I wanted to start a thread for all of us who are applying to various nursing schools in the area for 2010. I have applied to five different places: OHSU-Monmouth, University of Portland, Portland Community College, The University of Washington, and Boise State University. I wanted to cover myself and hopefully ensure that I would get in somewhere. I have a really good GPA and experience as an EMT-Basic so I am hoping that that will help my chances.
Just waiting it out until they send out notifications.....I just want to hear back!!!
As evidence that different folks have different experiences :) I had the opportunity to go to an OCNE CC or to OHSU. I chose OHSU and I'm so happy I did. We do write papers, but we also have plenty of clinical time (I'm in my second year and have put in foley's, IV's, done blood draws, etc), in addition I'll have a two term preceptorship in senior year.
Many of my friends went through the CC program, and it just seems that we've had far more opportunities in clinical areas outside of medsurg, and in general there was more depth to the material we learned. Our prof's are astounding as well. They are authors of textbooks used nationwide (as well as in our program), still actively practice in NP, and CNS roles, conduct research and are very skilled at passing on their knowledge.
OHSU is expensive, and I'm sure that MHCC is a fine program, but if you have the chance to got to OHSU for the entire program....I'd recomend taking it!

Its great to have views from different people, thats what this forum is all about. i'm glad you had a good experience at OHSU, and I think its great that people are defensive about the program they went through, that shows that they were happy there and felt it was worth their time. Your choice in schools just depends on what type of nursing you are interested in and when you want to start working, and all of that... It sounds like either of these schools would be good choices. Avoid others if you can, unless you hear good things from RECENT grads. I have heard that some programs in the area are "sinking," and thats not a good time for anybody...
I found out that I'm on the waitlist for mt. hood. I feel pretty good about that since many alternates get in each year. I suppose that is probably because they have the winter cohort, and people excepted else where might rather start in the fall. I'm still waiting on my rejection letter from OHSU (I'm assuming that's what it is since they only have 32 spots and close to 400 applicants). I have pretty high hopes for PCC. They admit 100 and I felt pretty good about my essay, but that doesn't mean anything. And then there's CCC who hasn't even sent out there invites.
just found out that i got waitlisted as well. congrats on mhcc 2010 student!!! at least you have the comfort of knowing you for sure got into nursing school....i'm just waitlisted at two schools right now. now i'm wishing i would of applied to more schools....really regretting it right now that i didn't.
purple rose, congrats!!! replace that sad face w/ a happy face, pl--lease! y'all should be proud of yourself! also, congrats to all those who got into some kind of alternate list and those who got accepted into a nursing program at ohsu, ccc, mt hood, mt. st. helens, mt. bachelor, mt. everest, etc... y'all should be happy and excited! there are people in much worse scenario who wishes to be in your shoes. i.e. i have gotten two denial letters and waiting on two more :) i am still waiting to hear from ohsu or ccc, i will jump off of my roof in excitement if i get on at least an alternate list. i don't care if i have to write papers or wipe butts, just get me into some kind of school for goodness sake! i don't know why i haven't heard from ohsu yet? i wonder if that is another denial letter, cuz they usually send those out late :-) nonetheless, congrats to y'all and please stop complaining and start celebrating!!! :yeah::yeah::yeah::yeah::yeah::yeah:
Okay I have to admit, Kurd RN, you kinda put a smile on my face for the first time today after many many many teardrops. I agree that at least there's a chance. I'm just sad that it's not for certain and I might have to wait a year! A year! before I can start nursing school! I was really hoping that I would get in. I want this so badly that it kinda hurts. But you're right. It's not that bad. I need to be more grateful. It's just hard because you kinda have your hopes up since you're on an alternate list but it's almost like you just get your hopes up and wait longer and you could get your dreams crushed all over again after some more waiting game!!! But okay I'm done complaining and will try to be happy and hope for the best. Hope you get better news tomorrow! TO everyone else who were accepted somewhere....CONGRATS CONGRATS CONGRATS! Make the most out of your nursing school because there's a LONG line of us that would kill to be in your shoes. So make the most out of it! CONGRATULATIONS TO YOU ALL! I can only hope I will be lucky enough that things might turn to my favor here soon.
I received my letter from OHSU today, I am an alternate, as well. However, I am going to decline because I already got into the Linfield accelerated program and that's a better choice for me at this time. Wish I could be giving someone a spot at OHSU, but at least I'm not taking one.... and maybe a few of you will get bumped up a spot. ;-)
If you're on a waiting list, don't lose hope... and if you didn't make it this year, keep plugging away at it. You can do it!!!! Good luck everyone!

red rose, i mean purple rose, thank you as well. yes, be hopeful and don't give it up unless someone pays you million dollars or you win the lottery. just kid :-) nonetheless, i thought about crying, giving my hopes up, complaining, etc... but for what. it is not going to help me by any chance, in fact, it will hurt me more. therefore, i am just going to stay positive. i don't know what are all your belieafs are like, but i believe that everything happens to an individual in life, has it's own purpose, whether it is good or bad. so, if i don't get in this year, so what, will try again next year. the fact is that i ain't gona give up no matter what.

So I just got an e-mail from Mt. Hood saying oh, the alternate number we gave you yesterday was for your skills check off, this is your real alternate number, and the number is twice the size. Somebody messed up royally. I'm very dissapointed.

I got that same email and it was quite disappointing! When I saw the email I was hoping that my number was higher up on the list but nope it was lower!!! Ahhh, frustrating!
