2023 Applications to UBC and UVic NP program

Updated:   Published

Hi all,

I've applied to both programs to start in September 2023, and wanting to commiserate with anyone else who is anxiously waiting to hear. Looking back at previous years I'm feeling a bit discouraged since the admissions average seemed to be higher than I had been told by colleagues. Anyhow, let me know if you also applied and when you hear back from schools! Wishing you all the best of luck.

I think all the programs are bit disorganized from what I've heard, though I think this program will be a bit more so. I think I'll apply as a back up but probably not unless my other options don't pan out! I'm not excited about having to do another totally different personal statement and ask my references for a third reference... Maybe we will hear about other programs before mid march so it won't be an issue!?

Sounds like (at least in the past), Feb and March are when people start to hear back, TRU you need to accept by mid April, so should be lots of wiggle room.

Does anyone know how many people applied to  UVIC, ubc, and UNBC ?

I think I came across stats on one of their websites and last year was like 188? But every year for the past 3 or 4 have been almost doubling with applications...I don't have the highest hopes. I thought I was a better fit for UBC anyways, and I imagine UVIC would prefer students that live (and thus may end up working) on the Island.

TRU is definitely crazy last minute, I can't believe they are still going for it (though I'm happy they are haha). I am glad that they said they would have the students "transfer" temporarily into the MSN if the NP doesn't get accredited. I do feel like it is reassuring to have that automatic (?) fallback; though of course if I can't get into any of the NP programs I would go for my MSN anyways, so it's not that big of a risk for me.

Are folks planning on listening in on Friday again? I know it should be all the same but it does seem to change quick.

Thank you for this information. What time is the TRU presentation on Friday?

I want to apply to TRU, however I also feel terrible to ask my references again. I did email UBC to ask about their approximate time line with interviews/acceptances/declines and I have not heard anything back. If I find out more info I will update!

It's tomorrow at noon! Thanks for asking UBC- I agree it's awkward to ask again ?. Let me know if you need the link to the info session!

Do these schools tend to select those that will remain in the surrounding region? Ie: UVIC: the island, UNBC: the north?

the numbers of applicants has definitely gone up over the years, have been told by a few to expect on average about 3 years to get into NP Program - how accurate that is, I don't know. Other masters programs are easier to get into (more seats and more options for universities).
Food for thought. I will hopefully have all the yay/nay's by April for all the schools, then can make a plan from there.

So happy to have found this thread! I applied to UVic NP Program only- all my eggs in one basket, so biting my nails with fingers, toes, and eyes crossed!

After reading this thread, I will limit my application status checks and accept I probably won't hear anything until March. Feels so close and so far away.

I'd like to know what I'll be doing in September... not that I don't like my current job, I really do, but being an NP is my b-hag (big, hairy, audacious goal).

For anyone who hasn't done it yet, I completed the Athabasca Soci 301 stats course. It is a well laid out course with very manageable material, assignments and tests. So much better than the stats course I did (many) years ago...

One idea re: the cost of the course is to apply for grants with your employer and/or BCNU.

Good luck to everyone biting their nails, crossing all their fingers, toes and eyes like I am ?

Oh, where did you hear 3 years? I didn't think they looked favourably on re-applicants, but I guess I assumed that because of UVIC saying you needed to write a letter addressing how you've improved since the last time you applied. I wish we could at least get feedback from rejections, it's hard to know what to actually improve.

Also I should say it's just my assumption that their preference would be for more local students, as most in healthcare want to retain anyone they can LOL. I doubt it's heavily weighed by any means. For UVIC I just also didn't feel as connected with their prompts as I did UBC, so I am not expecting to hear back from them after not even being invited to interview with UBC.

I only applied to UNBC. I sort of wanted to test the waters and see what the application cycle is like.  I am curious about how the programs weight things (grades, references, experience etc), especially ones that don't do interviews.  The TRU option could be interesting, but seems rushed.

It does sound like this year is rushed, lots of grey areas, but also I think they just want to get it off the ground. Kamloops isn't very big but has over 40,000 people without a PCP apparently.
In the info session they did say they were prioritizing locals, but it will be interesting to see how many apply given the short notice.

Has anybody heard back from UNBC yet this application cycle? Anybody know if they're doing interviews this year?

I haven't heard anything back.  Other than an email months ago saying everything was received and under review.

It's felt like an eternity since applying in November- it's really too bad they don't give us an estimated timeline. I'd really love to plan my life! Anyone else out there applying with young kids? I don't know if I'm totally insane for wanting to do this at this stage of life, but I've been wanting to apply for years and I decided to just go for it! Every time my phone rings I jump hoping I'll hear something about an interview from UBC.

It sounds like UNBC and UVic dropped interviews last year. It's interesting that it's not clear anymore what they're doing! Hopefully we hear something this week, given it's the end of February and start of March!
