Applicants to Portland/Salem Area Nursing Schools 2014

Published

I know that it's early, but I really wanted to get a jump on this. I have read the past two years' threads from start to finish and have seen the amazing support given by everyone involved. Considering how competitive it is for nursing school admission, it is extremely informative and heart-warming. I will be applying to all the schools in the Portland/Salem area to which I will qualify. This next year is going to be rough, but ever since I started on this journey I have loved every moment.

A little about me:

  • I am 33, married, no kids.
  • I live in Salem and have taken the bulk of my prerequisites at Chemeketa.
  • I have been working as a Dental Assistant for 2 years and feel that it is supremely unfair that many of the OCNE schools do not count dental assisting towards their "direct patient care" discretionary points. (I went to school for a year to become a dental assistant. I have dealt with medical emergencies, bodily fluids and have had my fingers in mouths on a daily basis! I'm grumbling, I know.)
  • I have a 4.0 GPA (so far) for all of the OCNE prerequisites (My single B in one of three Chemistry classes will haunt me when I apply to Linfield)
  • I am still one term away from finishing my prerequisites for the majority of the schools to which I plan on applying
  • I don't really think that I will be lucky enough to be accepted to any of the Portland-area community colleges due to my lack of necessary discretionary points (if any of you CURRENT students have found otherwise, I would be very interested to find out what you know!)
  • I will be applying anyway, because I know that I should at least make it onto a waiting list or two and as I have seen in previous threads - they do go through their waiting lists!
  • I sincerely hope that all my hard work will pay off and that I will be accepted SOMEWHERE

Again, I know this is early, but I look forward to seeing the responses from everyone!

3-year BSN on the Monmouth campus. They don't have an ABSN program, a this time.

That's sooooooo awesome! So happy for you!

Congrats to everyone who has been accepted to OHSU-Monmouth! I am a current student and I hope to see you all on campus next year! Enjoy this moment!

Efda2rn - no waitlist either. I am feeling....inadequate but I will keep making positive changes and hopefully next year it will come together :)

I feel your pain Tara, I didn't get accepted either. I'm not sure what else I could have done to be a better candidate. Oh well! Here's to hoping that one of the other options pans out. Don't give up, we'll get there eventually! :)

So how are all of you guys preparing for the essay/interviews? I have one for Ccc and Mhcc coming up here soon and need to squueze in some preperation time between work and being a mom :)

I am trying to prepare too. I have been going over my experiences, goals and common interview questions. Although last year it seems like the questions must have been hard to prepare for. Mostly just trying to stay calm. I have never had a group interview before.

I have also been accepted to OHSU Monmouth. What a relief! I am waiting for Chemeketa's decision, but I am wondering what the best thing is to do. Go straight for the BSN, or save money by starting out at the community college and finishing at Linfield? What input do you all have?

Just found this website and I love being able to connect with people in the area applying to the same schools. I have an interview thursday for MHCC and am super nervous... I am not sure what to expect with the group interviewing ahhhhh:woot:

I'm glad that PCC doesn't have an interview or else I would be freaking out even more!! Haha I've never done a group interview either so I'm just trying to keep myself calm. But my friend who went through MHCC interview a while back said it wasn't as bad as she thought it was going to be, and just try and remain calm and be yourself because they're just trying to get to know us better. I'm sure we will all do just fine!! Fingers crossed for us though because personally I get really nervous speaking in front of people!! And to those who got into OHSU, congrats to you guys that's such an awesome accomplishment!! :)

Good luck to those of you who are doing the PCC essay today! Mine is tomorrow (so is CCC interview) and I'm trying to keep focused and calm!

Timhamn -

I will be taking some chemistry and find some work as a CNA to fatten up my candidacy for next year. Best of luck to you! And thank you for your kind words :)
