Applying for substitute school nurse job

I'm applying for a substitute school nurse position. I currently work two 12 hr night shifts a week at my new, more laid back ER job, and want to let go of my Per Diem ER position at the corporate hospital where I used to work full-time.

What's your advise for the interview? What are expectations/duties of substitute school nurses?

Know the school, know the population of kids.

You are an RN with 22 years experience, including ED! Your resume will speak for itself. They will be crazy not to snap you up. You will have to be fingerprinted.

I would go to your state Ed. website and look over some of the protocols for nurses.

Concussion knowledge. Special Ed.

Best of luck!!! Yay!!!

I sent résumé and letter via email. I saw the job advertised on Craigslist. She called me right away. It's a small town school district, 4 elementary, 1 middle, and 1 high school.

They actually have me on file already because I was a camp nurse for their 5th grade camp years ago.

It might be a perfect supplement to my part time job. My Per Diem job is turning into a PITA, with password resets, password difficulty, management instability. The latest is a new payroll system, and inability to view my pay stub online because of password problems. Not to mention the fact that they pile on the meaningless continuing ed with a cumbersome online program that also has password glitches.

Specializes in School nursing.

My first subbing gig was right out of nursing school - I had a connection through my husband and that connection said such nice things about me that the nurse leader just hired me. (That nurse leader - a public health nurse for the town/school district - and I still keep in touch.) You have so much experience that they would be crazy not have you!

When I subbed, I jumped right into a large school setting; so big that there were two nurses (one school with 1300 kids, another with 1600) and one in particular took her under her wing. I ended up being a long term sub for her partner nurse while that nurse was on an extended medical leave and it was that time and relationship that helped me fall in love with school nursing.

Like Far mentioned: concussions, sped, but also what you would do with a frequent flier/student who isn't physically sick but keeps visiting.

Be careful though. You join our dark side and you may never come back...

I'm currently a sub, and I wasn't interviewed either. I just applied, got fingerprinted, and suddenly was given access to all substitute opportunities in the entire district (including ALL classes for every blasted school in the district - not that I'm volunteering to teach high school advanced chem, but I could if I wanted to...)

The hardest part of subbing (for me) is not knowing the kids. OP, will you be rotating through the different schools?
