Are you a competitive Nursing Student?

Are you the type of nursing student that will do anything for an A?

Are you disappointed if you make less than a 95?

I'm curious, I heard nursing students are cut throat and aggressive....

Is this true?

I start my program in the Fall, so I just wanted to know what my classmates would be like.....

No, I am not.

I am a hard worker and my grade is all me. Whatever I get is a reflection of me. I am not worried about the next...we are in this together, but comparing percentages on exams - no. I work hard for myself and for future lives that will be in my hands :).

If there is competition in my class, I haven't seen it. For those I am closest with, we have shared grades, but only in the essence of providing support and help. We are a great class and I am glad that I have met the fellow students that I have! :D

I would love to get A's. I want to go onto a master's like the other posters. But reality is, I work full time and we have a 12 cr load this semester. 4 days a week I get up, go to work, go to school, go to bed. Fri I don't have class in the evening, but I have Techniques for the majority of Sat. Sunday is the one real day to study and I am fairly worn out. It will be a long 4 semesters! It can be hard to see that test grade of 91% and realize that it is a B.

Only time will tell! Competitive....only against myself. Right now, I simply keep my eye on the goal! :nurse:

Before I started my BSN program I was super competitive, especially with others trying to get in to the program at the same time as me. However, when you get in the program you will find all that fades and the focus becomes learning the material to the best of your ability. There is no need to compete, you will find that the people in your program can become great friends, tutors, study partners, etc. The most important thing is to help one another, I am blessed to be in a great class that does exactly that. We help one another out and that is what nursing is supposed to be. Good luck with everything!

When I had my gallbladder removed a couple years ago, a MSN came and spoke to me and told me that a "C" is still passing. That hospitals don't really look at your grades w/ a fine tooth comb.

Sure, a C is still passing, but it's not going to get me into a competitive graduate program either.

The only person I am out to please is myself. I shoot as high as I can. I WANT that A but I am happy with what I earn as long as I pass my classes. My grades a direct reflection of how hard I work. I am one who is happy for those who work hard and do well but will be the first to admit that it burns me when slackers and cheaters do better than I do! My classmates are not my competition, though many see it that way. They are my friends, practically my family. I spend more time with some of them than I do my own family and my boyfriend. I want to see them do well, too.

I am a bit competitive, which is funny because I never cared much about my grades in the past. It is a standard I have set for myself since I started back to school. I strive for A's, and am disappointed if I get a low A sometimes (depending on the class or test). My boyfriend calls me an overachieving nerd (lovingly, of course!). I am not really competitive with other students, but I am always one of the top students in my classes.

HOWEVER, I will be taking med surg I and pharmacology in the fall, and I am intimidated. Of course I will still strive for A's, but realistically, I know I will probably have to be happy with B's. Like some of the others here, I want to leave grad school open as an option, so I really want to do my best. Not to mention that it's in my future patients' best interest for me to do as well as I can.

Im not competitive, but I am my own worst enemy. I work hard for my grades, study alot, and I am bummed if I get less than a 95%. I have high expectations of myself; there is nothing wrong with that. I have no children & no job, so I dont have an excuse to do poorly. I do help other students, more so only if they ask nowdays. I make detailed study guides and I used to send them to everyone, but when people started expecting me to, thats when I stopped. Now that Im down to the last 9 months of school, I am doing things to make myself for marketable when we graduate. That's when I'll be in competition with some of my classmates.

I wish I could be that person that was happy with a B. Oh well

I am not competitive against other students…but I am competitive against myself. I have maintained a 4.0 nursing GPA (3.9 overall) and I strive for an A on every exam. I am not happy with the score unless it is a 100%. I plan on going further than ADN so grades matter.

To those who say that grades don’t matter when you get your first job. Nursing jobs in many areas are harder to come by these days. Hospitals are getting hundreds of resumes for every open position and they will spend on average of 30 seconds (according to a business communication class I just completed) looking at your resume to decide if you will get an interview or not. Being able to put on your resume that you graduated with a 4.0 GPA could make the difference between getting an interview and having your resume tossed to the side.

I'm learning to be an A student (used to be content to jus tget by, but I four pointed the last year). I'm competetive, but I don't lose much sleep if I get less than a ninty-five, and I don't see my classmates as competition. I see no reason why we ALL can't do well.

As many have said, I'm only competitive against myself too. For me, having a 4.0 is personal validation b/c I dropped out of high school, took a GED, and have been forever labeled b/c of it. I don't compete against others EVER. I actually hate that mentality (my sister has it). I always want that A b/c I know I am capable, but I keep in mind that C's get Degrees.

I AGREE WITH YOU ALL!

The biggest competition

is yourself.

I feel the same way

about B's.. but I heard the grading

scales are different though.. 92, 91, 90s

are Bs..
