Applicants to PDX area Nursing Schools 2010

Published

Hi fellow applicants for 2010!!

I wanted to start a thread for all of us who are applying to various nursing schools in the area for 2010. I have applied to five different places: OHSU-Monmouth, University of Portland, Portland Community College, The University of Washington, and Boise State University. I wanted to cover myself and hopefully ensure that I would get in somewhere. I have a really good GPA and experience as an EMT-Basic so I am hoping that that will help my chances.

Just waiting it out until they send out notifications.....I just want to hear back!!! :banghead:

Good luck to everyone who applied!

CC programs are about 1200, I might look into that. The other expense for me that has been the most prohibitive is daycare costs for my son. He will be in daycare if I get into nursing school too, so we'll have to get it done either way. 800 is better than 1200 though...

To help with the daycare costs the program was only 3 or 4 weeks. I think that may be shorter than the CC. So it could work out well factoring in less need for daycare and the possibility of reimbursment. Good luck with your decision.

I took my CNA class at a nursing home. It was only a few hundred. It only had a few students so we had a lot of one on one time. Let me know if you want the place I went to. They were great.

I would love to hear about both guys, that would be great! Hopefully I don't need to go get one but a backup plan is absolutely essential! :-) There's no guarantees in this field!

Anyone received mail from Clackamas yet? :)

deasiac-btw CC programs are about 6 weeks long, so thats great at only 3-4 weeks long! :-) Is there any extra costs associated, like scrubs and stuff? I would assume so but I have no idea.

Also, this is in another thread, but where are you guys getting your vaccinations done? I need Hep B, Varicella (I had pox when I was a kid, but I don't know if a titers test will be sufficient), and tetorifice, plus of course the physical and stuff. I got the tb screen done when I started volunteering at the hospital so thats free and taken care of-thank goodness!

I know county health clinics have them but the wait is long and they are still spendy...

NO word from Clackamas yet for me..waiting anxiously!

How much are the community college programs? I went up to washington two summers ago because the program was shorter. I paid 800 but I dont know how that compares to the CC programs. Also while I was there I was instructed to keep my reciept because I could get half my money back for working at certain places. Then you can transfer your license to Oregon. Its worth looking into.

I did mine at Lane CC and it was about $800 and took 10 weeks.

If you do your CNA program at Clackamas, they will give you points for doing it with them, and they will give you points if you work at one of there clinical sites. They also will give you points if you work in direct patient care. That's 9 points right there.

jenmiller and monkeyduty - I will see you guys in the Fall at Linfield!

purplerose - Today I decided on Linfield, so I will be giving up my spot at UP for the Fall start. I hope you get in!

I wish everybody else peace and persistence until you get to your goal!

LilaOR! Thank you for your post!! I wish you the best at Linfield and your nursing endeavor!!!

Purple rose and Traveler2bee, you make me think to myself and say "I am glad I joined this site!" Thanks for making me feel better, I wanted to shoot myself when I got my second rejection letter:crying2: But now after reading your posts, I feel much better :dncgbby:Hope to hear somthing from CCC or OHSU soon! I hope you are right and from now on we hear nothing, but good news. Wish you the best of luck as well !!!

I like the dancing baby! Glad you feel better about everything. It's hard to stay positive, but I think good things will happen. We just have to keep our sight fixed and believe it will happen. Remind yourself that the wait is worth it because one day we will get to do something amazing and help people! Crossing my fingers for this week's OHSU letter!!!!

Good luck to you and everyone else that is still waiting! ☺

Hello! I am a pre-nursing student right now. Since all of you seem to have gotten pretty far in the process..I was hoping you could pass on some information to me. I have found it frustrating that every school in Oregon and Washington seems to have different requirements for pre-req's. Some require chem some not, some a certain specific BIO (other than A & P) some not..etc etc..

How do you balance all of the pre-req's each school wants? It seems like I would have to be in school for an extra 2 terms JUST for the outside requirements schools ask for (other than A&P, PSYC, some addl form of BIO etc.). Can anyone give some advice?

Thank you!

I figured out all the schools I was interested in and then I made a speadsheet with all the Prereqs for each one. That way, I could see which ones were the closest to each other....basically so I didn't end up having to take a class just for one of the school's I applied to.

At least for Oregon, with OCNE most of the school's had pretty similar prereqs....it was just the classes for the discretionary points that were different.
