Applicants to Portland/Salem Area Nursing Schools 2014

Published

I know that it's early, but I really wanted to get a jump on this. I have read the past two years' threads from start to finish and have seen the amazing support given by everyone involved. Considering how competitive it is for nursing school admission, it is extremely informative and heart-warming. I will be applying to all the schools in the Portland/Salem area to which I will qualify. This next year is going to be rough, but ever since I started on this journey I have loved every moment.

A little about me:

  • I am 33, married, no kids.
  • I live in Salem and have taken the bulk of my prerequisites at Chemeketa.
  • I have been working as a Dental Assistant for 2 years and feel that it is supremely unfair that many of the OCNE schools do not count dental assisting towards their "direct patient care" discretionary points. (I went to school for a year to become a dental assistant. I have dealt with medical emergencies, bodily fluids and have had my fingers in mouths on a daily basis! I'm grumbling, I know.)
  • I have a 4.0 GPA (so far) for all of the OCNE prerequisites (My single B in one of three Chemistry classes will haunt me when I apply to Linfield)
  • I am still one term away from finishing my prerequisites for the majority of the schools to which I plan on applying
  • I don't really think that I will be lucky enough to be accepted to any of the Portland-area community colleges due to my lack of necessary discretionary points (if any of you CURRENT students have found otherwise, I would be very interested to find out what you know!)
  • I will be applying anyway, because I know that I should at least make it onto a waiting list or two and as I have seen in previous threads - they do go through their waiting lists!
  • I sincerely hope that all my hard work will pay off and that I will be accepted SOMEWHERE

Again, I know this is early, but I look forward to seeing the responses from everyone!

I am an alternate at CCC, but I javnt received anything about orientation. .. can anyone let me.know the details on that?

Here's what my email said:

"Thank you for your interest in the Nursing Program at Clackamas Community College. At this time we are unable to offer you admission to the 2014-2015 Associate of Applied Science Nursing program. However, your name has been put on the Alternate list, and we would like you to attend the mandatory Orientation meeting scheduled for Wednesday, June 4, 2014 on the Harmony Community Campus, 5:00pm to 7:00pm.

Attending the orientation meeting does not mean or guarantee a seat in the 2014 cohort, but prepares you in the likelihood a spot does become available. You will be notified by email if your name comes up for admission to the program. This meeting is required for all nursing students. You will be given important information regarding uniforms, registration, health history and immunization.

Because lives are uncertain, it is not possible to predict if or when you may be contacted to fill a vacant space. Due to this fact, I regret that I cannot accept inquiries regarding your place on the list or your chances of being offered a position. All admissions decisions will be final for the Nursing 2014-2015 cohort on October 6, 2014."

Wow so odd, here's my email, I won.Der why the difference?

Thank you for your interest in the Nursing Program at Clackamas Community College. At this time we are unable to offer you admission to the 2014-2015 Associate of Applied Science Nursing program.

However, your name has been put on the Alternate list and it is possible that you may be offered admission at a later time if space becomes available. You will be notified by email if your name comes up for admission to the program. Because lives are uncertain, it is not possible to predict if or when you may be contacted to fill a vacant space. Due to this fact, I regret that I cannot accept inquiries regarding your place on the list or your chances of being offered a position. All admissions decisions will be final for the Nursing 2014-2015 cohort on October 6, 2014.

Please remember that in order to accept a position should one become available, you must have completed all program prerequisites by the end of Summer term 2014. Please submit official transcripts to the Registrar’s office if prerequisite classes are completed at an institution other than Clackamas Community College during Spring or Summer terms 2014.

Sincerely,

Allied Health Admissions

Maybe the receipt of the first email is an indication that your name is fairly high on the alternate list. Since they don't tell us an actual place number, that's the only thing I think of that may indicate your likelihood of placement.

hhhmmmm. That's a good question. I'm not sure, but, I think it could mean a couple things. Right? Maybe someone screwed up the email and accidentally left the part about the orientation out? It could also mean that maybe you're lower on the wait list and they're only inviting some of the waitlisted folks? I doubt that though because I thought they want everyone on the waitlist to attend. Either way, I think it's smart that you emailed. I'm sure it was an error.

Maybe so, I was surprised to even get to the I interview round at CCC, missed out on a lot of the extra points. Well best of luck to you, I did email them so will see if they want me to go or not.

I'm in the same boat as you. I was surprised to get to the second round at PCC and CCC. I have no experience in health care (only limited volunteer experience). But you never know. That's why if you have the grades and all of the prereqs done you should totally apply because each year is different in terms of the applicant pool, you know? So maybe that's why you and I got lucky this year :-)

I am sure them not including the orientation information in your email was an error. It just doesn't make sense that they wouldn't invite all of the wait list to come to the orientation. Looking forward to going through this waiting game with you and all the other waitlist hopefuls. Let's try and keep in touch and update with any new information or offers of acceptance!

Sounds good, I'll probably just go to the orientation anyways but will.call tomorrow if I don't hear anything from them by tonight. Best of luck to you!

efda2rn...are you wait listed at CCC too? If so...did you get an email like the one I got or like the one Wilsosta got?

I seriously hope it was an error. All this detective work sucks, huh? The waiting around is ssssoooooooo HARD. Did you apply anywhere else? I applied at MHCC but didn't get in there for the second round. I only at 51 points for CCC, so, that's why I was totally surprised when I got invited for the essay/interview. You said you missed out on a lot of the discretionary points, too. We're you right around 51 points too?

So weird there were different emails going out. Hopefully CCC will email back. Also, does stats need to be finished before Fall? I am in it now and hating it (I should be fine though) just in case, do I need it before?

Mine is like the one @Wilsosta received. I only had 50 points going in, so I was surprised I even received an interview! Attending Clackamas would mean a major upheaval and move (we live in Salem), so I considered it my, "just in case" school. I will not be attending the orientation, no matter what happens, as I have already accepted a spot at OHSU - Monmouth! For those of you still waiting to hear from schools, I wish all the best! If you are interested in another option, Linfield's 2-year BSN has a spring term start that I believe may yet be accepting applications, and I think George Fox is still accepting applications (I think they require the TEAS, though). GOOD LUCK!

@alewis513 - stats isn't required for the CCC program. It's not required for any of the OCNE school programs. I'm fairly certain it's a transfer requirement to transfer to OHSU's AASN in Nursing to RN bridge program.
