Applicants to Portland/Salem Area Nursing Schools 2014

Published

I know that it's early, but I really wanted to get a jump on this. I have read the past two years' threads from start to finish and have seen the amazing support given by everyone involved. Considering how competitive it is for nursing school admission, it is extremely informative and heart-warming. I will be applying to all the schools in the Portland/Salem area to which I will qualify. This next year is going to be rough, but ever since I started on this journey I have loved every moment.

A little about me:

  • I am 33, married, no kids.
  • I live in Salem and have taken the bulk of my prerequisites at Chemeketa.
  • I have been working as a Dental Assistant for 2 years and feel that it is supremely unfair that many of the OCNE schools do not count dental assisting towards their "direct patient care" discretionary points. (I went to school for a year to become a dental assistant. I have dealt with medical emergencies, bodily fluids and have had my fingers in mouths on a daily basis! I'm grumbling, I know.)
  • I have a 4.0 GPA (so far) for all of the OCNE prerequisites (My single B in one of three Chemistry classes will haunt me when I apply to Linfield)
  • I am still one term away from finishing my prerequisites for the majority of the schools to which I plan on applying
  • I don't really think that I will be lucky enough to be accepted to any of the Portland-area community colleges due to my lack of necessary discretionary points (if any of you CURRENT students have found otherwise, I would be very interested to find out what you know!)
  • I will be applying anyway, because I know that I should at least make it onto a waiting list or two and as I have seen in previous threads - they do go through their waiting lists!
  • I sincerely hope that all my hard work will pay off and that I will be accepted SOMEWHERE

Again, I know this is early, but I look forward to seeing the responses from everyone!

Thanks @Born4this I figure they will have more movement after the orientation the waiting game is just killing me. Particularly because if accepted I will be applying for jobs and moving out within the next few months and so everything seems so up in the air!

I know mhcc is 8am-4pm classes but does anyone know how many days a week classes are? I am trying to figure out if I would be able to work a decent amount.

@Born4This. Nothing yet! Man, I thought we would hear something by now, ya know....

I hear working is crazily frowned upon if not impossible. I have a friend who worked about 10 hours a week but only her last year and she is graduating now. I am a single mom so not working is not an option. I have been serving for years now but plan to quit in Sept. I am taking a medical coding course right now and I am hoping to be able to code from home for the next three years of my life and at least make some income.

I know - me too. So frustrating :( I'm convinced I'm not going to hear anything until after MHCCs and PCCs deadlines pass. 2.5 weeks seems like an eternity from now!

Yeah, unfortunately not working isn't an option and I must do it! I will try to find a job close to mhcc bruning center, hopefully serving so it will be less commute and can just work from school.

Serving is always nice. My job is hiring servers right now if you have experience, however, we are by the airport.

Yes I have served at a retirement home for 4 years it was very fast paced don't let it fool you! and have been at my current job a sports bar lil Cooperstown in Hillsboro for about 8 months, love it but would need something closer. Where are you hiring at?

@Born4This, did you say you were #20 on wait list at PCC? If that's the case, you are for sure getting in. I excepted my spot at PCC yesterday, because I can't wait around for CCC forever. Plus, I needed to file for a time-frame extension for my financial aid for PCC, so I really just needed to get the ball rolling. This doesn't mean I won't think about excepting spot at CCC if it's offered. Just happy to know I'm starting a program in the Fall! I will attend CCC's orientation anyways, just so I can get a better feel for the school and to keep my options open.

Does a girl named ---------------- work there she used to work with me. I work at Elmer's on 100th and Sandy blvd. definitely closer to mhcc but still like 20 min away. There is a sports bar/restaurant like lil Cooperstown right across the street from mhcc called genos. That might be a good fit if you are going to mhcc.

--------------- doesn't ring any bells. Hmmm I'll definitely check it out if I do get into mhcc, thanks!

Yup, I am # 20 on the waitlist at PCC @pogues60. Why do you think I am getting in for sure? I'm so hoping to get in (although I'm just like you and CCC is my first choice)!

Glad you accepted your spot - totally can't wait forever to hear from CCC. Plus, if you really want to go to CCC and you hear that you're in off the waitlist, you can always give up your spot at PCC and accept CCC's spot. I would do the same thing you're doing if I were you!

Still crossing my fingers that we both hear from CCC soon!

@pogues60 - I PM'ed you! Check it out ;-)
