Hi fellow applicants for 2010!!
I wanted to start a thread for all of us who are applying to various nursing schools in the area for 2010. I have applied to five different places: OHSU-Monmouth, University of Portland, Portland Community College, The University of Washington, and Boise State University. I wanted to cover myself and hopefully ensure that I would get in somewhere. I have a really good GPA and experience as an EMT-Basic so I am hoping that that will help my chances.
Just waiting it out until they send out notifications.....I just want to hear back!!!
Good luck to everyone who applied!
As a MHCC alternate the advice I would give to those trying to decide between MHCC and another nursing program...accept anywhere but MHCC!
In all seriousness at my interview Janie had said the issues MHCC had during their first year as an OCNE school was because they were the first CC going through it. She had thought PCC shouldn't have the same problems as they did because a lot has been figured out since they first joined. With all the PCC acceptance letters and soon CCC and Clark hopefully us alternates will be getting some good news soon!
Best of luck to everyone!!

I don't really understand what you mean here. I think any school that is changing its curriculum to the OCNE program is going to have issues that need to be ironed out. Its not the OCNE program itself that is the problem, it is the changes that need to be made by the school itself. MHCC has already ironed those out over the past few years. If PCC is just beginning OCNE, I might be wary of starting the program during their first year with it. They will have things that need to be worked on, and anxiety among the staff. Change is hard for people.

Of course change can be difficult for some people. What I was trying to say is like Janie had said at least PCC has resources from MHCC and CCC to fall back on and hopefully learn from their mistakes. When MHCC started their OCNE program they had no other resources to learn from. Hopefully it will go smoothly for PCC this year. There have been several posts on here concerned over this and I was just trying to give some reassurance.

Everyone I've spoken with who has been in the first OCNE class at their school has said that it was turbulent. Even when they had another school's resources to fall back on....because the "other" school didn't start with the same program, so the likelihood of them experiencing glitches in the same place isn't high.
It's great that PCC is feeling optimistic......but I still wouldn't expect smooth sailing.

As someone who in another life rolled out large structural, system and policy changes to businesses I find that each facility/company has less problem with rollouts than previous facilities/companies because they are aware of the pitfalls that were previously encountered and are prepared for them.
From what I gathered from those I talked to at PCC they have done a lot of legwork and training to prepare for this change. I think it will be bumpy because change always is, but it will be ok. You also have to look at the height of the bar. Since the first CC rolled out it's OCNE program the standards for student entry have gone up consistently every year. In every group of students you have the handful that will excel regardless of the challenges put before them because they are wired to squeeze out every drop of information that is available and incorporate it into their learning program. The bulk of nursing students that I have made friends with as we have gone through pre-reqs are the ones that have this capacity. The ones who will get an A in A&P from the worst Biology professor or an A in Micro from the guy who doesn't lecture on test material but only from outside reading.
I don't think PCC will be without it's challenges but I do think that so long as we know that going in we will do well because the curriculum is well put together and the standards of achievement are benchmarked by all those ladies who have gone before us.
I appreciate your thoughts, but schools all operate independently and I would think that those resources are mostly from within, not from the outside....I'm sure PCC will be a great school after some time adjusting to their new system. Some faculty will probably leave and there will be stress among the staff while the changes are made. Not fun for a student.... Its the school that needs to make the change, the OCNE program is all the same. I dont really see why MHCC should be off the radar for applicants...because they have already successfully made the changes not yet made by other schools, and are moving forward in a positive way. the dean is probably right in that MHCC may have been helpful in sorting out many of the OCNE general requirements for others but i still think PCC will spend a few years struggling with their own changes. just my 2 cents.

It will absolutely be doable, I don't think anyone is saying otherwise. I think folks are just commenting that this year might be a bumpier ride then future years will be at PCC. And that this is definitely one factor to consider if an applicant has a choice between programs.

Yes, i agree. just be prepared for it going in and remain flexible. and i would add "gents" to all those that have gone before you.... don't forget the guys! :)
I know there was a previous post that mentioned quite a bit of the MHCC program is done online. How has this worked out for those in the program? Will this be the case w/ PCC as well? I am a little turned off by this, simply because I have always done well in online classes, but feel like I miss out on a lot.

friends in the program with many, MANY complaints. thats all i can say on this forum. Just choose another school if you can. i wouldnt waste my time or money on a place with such a poor reputation. we are lucky to have what...9 nursing programs in the local area? there are lots of options for you. go where you have heard positive feedback from recent students. there is no reason not to be picky about your education!!! you pay good money and work very hard, you need to start to be an advocate for yourself, as well as your patients. good luck with your choice.
