Applying for Duke ABSN fall 2016

Published

Hello, I am applying to Duke's ABSN program for the fall of 2016 and am wanting to chat with anyone else who is in the same boat! I'm wondering how hard it will be to get in based on GPA, prereqs etc.

Are there any current Duke students who would be wiling to share what their profile looked like before they got in? If they were wait-listed and got in?

Any information would help!

I attended the webinar and I am also really freaked out by the financial aspect of it. If I get accepted I am really worried about working that part out.

yea if you factor in all living expenses, it comes about to be $80,000 for the whole program

I didn't attend that webinar but 80,000 is still a lot cheaper than some of the other programs I am looking at (one would put me 130,000 in debt, yikes!). I had hoped that they would get the decisions back to us sooner since they asked for the applications so early! I know this is the school I want, but I don't want to deny other programs in case I don't get in!

Hello! I applied to Duke's ABSN Fall 2016 cohort.

I'm surprised this thread hasn't had many people join the conversation. Maybe there isn't a huge pool of applicants?

Any applicants with certifications or experience as CNA?

I don't know how many, I always thought it was a couple hundred for every pool they have. I know the online info sessions tended to max out, or at least the ones I logged on for did. As for CNA, I have mine in 2 states (NC and NY) but since I'm still doing undergrad I didn't have time to work off campus as a second job!

I applied too, but I jst have hospital and homehealth voluntary experience..aint got a CNA cettificate or any other...what's your plan about financial aid incase you are admitted? Their tuition is scary, but I really love duke

I think I read Duke's ABSN program has about a 40% acceptance rate with 600+ applications. Not sure how that math works.

My plan is to apply to every scholarship I find including HRSA.

If that doesn't work, then apply to hospitals after graduation that offer tuition reimbursement. As far as I know the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program is also available to nurses who work in "public service" positions for 10 years.

Are there "cheaper" ABSN programs? The ones I've looked into are all about $60k+ in tuition.

But I also have to pay out of state tuition in most cases.

I'm in WA now and there are basically only 2 BSN programs (UW and WSU) to choose from.

No CNA certification for me, I'm actually coming out of a law school and graduate political science background. But then, many Duke applicants don't have previous health experience and have worked in other fields.

They state that they usually get 750-800 applications/year and accept 70-75/cohort, so that approximates to 375 applications/cycle with a 19-20% acceptance rate. Of course, that doesn't include students taken off the wait list, which I think is usually a lot because many applicants get sticker shock.

The price of Duke is expensive, but I think it's worth it, and you never know what financial aid you'll be eligible for until you apply - plus, Duke hospital does have a reimbursement plan of some sort for previous students. I also really want to go there for their early-admissions MA program and research opportunities.

I don't know about cheaper ABSN programs, either. The only (much) cheaper option for NC residents is UNC, which actually tends to make their program more competitive than Duke's. I'm planning to apply there as a backup if I don't get into Duke this go-round, but I got my undergrad from UNC, so I'd like to go somewhere different. I'm tied to the Triangle area for the near future (moved back last year), and there aren't many options.

Good luck everyone!! :)

I live in LA California and so, very much wanna come back after studying(that is if I'm admitted..lol)

I also applied to UCLA MECN, but not too sure if I will make it because I have 4 prerequisites in progress.

Even for Duke , I have 3 prerequisites in progress(Nora told me to re-do physiology and statistics)

So my stand is kinda shaky.....

I really hope to get in.

I also heard that for the ABSN, there is no campus accommodation.

Hi amzytubies!

You're right, there is no campus accommodation for the ABSN - Duke doesn't generally offer housing for any of their graduate students. Durham is pretty affordable, though, and they have a reliable busing system if transportation is a concern.

Good luck with the prereqs! I'm finishing up 2 now, and only have Micro left to take next semester. Definitely ready to be done with them!

Good luck my dear. About the bus system, I came to Durham during the summer, also came to duke to survery; through out the 1 week I stayed there, I never saw any bus of any kind... unlike in Cali where you see buses every min.

It won't be like in California, no, but I did use the busing system in Durham when I was an undergrad at UNC. Chapel Hill has got a great (and free) busing system, but Durham's is reliable enough if people need it.

I miss European public transport - my husband and I relocated from England last year, and the ease of traveling by bus or train is definitely one thing I miss a lot.
