It depends on the program. I had to take "Intro to Health Care" as a prereq and that covered medical terminology. My cousin is in nursing school now and she is required to take a medical terminology course. That being said, you can really pick up what you need just over the course of things.

Meds are occasionally borrowed on my unit. For instance, if one patient needs Norvir and pharm has not sent it up yet, it can be taken from another patient's bin and replaced later. Everything is barcoded so as long as meds are being scanned as they should, no chance of giving the wrong med or dose. I would NEVER borrow narcotics or anything controlled, though (although those all come from pyxis anyway).

I'm sure it's much the same now. Every guy I've asked about it has said that looking at another dude's 'junk' is grounds for a butt kicking!

Are you asking how long it takes to work in L&D after you become an RN? I just passed the NCLEX last month and am able to apply to jobs in L&D. Some take new grads and some do not. I am in South Florida.

Passed NCLEX at 75 questions. My Kaplan scores were in the high 60s to low 70s.

Actually when they are older, better pain management is available to them. An adult could be put under general and then on a post-op morphine pump. Can't do that with a baby. I am really against circumcision but I've come to realize you can't argue with people who have made up their mind to do it. The only thing to do is put the information out there and let people draw their own conclusions. Misinformation really burns me up though.

I am graduating with my ADN in May. Last month I spoke with a nurse recruiter that came to our campus. I asked her if her hospital took new grads directly into Labor and Delivery. She said they do, and they have a preceptorship program in place for it, but it is a much more intensive interview process. She told me to apply a month before graduation, and I plan to. I plan to get recommendations from some clinical instructors (especially my OB instructor) and to bring in my clinical evaluations for all 4 semesters (they have all been positive). I was thinking of bringing some of my OB paperwork as well (PP assessment, NB assessment, careplans, etc.) I am doing my preceptorship in L&D and plan to ask my preceptor for a recommendation as well, but I will just be starting that next week so I may not be far enough in by the time I interview. Is there anything else I can do to prepare? What can I expect in this "intensive interview process"? Thank you all in advance! Noelle

I don't have a book open in front of me or anything, but off the top of my head you might want to consider something related to breathing like Impaired Gas Exchange. What you have so far sounds good to me. Make sure that your interventions are what the nurse will do and your goals are what the patient will do.

I bought mine at the same store I bought my uniforms at. I wouldn't think it would matter what type it is; the store as I was only had one kind and it works well for me to practice with.

The hardest part for me is just trying to find time to do all the things I need to get done outside of school. Cleaning, socializing, etc. I could be a lot more organized and a lot less lazy though.
