Applicants to Portland/Salem Area Nursing Schools 2014

Published

I know that it's early, but I really wanted to get a jump on this. I have read the past two years' threads from start to finish and have seen the amazing support given by everyone involved. Considering how competitive it is for nursing school admission, it is extremely informative and heart-warming. I will be applying to all the schools in the Portland/Salem area to which I will qualify. This next year is going to be rough, but ever since I started on this journey I have loved every moment.

A little about me:

  • I am 33, married, no kids.
  • I live in Salem and have taken the bulk of my prerequisites at Chemeketa.
  • I have been working as a Dental Assistant for 2 years and feel that it is supremely unfair that many of the OCNE schools do not count dental assisting towards their "direct patient care" discretionary points. (I went to school for a year to become a dental assistant. I have dealt with medical emergencies, bodily fluids and have had my fingers in mouths on a daily basis! I'm grumbling, I know.)
  • I have a 4.0 GPA (so far) for all of the OCNE prerequisites (My single B in one of three Chemistry classes will haunt me when I apply to Linfield)
  • I am still one term away from finishing my prerequisites for the majority of the schools to which I plan on applying
  • I don't really think that I will be lucky enough to be accepted to any of the Portland-area community colleges due to my lack of necessary discretionary points (if any of you CURRENT students have found otherwise, I would be very interested to find out what you know!)
  • I will be applying anyway, because I know that I should at least make it onto a waiting list or two and as I have seen in previous threads - they do go through their waiting lists!
  • I sincerely hope that all my hard work will pay off and that I will be accepted SOMEWHERE

Again, I know this is early, but I look forward to seeing the responses from everyone!

Still haven't heard anything from CCC. Been checking my email every 10 minutes...so annoying. Seriously don't know how I'll get through the next few months waiting to hear something.

@Wilsosta...did CCC confirm about orientation?

Ok so I just got off the phone with someone there at CCC. He said that if you are an alternate and as invited to orientation then you go, if not then you do not. He said that for the ones not invited there will be another orientation if needed. So basically they invited alternates to the orientation if they were higher up on the list and did not for the ones lower on the list, then he said that it is.common for those in spot 41 on to still be offered a spot, so I don't know how many alternates they take. So in my case I think I am on the low end of the alternate list for I was not asked to come to orientation. He did not sound 100% sure but what he says make sense.

Wow! Thanks Wilsosta! They really should have confirmed that in their email to alternates. No wonder those that did not receive orientation info are so confused. I would be too. If this is true, what the fella said, then it's kind of cool to know that you are higher up on the waitlist if you received orientation time, but pretty lame for the the others who did not. Thanks for all your info diggin'=)

I thought they only took 40 on the wailtlist for CCC? So it sounds like they took on more and maybe those beyond the 40 acceptance didn't get invited to the orientation, I am assuming? I wish they had waitlist numbers for each of us. This would make it so much easier.

Ditto what @pogues60 said. I think it's kinda sad that not all the alternates got invited to the orientation. If they're not going to assign waitlist #s...what's the point of inviting some alternates but not all? It's like they made it into a sort of secret hierarchy. Obviously candidates talk...this was bound to cause confusion, right? Ugh. Anyway, thanks for confirming @Wilsosta. I appreciate you following up!

Thanks for the info Wilsosta! It's a little disheartening to hear though since I didn't receive orientation info in my email. They definitely should have told those of us who are lower on the list that we would attend an orientation later if offered a spot, and not just left us wondering about it.

Yeah I'm a but sad for I was not offered to go to orientation, so obviously they have us numbered. Would be nice to have a number for then you can at east guesstimate your chance of getting in. But hey we never know what will happen. I haven't seen anyone posting saying they got offered a spot off the alternate list, maybe waiting until after orientation?

I haven't seen anyone posting that they got offered a spot either. Doesn't surprise me though cause I feel like everyone that got a spot at CCC accepted (with the exception of like one person). I'm totally worried that this'll be the year that they don't go 30-40 people into their waitlist :/

I really want to call and clarify that they're emailing now and not waiting for the orientation.

That may be a good idea Born4this. I'm in the same boat. I know PCC is waiting until after their orientation to get to the alternates.

So I called and spoke with the nursing program secretary, and I have a feeling that it was the same guy that @wilsosta spoke with. I asked if you were an alternate, when should you expect to hear (I asked specifically if we should wait until after orientation to expect to get an email) something about an open seat and he confirmed that yes, accepted applicants were expected to accept or decline their seats last Friday, 5/16 and that they started notifying alternates on Monday of this week. He didn't say for sure, but, it sounds like they've already offered the available seats to the alternates at the top of the list for this week, and, they will give them 1 week to respond. So, the next round of waitlisted applicants can expect to hear something about any vacant seats next Tuesday or Wednesday (since Monday is a holiday). I told him that I was one of the alternates invited to the orientation, and, he threw the number 10 out there re how many alternates had been invited to the orientation (he said it was because they wanted to make sure and have at least a class of 40 at the orientation). He mentioned that they do assign numbers to the waitlisted applicants, internally. But, they don't release that info because they don't want people calling to ask about their position on the list. Apparently, because I was invited to orientation, it's more than likely I will get offered a seat at some point...at least that's what he said.

I don't know what to think anymore! All I know is...I am going to stop checking my email every 10 minutes until this time next week. Ugh!

Wow, Born4This, what an earful, right?! So are you saying they said they only sent out around 10 emails to alternates that made it on the waitlist that were invited to the orientation, meaning you are one of the ten people and should be receiving an email soon?

I hope you get a call!
