Applicants to Portland/Salem Area Nursing Schools 2014

Published

I know that it's early, but I really wanted to get a jump on this. I have read the past two years' threads from start to finish and have seen the amazing support given by everyone involved. Considering how competitive it is for nursing school admission, it is extremely informative and heart-warming. I will be applying to all the schools in the Portland/Salem area to which I will qualify. This next year is going to be rough, but ever since I started on this journey I have loved every moment.

A little about me:

  • I am 33, married, no kids.
  • I live in Salem and have taken the bulk of my prerequisites at Chemeketa.
  • I have been working as a Dental Assistant for 2 years and feel that it is supremely unfair that many of the OCNE schools do not count dental assisting towards their "direct patient care" discretionary points. (I went to school for a year to become a dental assistant. I have dealt with medical emergencies, bodily fluids and have had my fingers in mouths on a daily basis! I'm grumbling, I know.)
  • I have a 4.0 GPA (so far) for all of the OCNE prerequisites (My single B in one of three Chemistry classes will haunt me when I apply to Linfield)
  • I am still one term away from finishing my prerequisites for the majority of the schools to which I plan on applying
  • I don't really think that I will be lucky enough to be accepted to any of the Portland-area community colleges due to my lack of necessary discretionary points (if any of you CURRENT students have found otherwise, I would be very interested to find out what you know!)
  • I will be applying anyway, because I know that I should at least make it onto a waiting list or two and as I have seen in previous threads - they do go through their waiting lists!
  • I sincerely hope that all my hard work will pay off and that I will be accepted SOMEWHERE

Again, I know this is early, but I look forward to seeing the responses from everyone!

They should give you a point for honesty there.

I got my verification from CCC with 54 points.

I am interviewing Monday too. See you then.

Is anyone else here going in for the essay on the 12th at Chemeketa?

Hi! What great support you all offer here! I just found this thread and created an account. I browsed quickly, but didn't find anyone else applying for the OHSU ABSN in Portland. Is there anyone else who applied and is waiting? Just got an email accepting me into the Fall cohort, super unexpected! Looking to connect with others who will be in the same cohort. Fingers crossed for those of you still waiting!

Congrats, lifeisgood1! 2nd wind, I have my essay at Chemeketa on the 12th at 10:00, I think. What time will you be at OHSU on Monday? My interview is scheduled at 3:00.

Specializes in Pediatrics, Women's Health, Primary Care.

Congrats life is good!! I am in the Fall cohort now-- you will LOVE it!

Hi lifeisgood1, I was accepted into the fall cohort at OHSU too :) There is a separate thread called "Oregon Health and Science University 2014 cohort" on allnurses if you're trying to connect. Congratulations!

I was at Monmouth at 1:00, and will be at Chemeketa at 12:00. OHSU told us that 60 some-odd students were chosen to interview, and 32 will be offered admission. I wonder how many people applied this year? I forgot to ask them. I think the publicity about a nursing shortage caused the huge wave of students that made competition so tight these last years. Watch--the supply of nursing students will decline just as the real shortage hits. Don't get discouraged, anyone! If you really want to be a nurse, you will find a way.

2nd Wind Monmouth had 109 applicants which is less than half of last year, and you are on point with the reason it has been a state wide decline in applicants. The thing is then job market has made a huge turn around in the last year and I mean huge.

I got my points calculation from CCC, as well! One more than I was expecting, but still pretty darn low. Oh well. Does anyone know how OHSU decided which people would interview on specific days? So far, I'm the only person I know interviewing at Monmouth on Monday. I know it isn't alphabetical, because I know people whose last names are both before and after mine who are interviewing Sat...

We (Ashland) were trying to figure that out too. We had two separate interview dates as well. I was in the first batch this past weekend. For our campus, they were interviewing a total of 80 applicants and taking 40. There were 20 at each session. There was an 8:00am time and a 12:30 time. (I had 12:30pm). The last batch of 40 interview on the 19th. I'm assuming they do 20 and 20 that day too?

CCC just emailed my point verification. I have a 57/66. I hope that's competitive.

I got 57/66 at RCC and was in the top 85 asked back for the proctored essay. I think you have a great shot! Good luck :)

Has anyone here done the proctored essay at PCC before? I am curious as to how formal/technical the essay could be. I spoke with my writing teacher today to get some advice and I'm wondering how the essays are scored. Is there a specific rubric that they follow? Like, 5 points for style, 10 points for grammatical correctness, 20 points for content, etc. I'm just hoping to get an idea of what to brush up on in the next week. If I am not allowed to ask that prior to the exam just ignore me please.
