Anyone working at Duke? I have question about pay range

U.S.A. North Carolina

I am interested in an outpatient oncology infusion position posted at the Morris center at Duke- anyone know the pay range on Duke jobs? WakeMed posts the ranges, but I cannot find out about Duke or UNC.

Please feel free to PM me

Try calling them. They seem to be pretty open about giving their salary ranges out.

Duke usually offers a lower pay rate than Wake Med. They will tell you that yes, this is what we are offering you but you will be able to put Duke on your resume. This was actually said to a former co-worker of mine that questioned the pay rate in an interview because it was significantly lower that what she was making.

I would imagine working in such an amazing facility, would be incredible training for a new graduate.

I think that you should always caution getting caught up in the name of facility I believing that it is synonomous for a good place to work & good training. Within the area Duke has one of the highest turnover rates. I have known a number of people that have worked at Duke and didn't find the facility too amazing, including new grads.

I totally agree with JAPAHO41!!! I moved to NC a little over a year ago and came straight to Duke, believing that from their reputation, I would learn a ton and so on. I have not been impressed. Not at all. I did traveling contracts for a while before coming here and as such, worked at huge teaching facilities to small community hospitals and I must tell you, I've seen things run better at many small hospitals.

I couldn't say it better myself!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! this is why I'm and many who have been there for a while are leaving. It's a shame that a hospital with such a reputation would give their nurse the needed pay that they deserve. Oh by the way the starting sal is $9.10/hr so pls consider living expense when considering going there.

Thanks for this valuable info...I will be moving to NC in a year, after 10 yrs at a Ga. Hospital. Want to be close to my daughter who lives in Raleigh. I also wanted Duke for the amount of research, etc. But I may rethink my choice. Possible will do some travelling nursing in the area first. Anyone know which hospitals hire travellers and which agencys work in the area? Will be new to travelling, but think this will be a good way to check out the hospitals and find a place to live. Am also considering areas nearer the coast, like New Bern.

Duke has the resources. Don't get me wrong. It's everything else that's questionable. 1st off, they are the LOWEST paying hospital in the area. Even Durham Regional, which is part of Duke, is paying better. They say that should be ok because you get to put their name on your resume. Who cares about putting their name on a resume? In nursing, what matters is experience and how much of it you've had. They treat their nurses worse than the housekeepers (trust me.. the housekeepers are unionized and you can't ask/tell them anything).

I am still amazed that they got the Magnet status. Needless to say, I no longer put much stock by this Magnet hype. I was there when they came and they asked a group of nurses one or 2 blow-off questions and left. No real dig into nurse satisfaction. Duke totes this Clinical Ladder thing in all of its' recruitment ads but that too is a sham compared to how other facilities run their clinical ladder programs.

It's all politics. I don't know about the other floors but half the nurses on my floor hate it there. Why they're still there I don't know. They are cliquish and just overall ridiculous... unfair assignments, charge nurse keeps her friends w/ either 1 pt or no pt all night while the rest of the floor has full loads and run around all night. New nurses get crapped on, orientation sucks, etc... management is well aware but keeps saying they "are working on it". Just totally not what I expected from a place with such a reputation. I've been really dissappointed. I'm on my way out the door.

UNC, on the other hand, gets rave reviews from staff and patients (I ask anyone and everyone who'll entertain my questions...:-). And they pay about $3-4 more per hr!!!

I agree with Cay and 99nurse....Duke is ALL politics and how much butt you can kiss. I'm getting OUT!!

If we wanted to kiss butt all day, we'd do something else. Why isn't it all about the patients? Why isn't it all about WORKING TOGETHER???

HUGS to my Dukeys!~Kimmie:spam:

Forgive me if I am wrong but I graduate in May and Duke just offered me a position. I want to say the pay was around 19.58. Additional $4.00 for evenings and weekends, and weekend nights $4.50 for shift differentials)

Congrats! I have an interview in March with Duke's Durham Regional Gems Program. Did you accept and what area will you be in?
