Applicants to Portland/Salem Area Nursing Schools 2014

Published

I know that it's early, but I really wanted to get a jump on this. I have read the past two years' threads from start to finish and have seen the amazing support given by everyone involved. Considering how competitive it is for nursing school admission, it is extremely informative and heart-warming. I will be applying to all the schools in the Portland/Salem area to which I will qualify. This next year is going to be rough, but ever since I started on this journey I have loved every moment.

A little about me:

  • I am 33, married, no kids.
  • I live in Salem and have taken the bulk of my prerequisites at Chemeketa.
  • I have been working as a Dental Assistant for 2 years and feel that it is supremely unfair that many of the OCNE schools do not count dental assisting towards their "direct patient care" discretionary points. (I went to school for a year to become a dental assistant. I have dealt with medical emergencies, bodily fluids and have had my fingers in mouths on a daily basis! I'm grumbling, I know.)
  • I have a 4.0 GPA (so far) for all of the OCNE prerequisites (My single B in one of three Chemistry classes will haunt me when I apply to Linfield)
  • I am still one term away from finishing my prerequisites for the majority of the schools to which I plan on applying
  • I don't really think that I will be lucky enough to be accepted to any of the Portland-area community colleges due to my lack of necessary discretionary points (if any of you CURRENT students have found otherwise, I would be very interested to find out what you know!)
  • I will be applying anyway, because I know that I should at least make it onto a waiting list or two and as I have seen in previous threads - they do go through their waiting lists!
  • I sincerely hope that all my hard work will pay off and that I will be accepted SOMEWHERE

Again, I know this is early, but I look forward to seeing the responses from everyone!

My interview at ccc is tomorrow too!! missjordie when is your's? Mine is at 8 in the morning because I got work after! :( Good luck to you!! The pcc essay went pretty well, i'd say its definitely less nerve wrecking than my interview tomorrow haha! Good luck to you!!! :)

Mine is at 4. :) good luck! Let's be ourselves and rock this!

I had my CCC interview today. It was actually a really relaxed setting! While I wasn't "calm" I didn't feel super stressed, either. Just remember that they want you to do well and to ask a lot of questions. :) Good luck, everyone!

I am happy I found this post! I applied to MHCC, PCC, CCC, and OHSU. MHCC didn't accept me at all, PCC and CCC I have had my proctored essay/ interview with this week and of course OHSU I probably won't hear a thing until June. I am glad that the interview process is over but holy macaroni, I don't want to wait to hear word if I got in or not. This is my first (and hopefully, only) year I have applied and I am so ready to start my nursing journey! Congrats to all of you who already know where you will be this September and to those who are waiting to hear back, I am in the same boat! Good luck to all!

Just got back from the interview! I hope it went well. Everyone in my group was on point and really well spoken! The staff was awesome and really easy going. They seem like caring teachers for sure.

yay!! I'm sure you did great missjordie! Everyone in my group was awesome too!! :) Yeah the faculty ladies were so nice!!! I hope I did well too! Now the waiting game continues haha :D Keeping my fingers crossed!!

I definitely got the best vibes from CCC. The ladies seemed very approachable and nice. I am hoping I can just get in!

Anyone take their MHCC interview yet? If so how did it go? Mine is next week.

Specializes in Pediatric RN, FNP-BC.

I am in a similar boat, as I interview for Lane CC Monday. It is more expensive, but I am 99% sure that I will choose OHSU and just go straight through for it. It can't hurt to learn from a great school like OHSU, right? I also like the idea of a much smaller cohort. Those are my thoughts anyhow.

OHSU wrote me today and told me they plan to send out letters by the beginning of May! Looks like we may find out from OHSU sooner than normal.

Ahh so nervous for my interviews this next week!! I have one at Lane CC on Monday and then one at MHCC on Wednesday! I am not sure what kind of clothes I should wear and I am so nervous for all the questions in the group setting!!!!

If you have a suit, wear it! If you don't, dress as professionally as you can. Keep your hair out of your face: all the way back, or clipped half up/half down. If you're wearing a skirt, it should go no higher than the middle of your knee and wear nylons. Don't wear ridiculous impractical high heels that make you wobble. shirts should have a neckline high enough to cover cleavage. Minimize your jewelry: especially no large and distracting earrings. Keep make up simple and clean. If you can, bring a small notebook and a pen or pencil to take notes or to write down the ames of the interviewers.

I know some of this seems old-fashioned, but I have followed this policy for all interviews and have never failed to get offered either a second interview or the job. When you feel confident and powerful in your clothes, that will translate during the interview. GOOD LUCK!
