APU ELM Spring 2015

Published

So the deadline for Azusa Pacific's ELM program is just a couple days away! :nailbiting:

Any other fellow applicants out there? I was wondering if the March 1st deadline is strictly for a Spring 2015 start date, or if there's any possibility of an earlier start? January of next year just seems soooo far away.

I am worried! I haven't gotten a call for an interview yet. When did those of you who did, submit your application?

Shanny, did you answer with a religious affiliation on your application? I'm wondering if that affects whether or not they ask you. I put that I was non-denominational. I looked on the statistics much later and realized a whopping majority of people just opted not to answer the question. I'm wondering if I should've skipped it also.

I turned my application in right when it opened. I heard the longer u wait to turn in your application the longer it takes to get to it. I put I was Christian, the only religious question I was asked was if I was involved with any thing with a church. I do first aid and meal train for my church. But that question was only to see if u get an extra point on the scoring sheet.

Hi everyone,

Out of curiosity, did you walk out of the interview having a sense of how your strong your chances are? I heard that they are very open regarding your application so they would tell you if you have a good chance of acceptance or not?

And would it be advisable to ask "what are my chances?" question at the very end or is that too blunt/rude etc? I want to be able to get a sense of what's coming so I can mentally prepare myself if the worst does happen. :( (I hope not!!)

Did they ask any questions regarding the specialization your are interested in (since I know you have to mark one area of speciliazation on the ELM form)?????

And they did ask and go over your essay prompts as well? In depth perhaps?

Sorry for the multiple questions, guys. I'm so nervous that my head might fall off. Please help, thank you. :p

Those are great questions, I'd very much like to know as well.

Hi Tina,

I did my interview last Friday. They way they determine if you are a good candidate for their program it goes by a points system and the interview. During the pre-addmission/interview the interviewer will add up your GPA, and all other points together so you know EXACTLY where you stand. He said they do not consider anybody with less than 30 points total. After adding up all my points he told me I had a 90% chance of being accepted into the program but they still had to meet in April to make the final determination.

One of the questions he asked me was "Why do you want to be a nurse, besides wanting to help people?" For the essay question i was asked what professional goals in nursing I had. But during the interview he didn't ask me what specialty I wanted to go into.

After I took the essay questions he read it and scored it right in front of me (that goes towards your overal points). It's out of 5 points. So after leaving the interview I knew exactly how many points I had and where I stood.

I hope that answers all of your questions :). It was very relaxing and not high stress at all. But that didn't mean i wasn't CRAZY nervous!

Dear Shanny1185:

Thank you soooo much for sharing your experiences! I'm so scared to score low then, would you happen to know if that point system is available anywhere so we "can score ourselves" to see where we stand, or we would probably have to wait for them to calculate everything for us? Or do you happen to know which areas they score on exactly?

I'm very nervous because in all the areas they score on (like interview, GPA, pre reqs, experience etc), I do have one area of weakness but I'm okay in everything else. So I'm not sure if this one area will ruin my chances. :(

By "not considering anyone with lower than 30 points", so I'm assuming if in the case you score exactly 30, is that like a 50/50 chance of admittance kind of thing?

Judging by your experience, it sounds like the interview was more going over your application and not much of asking you questions at all (other like two or three questions perhaps)? Also, how long was your interview (minus the probably 20-30 minutes of writing the prompt)? :)

I'm very glad that all went well for you, congratulations. :)

Hi Tina,

Ok...So i'm going to try and go off memory so here it goes...

Scince and non-science pre-req GPA:3.5-4.0=15PTS 3.49-3.0=10PTS.

Total GPA 3.5-4.0=10 PTS, 3.49-3.0=5pts.

If your degree is in Biology 2 pts

working in the medical field, military service, involved in church, involved in an organization, special circumstances 1 pt

Interview 10 pts

Written 5 pts

I think it was a total of either 50 or 55 pts.

I'm not sure if that is everything, but I hope that helps. The interview/pre-advising session was about an hour not including the written. I didn't have a time limit for my written. I heard they interview about 50 applicants and they only accept 20.

Dear shanny1185:

Oh wow, it's incredible you remembered all that! Thank you so much for the break down, it absolutely helped a lot! Oh I guess if the total is 50 or 55, there must be a few more areas they score points on (like maybe personal statement or experience?).

Also, I am currently finishing up my last two pre reqs so by the time I meet with them, my grades for this class won't be factored in. So would you (or anyone else on this forum) know how this would work out? Or will it negatively impact ?

Maybe everyone's written is slightly different because I was recently informed that my written is going to take about 20 minutes or so.

SHanny1185, I want to thank you for sharing your experiences with me, your thoughts really helped calm me down before my own interview. So thank you, I appreciate it very much! :)

Tina N.

I think its out of 55 but i can't be exactly sure. I had all of my classes done, so i don't know exactly how that would work. No problem :) I'm glad I could help. I know how it feels going into an interview you don't know much about. Good luck, I'm sure you'll do GREAT!

Shanny1185: Thank you once again for helping out us fellow aspiring students. We really do appreciate your time and effort. :)

Thank you for the encouragement, I hope to follow you guys into the program too! *crosses fingers*

Again, congrats to you and hopefully see you in the future! :)

Hey guys thanks for the information! I'm a fellow applicant who is now nervous about my advising appointment. I have just calculated that I have a 2.99 science prereq gpa depending on what courses they decide to count. So just to clarify they award points for both your science prereq gpa and your non science prereq gpa (30 points total)? Thank you and good luck to everyone I hope we all get in as well

pursue,

Yes your science GPA and pre-req. non science GPA is worth a max of 30 points, and your overal GPA is worth a max of 10 pts.
