Anyone here work PRN? I know that different facilities call their PRN staff by different names...float pool, supplemental nursing staff, per diem. I just started working PRN at a small rural hospital. There are no minimum requirments as far as number of shifts, day vs night shift, weekends or holidays.They let me know the deficits and I let them know if i can fill any of them. I know other hospitals do have minimum requirements regarding scheduling. How does it work where you are? Also, do you get pay in leiu of benefits...I don't where i'm at but I know a majority of hospitals in my area offer that to prn staff. Thanks for any input!:)

I work PRN, and like you I get a schedule of available days each month and pick those days that I want. No min requirements. I usually end up working 2 12's a week. I get 25% more than my base pay in lieu of benefits. It works our wonderful for me and my busy home life.

I work PRN for my unit only, not float pool. Min requirements are 24 hrs per time schedule (month basically),pay is the same for me, whereas the float pool earn $3/hr more. No benies, need to have a coded/min 24hr/wk position to be benefit elligable.

I once worked in LTC prn, and got a whopping $1/hr more. BUT, when I started prn at a local rural hospital I received 50% more per hour in lieu of benefits. There was no minimum required, just willingness to fill in when needed. I'm full-time now and really miss the extra $$, but you have to be full-time in order for them to pay for continuing education...not to mention guaranteed hours - ya never know what the census is going to do. Thanks y'all for the replies! With my family situation PRN works great! The only down side of course is no benefits. Does anyone work PRN in more than of facility? I know quiet a few nurses that do this.

Have worked prn for last 13 yrs. I tell them when I can work. They tell me if they need me. No benefits however I can take time off when my husband is off. He gets 6 weeks a year and never work when he is off. Have to work 2 shifts a month and one holiday a year. One shift has to be a weekend shift but 3-11 Friday qualifies so haven't really worked a weekend for a long time now. Have always been able to do the 2 shifts even when my mother was terminal and son had mi. Works great for me.

I have been working PRN since I retired 3 years ago. I do 8 hr shift ,generally 3 or 4 in the 2 week schedule. And lots of times I will work 4 hrs or 6 hrs to help someone out that needs to split a shift if I can .
I work on my floor only. No benefits or extra pay. No requirements of how many hours, or weekends or holiday. But I do work a couple holidays . Have to work 12 hrs in 90 days. So far haven't gone that long without working.
After everyone has filled out the self schedule ,I see what is needed and pick the ones that I want to work. Of course, I get lots of calls, thank goodness for Caller ID!
The float pool has allot of requirements,I think one "major" holiday and a "minor" one.
Float pool nurses have to work on several units depending on what "track" they have signed up for. MEd,surg,tele,ect or ER and ICU's track. They do make more money ,no benefits, and choose what days they are able to work.
The prn has been great for me to be able to keep on working while I still am able (but don't want to keep up a strict schedule) Plus since my husband is retired ,it gives me somewhere to go every now and then!!!!!
