Are you doing fecal transplants very often?

Published

I know that they've been around for at least 10 years. Just read about their effectiveness in research lately. Sounds like they are very effective, even though icky.

I'm surprised that more people aren't super eager about this treatment. I think it's great and if it were me, I'd rather have that than flagyl.

I wonder if they could culture the right mix of stomach flora and put it in a non-poop pill you can take prophylacticly upon admission to a health care facility.

In theory, I think it's great. It's just really, really gross to think about in any detail. Really gross.

I feel so sorry for the blender. It comes out of the factory, ready to make smoothies, mixed drinks, puree soups, crush ice, all sorts of lovely things. Next thing you know, someone puts a glob of poop in it, and after that experience it gets to sit in bleach solution... I don't know how they clean it but my GOD I hope it involves a separate dishwasher, bleach and boiling water, and twice of every cycle.

I laughed for 5 minutes at this...poor blender. Thanks.

Have done the leeches..instilling a poop smoothie would be preferable to leeches again. Nothing surprises me these days. (though don't know how I would feel knowing I was full of someone elses crap in me, better that than letting leeches suck on my wounds I guess.)

In 2013, it is projected most hospitals will have a fecal unit.:p

Gonna make folks think twice about dissing med-surg or LTC, eh? Feeding people shinola just goes beyond anything civilized. Where's that poor soul who had sympathy gags for her cat's puke? :)

I also recently read about the success of fecal transplants. I think it's pretty amazing! As yucky as it is, I think most pt.s with C-diff would prefer the transplant. I feel so sorry for those patients, they are so uncomfortable, they cannot control their bowels, and the elderly develop terrible skin breakdown from it. Imagine if we can erradicate c-diff with this...How amazing would that be?

Not to mention they are all alone in isolation from it!! :(

One lucky thing about having c-diff (and likely the ONLY reason any pt accepts this) is most people would do ANYTHING to not have c-diff anymore! I suppose I would be willing to have this done, but I would also except the reglan and versed. I had only heard of this being done as an enema, and I think it it were me I would prefer a poop enema, than an NG poop meal.

So, what happened to the blender after the...um, preparation?

They had a Margarita party!

Yes ErinS I also meant to mention that. I've heard of it as given as an enema, or a series of enemas.

I guess it would depend on the severity of the case whether an enema or NG tube would be best.
