Applicants to PDX area Nursing Schools 2010

Published

Hi fellow applicants for 2010!!

I wanted to start a thread for all of us who are applying to various nursing schools in the area for 2010. I have applied to five different places: OHSU-Monmouth, University of Portland, Portland Community College, The University of Washington, and Boise State University. I wanted to cover myself and hopefully ensure that I would get in somewhere. I have a really good GPA and experience as an EMT-Basic so I am hoping that that will help my chances.

Just waiting it out until they send out notifications.....I just want to hear back!!! :banghead:

Good luck to everyone who applied!

Hi all, just wanted to report that I got my letter form OHSU today- I didn't get accepted, but I am on the alternate list. Good luck to you all. I am dying to hear from MHCC (tomorrow), as they are my first choice!!!

2010 student good job on making it to the alternate list! At least there's still a chance! Did you find out how far down the list you are and how many people are on it? Also I'm just curious if you live in portland...since you are the first to post on here that you got a letter. Again congrats on making it on the list!

I just received my email from MHCC and I made the alternate list! #34...I know its better than a denial and last year they said they took all there alternates but I am holding off on celebrating just yet. Hopefully alot of the accepted students accept spots elsewhere!

Just got my ACCEPTANCE email from MT HOOD for Fall!! Im soooo excited this was my number one program!!! Good luck to everyone!!!!!

Congrats on your acceptance!!

I received my letter from OHSU (alternate) and my email from MHCC (alternate, top 10 rank), so more waiting!*wine

Thanks! I am actually really proud of myself (not to sound full of it...). They didn't give any specific info as to where I am on the waitlist. I am not sure if I will even remain on it, because I just got accepted to MHCC, and I got a good feeling from their program. We shall see. I know it would be hard to turn down even a chance at OHSU, but it is so spendy...

Just found out that I got waitlisted as well. Congrats on MHCC 2010 student!!! At least you have the comfort of knowing you for sure got into nursing school....I'm just waitlisted at two schools right now. Now i'm wishing I would of applied to more schools....really regretting it right now that I didn't. :crying2:

Yeah, to all of those that got in at Mt Hood!!!!! Its a great program, you will not be disappointed. If you have 2 or more choices of schools, I would suggest going to Mt. Hood. There is nothing better at OHSU, except cost, and if you want to continue for your BSN, you get an automatic entry into that program.

I have heard from numerous students from BSN programs that all they did was write papers in nx school, and they never put in a foley, among many other skills. I don't know about you but I don't think writing tons of papers is going to make me a better nurse. I would rather know how to put in a foley correctly. I kinda feel like my patients would appreciate my skill iin that area as well. But thats just me.

This is what I got from Mt Hood today, after getting on the alternate list for the interviews.

This letter is scary. How can one use "strategery" when potential new admission prereq-s are posted after the first week of the fall term and everything in progress (the winter term, term of application) will not count.

Did anyone got a wind on what changes Mt. Hood is master planning?

The letter:

Thank you for your application to the Mt. Hood Community College Associate Degree of

Nursing program for Fall Term 2010 / Winter 2011. I am sorry to inform you that you were not

selected to enter the program. While you have not been selected for entry into this program,

the selection committee did feel you have potential as an applicant.

You are encouraged to reapply for Fall 2011 admission into this program or any other Allied Health

Programs. If you do reapply for 2011 admission into the Nursing program, you will need to review

the new application thoroughly. The Oregon Consortium for Nursing Education (OCNE) and Mt.

Hood Community College are currently reviewing the Nursing application packet. Upon completion

of this review, the 2011 application packet on our website (no later than late September 2010).

In addition to the Nursing program, MHCC also offers the following Allied Health programs:

Practical Nursing, Surgical Technology, Respiratory Care, Physical Therapist Assistant,

Medical Assistant, Medical Office Specialist, Mental Health / Human Service, and Dental

Hygiene. For more information about these programs, please find a listing of these programs

on our College's website at Programs of Study

.

There will be a general post-selection/informational meeting on Thursday, June 3, 2010,

3-4 pm, Room 211, Bruning Center. The Bruning Center is located on 1484 NW Civic Drive

in Gresham, and you can find directions at Driving Directions to The Bruning Center

. I encourage you to attend

this meeting, in order to review the admission requirements and learn ways to improve your

application for next year. Please note that this informational meeting is designed to answer

general questions, not a time to go over your application individually. If you have any

questions regarding the content of this letter, please contact the Nursing Admissions Evaluator

at 503-491-7341 or [email protected].

Thank you for your interest in Mt. Hood Community College and good luck in your

educational pursuits.

I don't understand your question. sounds like they are simply changing the application, not necessarily the pre-reqs, perhaps they will add an essay to the application or something...who knows...but its good they are having an info meeting. sounds like a great place to get your questions answered, yes?

keep trying, and in the meantime, work as a CNA if you can. That is great experience, and an easy way to get into a hospital nx job when you graduate. I really wished I had that under my belt before I started.

good luck and don't give up. :)

Traveler to bee,

thank you for the advice.

I already work as a CNA. I have 4000 hours and my two-year anniversary is coming up in June.

My post was an alarm going on in my head. I started taking pre-reqs in 2006, and schools have changed their admission criteria couple of times. For example, Clark used to give out points for holders of CNA licenses, but not anymore. There are many examples of how program requirements had changed.

My question was:

Does anybody know what changes are coming to the application process at MHCC?

As evidence that different folks have different experiences :) I had the opportunity to go to an OCNE CC or to OHSU. I chose OHSU and I'm so happy I did. We do write papers, but we also have plenty of clinical time (I'm in my second year and have put in foley's, IV's, done blood draws, etc), in addition I'll have a two term preceptorship in senior year.

Many of my friends went through the CC program, and it just seems that we've had far more opportunities in clinical areas outside of medsurg, and in general there was more depth to the material we learned. Our prof's are astounding as well. They are authors of textbooks used nationwide (as well as in our program), still actively practice in NP, and CNS roles, conduct research and are very skilled at passing on their knowledge.

OHSU is expensive, and I'm sure that MHCC is a fine program, but if you have the chance to got to OHSU for the entire program....I'd recomend taking it!
