, after this awful act of hate and segregation you won't delegate us to another board? Surely, especially today, you could let us talk among ourselves? How is the Stanford Rape about nurses?
I completely disagree with that post. It should not have been made about nurses.
Yes, I am a Pansexual Woman who recently graduated. I have a million friends who are gay. Matter of fact, my gay best-friend who also went to nursing school used to live in Oralando, FL and frequented the place that got shot up. It was heartbreaking for him and it broke my heart as well... He knew some of the people who died...
I am grieving...we are grieving...
We need more love and less hate. We can't fight hate with hate.

Too, too sad!

I think it is also a terrorist incident. This particular terrorist group hates lots of different groups of people: Americans, Christians, LGBTs. Kurds, Jews, women....the list goes on and on and on. Hate is hate. It is evil. I'm truly sorry this man is "disturbed", and has been psychologically suppressed, but there is NO EXCUSE for what he did. None! My heart breaks for the victims of this travesty, for their partners and parents and siblings and friends and children, and for each life he ripped away for no reason other than hate. Hate cannot win. Love wins!

An ally here. This tragic event has resonated throughout the country. Our hearts ache for the community so often effected by such senseless violence. My small town in Ohio will be holding a candle light vigil in honor of the victims on Friday.
My words can never be enough and I feel completely helpless even trying to express them.
