Let's have some fun learning. Each person should throw out 5 random facts or "things to remember" before taking your finals, HESI, NCLEX, etc.
Updated:
OK I know this sounds stupid but I have a friend that gets really freaked out before big tests like finals, HESI, NCLEX, and usually we get together and a few days before I start throwing out random facts at her. On 2 different tests she said the only way she got several questions was from the random facts that I threw at her that she never would have thought of!
SOOOOO..... I thought that if yall wanted to do this we could get a thread going and try to throw out 5 random facts or "things to remember". NCLEX is coming and the more I try to review content the more I realize that I have forgotten so......here are my 5 random facts for ya:
OH and BTW these came from rationales in Kaplan or Saunders no made up stuff:
1️⃣ A kid with Hepatitis A can return to school 1 week within the onset of jaundice.
2️⃣ After a patient has dialysis they may have a slight fever...this is normal due to the fact that the dialysis solution is warmed by the machine.
3️⃣ Hyperkalemia presents on an EKG as tall peaked T-waves
4️⃣ The antidote for Mag Sulfate toxicity is ---Calcium Gluconate
5️⃣ Impetigo is a CONTAGEOUS skin disorder and the person needs to wash ALL linens and dishes seperate from the family. They also need to wash their hands frequently and avoid contact.
Oh, ohh, one more...
? Vasopressin is also known as antidiuretic hormone
OK your turn....
Is there a chance one of the moderators could look into the possibility of making this a sticky thread? This has been the most helpful way to study for NCLEX as a supplement to my Lippincott Reveiw Book.
Regarding gastrostomy tube site care: do not place any dressing under disk unless it is ordered. Report to doctor any redness, foul odor, fever, or cloudy drainage.
Giving meds by feeding tube: if drug is available in both tablet and liquid form, give the liquid form.
Here are a few more quick facts:
Dilantin. Because the theraputic levels are so small, maintaining good blood levels can be a problem when given through a tube. Discontinue feedings 1-2 hours before and after giving dilantin to enhance absorption.
Theophylline. This drug may be poorly absorbed with continuous tube feedings. Monitor levels closely.
Warfarin. Tube-feeding solutions contain vitamin K & coumadin & vitamin K anatagonize each other. Monitor prothrombin times closely and adjust as indicated.
:bowingpur Thanks to all who have contributed to this thread. Your tips have been very helpful.:)
In celiac disease, all food sources of wheat must be eliminated. Need a gluten free diet.
Phenylketonuria is a genetic disease needing diet control of the essential amino acids.

celiacs must also avoid rye and barley....and American grown oats.....lactose intolerance is NOT an allergy
More Quick Facts:When instructing a pt on how to hold a cane, it should be at the level of the greater trochanter and femur, on the good side
When administering an enema, position the pt in a left Sims position. Do not elevate the head of bed
Tinnitus, most common symptom pts experience with inner ear disorders
Administering ear drops in a child, pull down and back on ear lobe
In adult, pull up and back on auricle. Instruct pt to keep head up for 10-15 min after administering drops
An isolated warmer area in the middle of a cast could be indicative of infection
PVC's are concerning of there are greater than 6 per min, if they occur in pairs, are multifocal, or if the fall on the T wave
Niacin, used to treat hyperlipidemia
Antiparkinson drugs, monitor for urinary retention, hypotension
Synthroid (for hypothyroidism), should only be given in the morning because of it's risk of causing insomnia if given at bedtime
Hyperthyroidism (Grave's Disease)---things speed up, monitor for tachycardia, nervousness, insomnia, weight loss, bulging eyes, diarrea, sensitive to heat
Hypothyroidism (Myexedma)--things slow down, weight gain, constipation, decreased activity level, bradycardia
had never heard of insomnia related to synthroid....googled, it is a quesionable relationship.....my understanding of why it is taken in the (early) AM is that it is a LARGE molecule, and needs to be on an empty somache....or it will pass thru the digestive tract
Insomnia is a side effect of thyroid hormones. Saunders confirms it. Makes sense though! Increased met. rate, your body is "too busy to sleep" as opposed to the folks with hypothyroidism who may report somnolence (dec. met rate, body is slow and sleepy). Ok some more facts.
