Applicants to Portland area schools

U.S.A. Oregon

Published

Greetings fellow future nurses! I just mailed my application packets for Mt. Hood CC, Clackamas CC, and Portland CC today and excited to be done with them. I have my proctored essay for OHSU this Wednesday and am a little worried because I have NO idea what is going to be asked. I haven't been able to get any feedback on what is on any of the essays. I am also applying to Chemeketa but am probable wasting my time as I am missing 2 of the pre-recs required there that aren't required at the OCNE schools. Well, the worst they can say is no, right?

Anyway, the Oregon Nursing Programs sections has been a little dead lately so I was hoping to spark some dialogue. This is my first year applying and I'm already getting a little stressed. I kind of have a lot riding on getting in somewhere next fall. My fiance and I are kind of planning on it. I'm hoping that doesn't backfire! How's it going with everyone?

One other thing about the question of whether to go on to get a BSN right away or not...in my recent job searches to look at who is hiring, I did see that Providence Hospital is not going to require a new grad to have a BSN to be hired until 2018 so if you get into a program in the next few years you should be okay...but you will eventually have to get your BSN. There are lots of RN to BSN programs you can get into, many of them online and out of state. This is not to deter anyone from doing it, I am definitely going to do it and it will become the standard within the next 5 years but if you really need to start working right away then you will be okay. I personally don't want to go right away because I am getting married this summer and want to start a family soon (I'm in my mid-thirties and need to get going!) so I am choosing to go straight into the work force, work for a few years and have a baby and then start taking classes online, one at a time...I think it takes about 3 total years to get the degree if you do it one at a time but this means I can still work full time, start a family, AND get my BSN. This is what works for me but as I said before, do what's right for you and your life situation...just don't feel that you aren't going to be hired if you don't get it right away. that's my two cents ;)

Well, I would have to say that I am really surprised at how little conversation is going on between 2012 applicants. I have read through about 40+ pages of conversation for same title post but with 2011. There was so much chatter about applying, the waiting period, the first letters, day after interviews/essays...etc. I was hoping we would have a little more input from others. Oh well, guess I will have to stress out and wait all by myself, lol.

But good luck to everyone still the same. I might check back in a few weeks to see if anything new comes in. But for those that are interested in more info, check out the 2011 Portland Applicant posts. It's amazing how interactive everyone was.

If anyone out there knows of a different thread that people are chatting on, I would love to know where it is. Thanks.

Hi all!! I am also surprised by how the scant amount of conversation going on this year! I have spent hours perusing past conversations, but would love to hear from others who have just applied and are playing the waiting game! It is torturous, and there is still so much time to go.... Where did everyone apply? Has anyone heard from U of P so far? Good luck to all!!!

I have not heard from UP yet either! I saw in last year's thread that they didn't get their letters until MArch 3rd, so soon! I'm getting pretty anxious! Has anyone heard from UP?

I still haven't but am also anxious, since I also read that last year people started getting them right around now!

I applied to Clackamas, PCC, Mt Hood and OHSU.... I have no idea, really, how long before I hear anything from anyone! I am guessing at least 3-4 weeks, UGH!!

Nothing in the mail today :(

Hello pdx area applicants, not too much chatter this year! Last year I'd applied to pcc, mhcc, ccc, and ohsu. I was waitlisted and then later accepted into MHCC, but I declined due to finances. I really wanted to be financially secure and able to not have to work while in the program. So I finished my pre reqs, and applied again this year with 6 more points, but only to mhcc. Anyways, just wanted to wish you all luck, and don't stress out too much, the process is quite smooth, and the time will be here before you know it. Also, wanted to let you all know that today I received my email from MHCC saying my application has been received and I'll here back in the end of April. Best wishes for you all:)

Hi everyone! I've been reading through the forums, especially those from last year, to see when notifications are going to arrive. I'm waiting to hear from OHSU ABN, Linfield, and George Washington. I have a skype interview with University of Arizona on Saturday and have been accepted to University of Portland for Spring 2013. I'm really anxious to hear back from OHSU and GW. I'm also excited about UP but it's a lot of money... If anyone hears anything please post!

Well, I recieved my points letter for Clackamas! A week earlier than I thought. It says that notices of interviews will be sent after the 6th of April, which is the last day to challange your points letter. Nothing yet from the other 3 schools. Hmm...waiting nervously! Anything with anyone else out there.

Hello to all and thanks for posting!

I applied to University of Washington, PCC, MHCC, CCC and Clark. I just got my points letter from CCC yesterday (60) so I was excited to share! I applied to OHSU last year but since I was only qualified to do the 3 year program, and it's the same BSN as any OCNE school, I didn't apply there this year (SO $$$). I'll try to get a job ASAP with just ADN and just take classes but I might end up moving out of the area (to follow my lover!). I have a few friends in OHSU's ABN, and I know someone in PCC's program. I am currently working as a CNA in downtown Vancouver since last Sept. (walk to work!) and volunteering at OHSU on a general surg. floor. I have also volunteered at Wallace Medical Concern (awesome people) for the mobile health screenings which I REALLY enjoyed. I did get to write the essay for UWash but they don't give any more feedback till April! For points at other programs I had 58? at PCC, 59? MHCC, 60 at CCC, and 42 at Clark (out of 52). OOOPPPS gotta go! Write more later...

Hi Future Nurses!!

I am new to this forum and have applied to the PCC and OHSU traditional BSN programs. I am a 38 y/o career switcher - I am going from IT Project Management to being a Nurse. I did all my pre-reqs at PCC and feel pretty good about getting in the program there - or at least making it to the proctored essay stage. I am still very anxious about finding out for sure though. I applied to PCC/MHCC and CCC last year expecting not to get into MHCC and CCC - but having a strong (I thought 59 points) PCC application. Turned out that I forgot to include a copy of my Oregon Board of Nursing CNA license verification and that cost me 4 points and I didn't make the cut. I did use that extra year to re-take A&P 1 to raise my grade from a B to an A and I work full time as a CNA in a sub-acute care facility. So this year my score should be 63-ish. I still am quite paranoid that I left something out - even though I triple checked it and three other people checked as well. :) I do wish PCC would do a point verification letter like CCC does, that would help quite a bit. I don't really know what to expect from OHSU, their class is quite small and I know that they are even more competitive. So good luck to all and I look forward to hearing some great success stories soon.
