Applicants to Portland/Salem Area Nursing Schools 2014

Published

I know that it's early, but I really wanted to get a jump on this. I have read the past two years' threads from start to finish and have seen the amazing support given by everyone involved. Considering how competitive it is for nursing school admission, it is extremely informative and heart-warming. I will be applying to all the schools in the Portland/Salem area to which I will qualify. This next year is going to be rough, but ever since I started on this journey I have loved every moment.

A little about me:

  • I am 33, married, no kids.
  • I live in Salem and have taken the bulk of my prerequisites at Chemeketa.
  • I have been working as a Dental Assistant for 2 years and feel that it is supremely unfair that many of the OCNE schools do not count dental assisting towards their "direct patient care" discretionary points. (I went to school for a year to become a dental assistant. I have dealt with medical emergencies, bodily fluids and have had my fingers in mouths on a daily basis! I'm grumbling, I know.)
  • I have a 4.0 GPA (so far) for all of the OCNE prerequisites (My single B in one of three Chemistry classes will haunt me when I apply to Linfield)
  • I am still one term away from finishing my prerequisites for the majority of the schools to which I plan on applying
  • I don't really think that I will be lucky enough to be accepted to any of the Portland-area community colleges due to my lack of necessary discretionary points (if any of you CURRENT students have found otherwise, I would be very interested to find out what you know!)
  • I will be applying anyway, because I know that I should at least make it onto a waiting list or two and as I have seen in previous threads - they do go through their waiting lists!
  • I sincerely hope that all my hard work will pay off and that I will be accepted SOMEWHERE

Again, I know this is early, but I look forward to seeing the responses from everyone!

I had my interview at Monmouth for OHSU this last Monday. I'm relieved that there will only be two weeks of waiting to find out where to go from here. It was such a beautiful day and Monmouth is gorgeous, I really hope I get accepted.

Taralarson, I was there on Monday, as well, at 3:00. It was a beautiful, but really warm day...add in the nerves and suit jacket and I was ready to boil!

I heard back from CCC...no points for honesty! My adjusted score is the measly 50/66 I originally expected. Probably not enough for an interview invite, but I knew it was a long shot when I applied!

Hey you never know. I have a 51. We had to try. Lets cross our fingers. They finalize the scores on FRI. I wonder how long after that until we hear something.

Probably not too long since interviews are supposed to be sometime in April :)

I only have 51 points as well...oh well. Throwing all my darts at the board at this moment. missjordie I have never done the proctored essay for PCC but I have been trying to write one essay in an hour and a half each day.. its tough but Im hoping its going to pay off on wednesday when I finally do the essay.

efda2rn - I was there at 10am. How did you feel? I feel very calm but I think it's just me letting what will be, be. Trying to tell myself to not let disapointment get me down if I don't make it.

I feel ok about it. It's my second-choice school for financial reasons. My calm comes from the knowledge that, at this point, I've done all I can do and I know that I have a 50-50 shot (64 interviewees, 32 accepted). I still have my proctored essay at Chemeketa coming up on Saturday. taralarson - where else did you apply?

Specializes in Pediatric RN, FNP-BC.

I also feel that way. If it is meant to be....but can't lie, I am nervous waiting to hear!! Hey, we have a 50/50 chance, right? ;)

efda2rn - Originally 2 years ago I started pre-reqs planning to apply to Linn-Benton Community College. Along the way I realized that I would be close in requirements for OHSU and that I would prefer a Bachelor's to an Associate's. I was going to apply to both and thought even if I got into LBCC I could turn it down or go for an accelerated degree afterwards. Ultimately I decided to only apply to OHSU and if I was not accepted I would begin working as a CNA for experience. I have been a CNA for 8 months but haven't had the time to use it. It is a 50/50 so I am hopeful, but one girl sitting next to me was on her 2nd try and another her 4th so I am nervous my 1st try may not be "the one." Ughhhhh, wow thank you for letting me get all that out :) Good Luck at Chemeketa! I know a few girls that applied there as well :)

I got an interview at CCC!

Whoohoo! !! Me too!! Im going the 17th, how about you?

The 17th at 4. I scheduled it for the same day as the PCC proctored essay- I can't really afford to miss another class day. So I'll be a bundle of nerves on Thurs! I will be happy to be finally done with everything though.
