I'll be moving to Rice, Tx in 6-12 months. I'm a little uneasy about working in Tx from reading some of the threads. I'll be living near Corsicana, Waxahachie, and Ennis..any good places for an RN to work? How about Baylor in Dallas? Agencies? Travel Companies?
Any advice is appreciated.
FYI..I have several years ICU experience, a few years PACU and Float, 3 years case management experience, a little HH and Wound care and 5 years clinical instructor experience.

I'll be in TX in '08 to close on a house with hubby. We are from FL but home prices have skyrocketed in the areas we would be willing to live in and property taxes and home insurance(IF you can get it) are ridiculously high. And you want to start an RN off there at $18? I make $32 an hour now in PA as a LPN and pay 780/mo in rent (well the travel co pays it but still) I will not pay 9k a year in tax and insurance for a 350k house on 18 bucks an hour in central FL. Not to mention the house is half the size of what we found in TX for a third of the price.
Being a native californian living ALL over the state over 25+ years, visiting places that I didn't live, having friends and relatives all over the state, as well as having a brother in law who is one of the number one contractors in the state with a wife who is one of the premier real estate agents in the states qualifies me to speak about the states real estate market in a little more than "just a stupid hick from texas baggin on california" status.
Yes, the RE market is in decline, but the RE market out there is still outragelously out of line with most of the country and their salaries do not compare with their cost of living. You cannot tell me there are many of not ANY decent houses in decent neighborhoods, with decent schools that are selling for 50K in California. Whereas here in N Texas where I'm living, the median house price may be 119K there are more houses (nice little houses) selling for 45-75K than there are over 100K.
I can't think of a city in Cali (and no I'm not thinking about San Fran, or LA) that if I saw an ad in the paper for a 50K house that I'd be willing to drive thru the neighborhood to look at it, at least not without a 9mm in my purse. And I definitely wouldn't sleep there at night.
Well ... obviously you guys haven't been out here for awhile because the market has completely changed. Just do a google search on California real estate.I can guarantee you that nothing priced at $625K is moving fast these days and if they are lucky enough to get that price, it won't last long because prices are falling fast. The idea that any property would easily fetch $650K in this market is ridiculous.
Places like San Francisco are actually losing population because people are moving inland where they can pick up houses for as little as $200-$250K. And, because of the population growth in those inland areas, hospitals are expanding where you can make great money as a nurse with a much lower COL.
California is a huge state with 35 million people. You can't make generalizations for the entire state based on one visit or one area .... when so much has changed with housing prices just in the last few months.
In my area of Texas, housing prices are dropping. My house is probably worth less than I paid for it 5 years ago. Houses are sitting on the mkt for months and months. The listings and signs frequently say "price reduced!"
My house is a 3/1.75/2. Nice house in a nice area. Paid $107,000. 5 years ago. However, there is a big surplus of nurses here. Wages are very low, and jobs are scarce. All the RNs I know in this town (including me) have become travelers just so we can work.
I hope we can make some money on our house when we sell.

Is This true ? A surplus of nurses in TX ? Can somebody chime in cause hubby and I are coming in '08 and thats contrary to what we're being told evrywhere else. Im baffled.
