Applicants to Portland area schools 2013

U.S.A. Oregon

Published

Hello everyone! I was an avid reader of last years articles on applying to schools here, and it really helped me get an idea of how many points I would need. I thought I'd return the favor. So far I've only applied at PCC with 54.5 points (I think). For some reason, I'm not getting any discretionary points at Chemeketa and very few at Mt. Hood, so I might just forgo them this year. Is it just me or are schools going to a model where you can only really have a chance if you take the prereqs there? Anyways, good luck everyone!!!!

Statement of Intent to enroll is due to CCC by May 24th in order to hold a seat for Fall 2013. I imagine they will start notifying alternates soon after that date.

When does CCC start if they are finalizing it all in October?

Hi everyone. I have been offered spots at both PCC and CCC. I am trying to decide between the two. I was wondering if anyone out there knows about either schools' clinical sites.

On the plus side, someone will be moving up on the alternate list once I make a decision.

I volunteer at Meridian park and have seen students from both schools (and Linnfield). For me the choice was clear due to proximity to my house, class size and facilities. CCC has a brand new state of the art campus and a much smaller class size so the training and interaction with faculty will be much more one on one. The truth is, as a result of OCNE the curriculum will be the same, and if you plan on going to OHSU for the third year, the final outcome will be identical: a BSN from OHSU, so really its about the other issues that are important to you. At this point I will have to go to the school that takes me, so I don't have your luxury of choosing. But if I had to make a choice, for me it would be CCC.

When is orientation?

For CCC, orientation is on June 7 from 1pm to 3pm. PCC told us at the proctored essay that the orientation would be June 19 from 8:30am to noon.

PCC and CCC have similar clinical sites, although I think PCC might have a better connection with the Legacy Health systems, whereas Providence uses Providence more often, due to locations close to campus. Both schools use a lot of long-term care facilities, especially at first. They both have the same amount of clinical hours, since that is the same for all OCNE schools, although I do think the 3 year BSN program at OHSU has more, possibly. CCC does have newer facilities and a smaller class size overall, but I have heard wonderful things about the PCC program and the students that come out of it, and that a lot of places do look at it slightly more better than CCC, although as someone else mentioned, in the end if you continue on, your degree will come from OHSU. If had to make that choice, I would choose PCC.

When does CCC start if they are finalizing it all in October?

My email said final October 4th. I'm guessing that's the end of the first week of school, when everyone locks in their enrollment. I think it's just a way of saying that if you don't get in by Oct 4th, you're not getting in this year.

I got into CCC and am so excited!! I got into PCC as well, but for me was a no brainer to go with Clackamas! It is a much smaller class size, state of the art building and I have heard from many people (I work for Providence) that the students are much more knowledgable compared to PCC. I can't wait... I just wonder if I am the only guy! Haha!!

My understanding from this forum and from what was said when I sat for the essay is that last year they took nearly all of their wait list at PCC... They made it to somewhere around number 90, I believe. I took all my prereqs at Lane CC in Eugene, but I really need to move to Portland for my husband to work. I'm going to proceed with preparing for entry by attending the PCC orientation and doing the same at Clackamas, where I am also an alternate. I'll keep hoping for a Portland slot!

I know for a fact that number fifty something got in last year and so is her friend number 62 on wait list:) So I think that 11 and 42 have a great shot! I will attend the info session and get my financial aid ironed out in the mean time. So excited!

Anyone has a work on what the first term is like? How many days we are in school, are there any rotations, etc, etc...?

PCC wait list :( I am wondering if I should just wait or be pro active? Is there someone I can see, or a contact I can e mail? Thanks

What exactly do you mean? The list is based solely on points, everyone above you has a higher score and everyone below you has a lower score. As people above you decline their invitation to attend you will move up. Last year PCC admitted through #75 on the wait list. The deadline to accept at CCC is May 24 and PCC June 14 so you will def. know by then if enough people have declined spots to move you into a position to be offered a spot in one of the schools you are wait listed for. CCC specifically states in their email that they will not discuss what number you are on the alternates list, and I'm not, sure what talking to someone at PCC will achieve. The best thing to do is attend all the orientations, proceed with the tasks required for admission and hope that you move up. People have been called the day before school starts because others that were offered spots failed to finalize all their requirements. You never know and its best to be ready and available. That is what I plan to do.
