Let's have some fun learning. Each person should throw out 5 random facts or "things to remember" before taking your finals, HESI, NCLEX, etc.
Updated:
OK I know this sounds stupid but I have a friend that gets really freaked out before big tests like finals, HESI, NCLEX, and usually we get together and a few days before I start throwing out random facts at her. On 2 different tests she said the only way she got several questions was from the random facts that I threw at her that she never would have thought of!
SOOOOO..... I thought that if yall wanted to do this we could get a thread going and try to throw out 5 random facts or "things to remember". NCLEX is coming and the more I try to review content the more I realize that I have forgotten so......here are my 5 random facts for ya:
OH and BTW these came from rationales in Kaplan or Saunders no made up stuff:
1️⃣ A kid with Hepatitis A can return to school 1 week within the onset of jaundice.
2️⃣ After a patient has dialysis they may have a slight fever...this is normal due to the fact that the dialysis solution is warmed by the machine.
3️⃣ Hyperkalemia presents on an EKG as tall peaked T-waves
4️⃣ The antidote for Mag Sulfate toxicity is ---Calcium Gluconate
5️⃣ Impetigo is a CONTAGEOUS skin disorder and the person needs to wash ALL linens and dishes seperate from the family. They also need to wash their hands frequently and avoid contact.
Oh, ohh, one more...
? Vasopressin is also known as antidiuretic hormone
OK your turn....
hi--I believe this has to do with the spinal column and different injuries sustained on each spinal cord level--I will look up the exact info and send another post.jadu1106
Just to make things simple, I think that any spinal cord injury I believe from C2-5 (spinal cord injury cervical...) would affect the diaphragm muscle and the breathing. Those injuries are fatal most of times unless you are put on mechanical ventilator...
Any injury in the sacral area (S...)would affect the perineum and pelvic area and the lower extremities) I remember the pudendal block from the ATI predictor, which is some kind of anesthesia given during childbirth to numb the pelvic area!
That content deals with neurovascular nursing...
Any NICU RN for help?
some respiratory
1. rsv- child in private room...contact precautions..not droplet or airbone. (sometimes i get this mixed up because its called respiratory synctical virus..i used to pick droplet precautions but i have down now lol!
2. elderly adults generally present with confusion rather than s/s of an illness.
3. pneumonia- droplet precautions
4. copd pts should get low flow oxygen b/c of the hypoxic drive. (1-3l/min) teach pursed lip breathing.
5. ards- this pt doesnt respond to even 100% fio2
6. tb- hemotysis (advanced stage) v/s pulmonary edema- frothy blood tinged sputum
7. allen's test- done b/f an abg by applying pressure to the radial artery to determine if adequate blood flow is present.
8. inh (isoniazid)- tx of tb. give vit b6 to prevent peripheral neuritis
9. simv mode on vents commonly used for weaning pt off ventilator.
10. vent alarms: high alarm (increased secretions then suction......, biting tube-need an oral airway,...... or coughing and anxiety- need a sedative)
low alarm- there is a leak or break in system...check all connectors and cuff.
11. if a trach becomes accidently dislodged try to replace it with an obturator..if no luck keep the hole open with hemostats until physician arrives.
a child with kawasaki disease might be given a high dose of aspirin to reduce the risk of heart problems.
i remember i got a question pertaining to this on one of my cds and i didnt choose aspirin because i was thinking you dont give high dose aspirin to kids because of reye's but when i looked it up in my peds book...there it was sure enough aspirin for kawasaki. thanks for posting this....its a great reminder.
Just an NCLEX observation....
I don't know about anyone elses test but let me give you a little insight on mine. NOTHING on my test was extremely specific. What I mean is there was no question about what specific level the fractured spine was at. They know that you already made it through school so I think they are mainly trying to test your nursing skills/ critical thinking. Most of it was general nursing stuff like ...what would you tell the patient if..... what statement by the patient would you question....... And I had a TONS of patient teaching questions....TONS!!!! What is the most important thing to teach your patient when........ (meds, procedures, post op)
All of the stuff was really general. I would brush up on all things CARDIAC, & cancer and chemo stuff (I say that because my school taught us NOTHING at all about Cancer or it's treatments). Sauders 4th ed is a really great review book!
Earliest sign of fluid retention is weight gain

I never learned this either! I have no idea what any of that means!
