Applicants to PDX area Nursing Schools 2010

Published

Hi fellow applicants for 2010!!

I wanted to start a thread for all of us who are applying to various nursing schools in the area for 2010. I have applied to five different places: OHSU-Monmouth, University of Portland, Portland Community College, The University of Washington, and Boise State University. I wanted to cover myself and hopefully ensure that I would get in somewhere. I have a really good GPA and experience as an EMT-Basic so I am hoping that that will help my chances.

Just waiting it out until they send out notifications.....I just want to hear back!!! :banghead:

Good luck to everyone who applied!

I have read through the post and dont see any that look as though they give someone an advatage in the essay. That makes me wonder which ones you guys are talking about. I dont see anything wrong with asking for suggestions on preparing for something you dont know about. No one on here was asking what the specifice questions were. I am trying to figure out where any damage would have been caused from.

I apparently offended or upset some people here in my panic, but I NEVER asked for anything specific about the essays. I only asked for advice from more seasoned applicants. I also never shared anything that could be used to help anyone anymore than they could help themselves. I quoted PCC's website for things they had already listed very publicly, and nothing I shared was a secret at all. I never tried to give anyone an edge, and I also never asked for one. I hope you all don't feel that way, and I'm sorry I was panicking. I would NEVER cheat or ask anyone to help me cheat, I can get in on my own good merits. I appreciated the post of questions that were already available on the forum, it was a great resource but I had already been doing all the things they suggested. I sincerely hope everyone did great and I hope we all make it this year!

(The total amt allowed for both questions is 2 pages 12pt type double spaced.

Look at the 7 goals for the PCC nursing program to see the types of things they will be looking for in the answers.)

No one in the first group knew this information going in to write their essay. And, even after this post, people kept pressing for more.

Look, I want everyone to do well. I hope we all get in.

All I am saying is to be very aware of keeping things confidential, thats a gigantic part of the nursing profession as a whole. You really can't talk about your patients with your family, friends, or even your partner, so get used to that now by self monitoring what you write. It is certainly ok to help each other and support each other. The interview is a scary part of the program, but just be honest, confident and positive, and you will do fine.

Also, another big piece of advice: don't be defensive, make excuses, blame others, whine or complain...EVER. Learn to take things as they come, be flexible, and adapt to change easily. To the poster who wanted to complain to someone about how their essay was formatted, don't. Thats your quickest way out of the program. Did you consider that they may have done this on purpose, just to see how you reacted to a challenge? People who make a big stink out of small things, can't solve the problem on their own or try to manage their own stress by overreacting or blaming others do not make very good nurses. Nursing is incredibly hard and stressful, this is only the beginning. Find a way to deal with it effectively. Yoga, exercise, massage, even therapy if necessary.

Learn to accept a challenge with grace and move forward in a calm and positive way. :)

Good luck!

It was never my intention to ask for confidential information. I apologize to anyone who was offended. I was just wanting a basic what to expect kind of thing since I had never done one before. If it makes you feel better, don't worry about me taking anyone's position.......I am pretty sure I bombed my essay. :o

You guys need to stop apologzing! No one did anything wrong. The point of these boards is to get information and advice and that is what you did. No one got on here and asked what are the question so I know what to expect. There is nothing wrong with asking what peoples strategy for preparing for something like this is.

I agree. Stop apologizing, and move on.

And if you think and feel and say that you failed the essay, than you probably did. You really have to BELIEVE in yourself and your abilities to be a good nurse, tell yourself that you did well...you at least did the best you could and really, thats the most you could do, right??

if you start saying positive things to yourself, you will start to believe it, trust me. :clown:

The interview is all about how you react to pressure, showing your confidence and your communication skills. Get good at these things, they will be an integral part of your career from now on. If you need help with these skills, seek it out now.

One week out: Micro final, 10 page paper for ethics, gen chem final, statistics final, statistical analysis paper, 48 hours of work on the weekend, not accosting the mail man for OHSU acceptance letters -priceless

I just try to ignore the mailman until I see that other people have started to recieve things. This is my second year applying to schools and Ilearned my lesson last year not to stress myself over things out of my control. I would love to get in but just in case I dont I focus on coming up with a back up plan which I didnt do last year. This has been very good for keeping my mind off of the letters I am still waiting for.

Where has everyone gotten their CNA? I know that the Community colleges offer courses, is there somewhere a little more affordable? Any other cna programs that are better than CC's? Thats my backup plan since I don't have mine yet...and trying not to harass the mailman for CCC letters...lol

Whoa why was in underlined? Weird...

How much are the community college programs? I went up to washington two summers ago because the program was shorter. I paid 800 but I dont know how that compares to the CC programs. Also while I was there I was instructed to keep my reciept because I could get half my money back for working at certain places. Then you can transfer your license to Oregon. Its worth looking into.
