APU ELM MSN Spring 2021

Updated:   Published

Hello,

just starting a forum thread so all applicants or future applicants can communicate with each other regarding the application.

I have applied to Azusa Pacific ELM program for Spring 2021 at the Inland Empire. I have not gotten an interview yet but hopefully soon, fingers crossed. Anyone gotten a response yet?

Rejected for the SD campus.

Stats: 3.4 cum (UC Berkeley, Psych Major) I have a strong upward trend and everything I've taken in the last several years has been A's, 1 or 2 B's. I went out of my way to keep taking advanced coursework in biochem, endocrinology, pharmacology. Pre-req was 3.9 or 4.0 I believe.

Experience: ~200 hours as a hospital volunteer. Earned my CNA cert and worked 8 months as a CNA. Roughly 1 year as an ER scribe. Then worked as a Clinical Research Coordinator in spine/neurosurgery for another 6 months.

I drove ~4 hours to interview and 4 hours back. I really felt great about the interview and had lots to talk about given my experience and personal/academic growth.

I'm heartbroken and at this point unsure of what to do. I've worked so hard and just want an opportunity and I've been rejected from another program. Others I don't even know if they will be continuing, given COVID and what not. I wonder if they thought I was overqualified and would not be attending, even if admitted. I'm so desperate for some good news right now... this is crushing.

I know it could be disappointing. Please don’t give up! Your stats are really good. I also have research coordinator experience. What are you currently doing for work?

I was accepted to the SD campus, so I don't know if it makes a difference in terms of stats. My stats definitely show that they do not only focus on GPA. My overall GPA is a 3.68, but that is combined with my first years at community college where I had personal stuff going on. I did graduate with an SDSU uperdivision GPA of 3.9 and honors in my major. My science GPA is 3.69. I have over 200 hours volunteering in the perinatal unit of Sharp Mary Birch and had my lead nurse write me a letter of rec. I do have to say that I am pretty good at writing, so I think my personal letter I wrote and the summary I did probably benefited me. I was also raised a Christian and, I don't know if anyone else was asked, but my interviewer asked if I had any volunteer experience in a church setting, so I luckily had quite a bit. All of this is speculation though. One last thing, during my interview, what I originally thought was a detriment might have helped me was when she asked if I had any caregiving experience for family or friends. My grandpa, whom I helped caregive for, passed away just two months prior and I started bawling while telling her my experience with him. Honestly, I do not think I will ever know why exactly they chose me over others, but for those that did not get accepted, do not give up hope! This was one of the only schools I got accepted at because of my lower GPA.

Hi I was accepted to the Spring 2021 SD campus as well! Do you know if there is a facebook page started or anything to connect with the cohort?

@mkers20

Hi CONGRATS to you! I do not know if there is one started, but I would be excited to join! I do not go on facebook much anymore, but would definitely join for the cohort.

Hi I was accepted as well! Based on the ELM evaluation sheet, my science GPA is 3.93 and my Non-Science GPA is 3.73. I have prior volunteer experience but completed that years ago. For my personal statement, I had several friends who I know are decent writers, read over my paper several times. I looked at previous forums of questions that could've been asked and practiced by recording myself and listening back to my responses. I have applied to other nursing programs such as USD, National, and CSUSM and was denied. I did retake some science prereqs to receive A's in them. When I was interviewed I was asked why I retook classes, and I was very honest about not taking school seriously before. I also spoke about my faith and how it has been a big part of my upbringing. I believe they want to know you have a genuine interest in being a nurse and are mature and willing to drop anything to be successful in the program. I have almost given up many times. It took me many years to get to this point. Whatever you do, give it your all.

@victoriarnstudent

Congratulations!! Which campus?

@lalurker Don't give up! Especially if becoming a nurse is what you're passionate about. TBH, nobody knows how applicants are truly assessed. I suppose it is reviewed pretty holistically. Being denied doesn't mean you're not deserving! Keep trying. I went into this process with imposter syndrome. I didn't even think I'd get interviews but I got 3 for the 3 ELM's I applied to (accepted by CBU but rescinded, rejected by WesternU, now waiting for APU and USF). Good luck going forward. We can all do this.

Fingers crossed! Maybe by tomorrow...

Congratulations everyone who was accepted! I applied fo IE too but I didn’t even interview so I’m assuming that means I’ll be reapplying. Did everyone who applied at IE interview?

@MLmsn

I got interviewed. ?

Hello everyone!

Just wanted to chime in, I was accepted for Fall 2021 (SD) but I applied for Spring 2021. I do not have a facebook account, but if anyone is planning to start a group page, I'd like to know. THANK YOU!

For those that got denied, don't lose hope. I got denied prior to this - I applied last year for the Spring 2020 cohort and at that time, I didn't have BioChemistry completed. So I went back and completed it and then reapplied. You can also email your interviewer and ask for recommendations on how to improve your application. Do not take no for answer, if this is truly what you want, go after it. You WILL get in. Best wishes to you all!
