Let's have some fun learning. Each person should throw out 5 random facts or "things to remember" before taking your finals, HESI, NCLEX, etc.
Updated:
OK I know this sounds stupid but I have a friend that gets really freaked out before big tests like finals, HESI, NCLEX, and usually we get together and a few days before I start throwing out random facts at her. On 2 different tests she said the only way she got several questions was from the random facts that I threw at her that she never would have thought of!
SOOOOO..... I thought that if yall wanted to do this we could get a thread going and try to throw out 5 random facts or "things to remember". NCLEX is coming and the more I try to review content the more I realize that I have forgotten so......here are my 5 random facts for ya:
OH and BTW these came from rationales in Kaplan or Saunders no made up stuff:
1️⃣ A kid with Hepatitis A can return to school 1 week within the onset of jaundice.
2️⃣ After a patient has dialysis they may have a slight fever...this is normal due to the fact that the dialysis solution is warmed by the machine.
3️⃣ Hyperkalemia presents on an EKG as tall peaked T-waves
4️⃣ The antidote for Mag Sulfate toxicity is ---Calcium Gluconate
5️⃣ Impetigo is a CONTAGEOUS skin disorder and the person needs to wash ALL linens and dishes seperate from the family. They also need to wash their hands frequently and avoid contact.
Oh, ohh, one more...
? Vasopressin is also known as antidiuretic hormone
OK your turn....

Well, to be honest with you, that is the way it works in California, but I do not know why, dear. Yes, I am in Los Angeles County. feliz3
Good afternoon to you all from sunny California,I just want first at all to thank you for all the wonderful postings. Next I want to announce that I passed the NCLEX. I took it on July 1, 2009, and my license was posted at the California Board of Nurses on July 3, 2009. I thank to God for the support in this particular endeavor, my friends.
I want to recommend you all who are preparing to take the NCLEX, the following books: Prioritization, Delegation & Assignment by Linda A. LaCharity, Candice K. Kumagai and Barbara Bartz, and Strategies for Alternate Item Formats on the NCLEX-RN Exam by Linda Anne Silvestri and Yazmin Mojica. The book on prioritization question is must...I was hit with what I perceived at the time I taking the NCLEX as "a thoudsand questions" on prioritization. I cannot stress enough the importance of the prioritization book. I was so glad I took time to study that book for it paid off: I am a rgistered nurse in the state of California. The book on alternative format is good, too, for I was hit with a lot of questions on alternive format which happened to be an area I felt I was weak, so I made an effort to study it, as well.
A critical aspect of my preparation to pass the NCLEX was to take the Hurst's Review. I absolutely recommend the Husts Review for it uses a different approach to teaching. Go to hurstreview.com and watch Marlene Hurst teaching a lecture on electrolytes. Marlene Hurst is wonderful for she uses the WHY APPROACH to teaching, so once the student understands why things are happening concerning the pathophysiology of a disease, the student does not feel she/he needs to rely so much on memory. Certain values definitely will need to be committed to memory, but it will be a manageable amount.
I learned with Marlene Hurst the meaning of prioritization. The NCLEX exam wants to separate the "safe" future nurses from the "killers". Prioritization questions are testing if the candidate has sufficient knowledge to determine a course of action that would kill a patient, and thereby by reconizing such course of action the student will choose the answer that will keep the patient alive. That is all what the NCLEX is about. Marlene Hurst explains that so well, and I gave so many thanks to God even while taking the NCLEX that I understood that concept! I attribute my success primary to God and then to Marlene Husts review...word to the wise think about what I told you about the meaning of prioritization questions. Best to all of you. feliz3
Congratulations RN !!
You worked so hard. It paid off. I am so happy for you and wish you the best.

Can you tell me where did you buy those books? If you don't mind, can you tell me where I can buy the used book if somebody have one and willing to sell it to me. Thanks and congratulations again feliz3.

Good afternoon littleangels0511,
Thanks for you well wishes, my friend. I purchase my textbooks online via amazon.com. Amazon sells used book; however, it charges an extra shipping fee for used books and most of the time I end up paying for the book as much as if it would be new, so I buy it new. Another thing, used books which come with a CD-ROM when new, usually the CD-ROM is missing with used books. My friend, with the book Strategies for Alternate Item Formats on the NCLEX-RN, it is critical that you obtain the book with the CD-ROM for you are going to practice using the CD_ROM on the same format questions are presented to you in the NCLEX. I was so surprised while taking the NCLEX for I got approximately 7-10 questions on alternate format...whenever you take it, you may not have any. On the other hand, you have to be prepared to answer as many questions in alternate format as the version of the NCLEX you get presents to you...it is a fact of life!
This particular book is not very expensive, it is approximately $26.00. I had to get it because I was not very good answering questions in alternative format in the past, so knowing myself, I decided to practice on the areas of the tests which were a problem for me. If you are willing to purchase this book used, make sure it comes with its CD-ROM in good working conditions, not scratched or damaged so after you paid for it you would not be able to use it...that is the down side of buying used book. This particular one you have to have its CD-ROM. Another problem with used books is that usually the sellers do not have a return policy if the book is not in the condition the buyer expects, the buyer is stuck with the book. Best, feliz3

Thank you feliz3. I was thinking if I can buy your books but I don't know how to reach you since we are not able to put our personal infomation (ie. phone #) in this thread. But if you have any idea, don't hesitate to tell me, and thanks again for answering my questions. Best wishes for you.
Calcium Channel Blockers are
Very- Verapamil
Nice- Nifedipine
Drugs- Ditalizem aka Cardizem
Im not sure if they ask EKG ?'s on NCLEX but here are a few tips on remembering some heart blocks
1st degree heart block looks like NSR but the PR interval is 0.20 or greater
2nd Degree Heart block aka Mobitz 1 alsp aka Wenkeback the PR interval keeps getting longer and longer
then suddenly drops a PR interval- remember Wenkebach=Warning (the warning, the PR interval is getting longer and longer)
2nd degree Heart block Type 2- no PR interval getting longer and longer it just suddenly drops (suddenly=serious)
Im sure that you know this but I'll repeat it any way. Nursing is a science and science is always changing so any question that says Always,Never, (definitive answers) are almost always wrong , remember its a science and always changing and each person can manifest differently.
Also, if you ever have to guess at an answer always pick the one that has the longest answer
For Acute MI's remember MONA, not administered in that order : MONA Morphine, O2, Nitroglycerine, Aspirin
administration is least invasive to most so that would be : O2, Aspirin, Nitro x3 q5 min, Morphine
Hope this helps some Ill post some more later
