Applicants to Portland/Salem Area Nursing Schools 2014

Published

I know that it's early, but I really wanted to get a jump on this. I have read the past two years' threads from start to finish and have seen the amazing support given by everyone involved. Considering how competitive it is for nursing school admission, it is extremely informative and heart-warming. I will be applying to all the schools in the Portland/Salem area to which I will qualify. This next year is going to be rough, but ever since I started on this journey I have loved every moment.

A little about me:

  • I am 33, married, no kids.
  • I live in Salem and have taken the bulk of my prerequisites at Chemeketa.
  • I have been working as a Dental Assistant for 2 years and feel that it is supremely unfair that many of the OCNE schools do not count dental assisting towards their "direct patient care" discretionary points. (I went to school for a year to become a dental assistant. I have dealt with medical emergencies, bodily fluids and have had my fingers in mouths on a daily basis! I'm grumbling, I know.)
  • I have a 4.0 GPA (so far) for all of the OCNE prerequisites (My single B in one of three Chemistry classes will haunt me when I apply to Linfield)
  • I am still one term away from finishing my prerequisites for the majority of the schools to which I plan on applying
  • I don't really think that I will be lucky enough to be accepted to any of the Portland-area community colleges due to my lack of necessary discretionary points (if any of you CURRENT students have found otherwise, I would be very interested to find out what you know!)
  • I will be applying anyway, because I know that I should at least make it onto a waiting list or two and as I have seen in previous threads - they do go through their waiting lists!
  • I sincerely hope that all my hard work will pay off and that I will be accepted SOMEWHERE

Again, I know this is early, but I look forward to seeing the responses from everyone!

Wow, Born4This, what an earful, right?! So are you saying they said they only sent out around 10 emails to alternates that made it on the waitlist that were invited to the orientation, meaning you are one of the ten people and should be receiving an email soon?

I know, huh? It was quite a long phone call...I didn't mind though. I really just wanted to make sure I understood what he was saying. So from what I understand, yes, they sent the email with an orientation invite to 10 of the waitlisted applicants - everyone else (It sounded like there may be more than 40 on the waitlist - not 100% sure on this point though) got the email about being waitlisted, but, without the orientation invite.

That said, I am one of the waitlisted applicants that was invited to the orientation, and, he said that if I don't hear something next week about a spot, I may hear something at the orientation. But, that since I got invited to the orientation, it is higher than likely that I will get an email offering me a spot at some point.

Sweet! I was offered an orientation email too! Hope this means I may have a shot too! I'll be at the orientation on the 4th! Hope to hear something soon in an email. Thanks again for all of your hard work and clarification=)

That's awesome @pogues60! Did you apply anywhere else? I know you mentioned PCC - are you waitlisted there too? I thought I saw somewhere that you got accepted to another program. I am waiting to hear from PCC - like you said though, after orientation on the 18th. I won't be there though...I'll be vacationing out of the country. Thank goodness the program director said she understands and that I just need to call and/or email when I get back to set up a time to go over everything.

We should totally meet up to go to the orientation together!

@Born4This I did get excepted to PCC, but I really want CCC. I am still very grateful that I got into a program this Fall regardless. I will keep in touch with you as orientation gets closer. Hopefully we will find out something before then.

To the CCC hopefuls and CCC accepted there is a CCC thread on here and I am thinking about making a fb page too which will definitely come in handy after the orientation when we have a big ol list of things to do.

@alewis513 - I saw the thread you're talking about, but, didn't think I should post on there since I'm not accepted and just on the waitlist. If you don't mind us waitlisters posting, I'll totally check in and post there too :-)

Congrats @Pogues60! So cool to know you're going to nursing school no matter what. We could be classmates potentially at PCC or CCC. I hope we both get our wish and get accepted at CCC!

I just got an e-mail from Allied. They said only go to the orientation if instructed to do so in your status e-mail. : /

I just got an email saying the same thing. I'm looking at all this waiting as a lesson on patience...it's not easy though!

Hi all that are wondering about CCC. I think things are moving on the wait list. I got an email 2 days ago saying I was accepted. I had planned on going to MHCC since I was waitlisted at CCC but decided to hold out on asking them to take me off the wait list. When I found out I eagerly accepted CCC admission and let MHCC know. I had the same feeling as all of the CCC hopefuls seem to share about the staff and program. They made such a great impression at the interview and were warm and friendly and seemed to possess the qualities that great educators all have. Plus it will be nice to start in Fall rather than Winter. I hope others start to hear the same good news soon. Good luck to everyone.

@BRW85 - congratulations! That's so awesome that you got an email offering you a spot :-) I am SO JEALOUS! Did you get the waitlist email inviting you to orientation? I did, and I spoke with the admin assistant yesterday and he sounded pretty positive about my chances of getting an email offering me a spot (he didn't say when, but he said that since I was invited to orientation, there's a good chance I'll get an offer at some point).

Did you get your email on Monday or Tuesday? It sounds like you were at the top of the waitlist...you must've gottenyour email following the accept/decline deadline last Friday.

Born4This- Yes, I got the initial email that said to go to the orientation. I think I got my acceptance email on Tuesday. I really hope you get the same news soon. I know it is torture waiting but think about this- It is so soon after all the schools sent out notifications and so much can change in people's lives in a matter of months even weeks. More people will likely adjust their plans. I think you stand a great chance! Good luck!!! So crazy this is all really happening!
